And in that regard, and as exciting as the 2015 and 2023 GFs were, and how close we were to adding two more years to that list, I don’t need to see either of them again.

NRL is flying high in 2024 but if this isn’t the best season ever, then which one is?

On account of time or not being in India? The game was on 9 (as well as Fox Cricket) so certainly it was not due to lack of availability on TV.

Maybe ask the Toronto Wolfpack and their fans if they would have liked the same treatment from SuperLeague as Warriors got from the NRL during covid. Warriors should be thankful of the support they already got to still be in the comp. Lots of Aussies bought memberships when they were over here, lots of people went to their home games at Gosford and then Redcliffe.
I’m happy the Warriors survived covid, but their supporters can’t keep playing this “we deserve more thanks” card, Warriors club management doesn’t.

Treating the Warriors as second-class citizens is dumb business by NRL and Australian-centric media

Poor Ricky, never his fault, so tedious… for once I wish he’d just own that his team has shocking discipline…

Absolutely, DCE tries his guts out every week, always there with the effort plays. Last night he was invariably there to make a crucial tackle, yes he let in the Billy Walters one but he saved/stopped a couple others. He was one of the few to stay in the chase for the Cobbo intercept try, even Tom gave that one up. His kicking game was good, and he certainly wasn’t lacking effort with ball in hand. If I were a Manly supporter I’d definitely share your concern if he went down with injury. As a Queensland supporter I’m certainly happy he is fit and should take his place at 7 for Origin in a few weeks.
As a Broncos supporter though, he was probably the difference in the score line last night not being even worse for Manly.

Your second idea has been done in the near past with the “Legends of League”, with a weekend of shortened games with legends of clubs making up teams. And was good fun to watch, plus they had great fan interaction with player autograph sessions throughout the day. I’m not sure this has run since covid, but had often been post season (Late October).

Not sure I’m keen on League/Union games, the games are diverging probably faster now than ever.

As for all star, if you put GF two weeks after Prelim Finals, you could have all star in the weekend in between, with all clubs bar those in GF participating in some fashion. Also gives GF clubs the chance to be fresh of niggling injuries for GF.

Three ideas from other sports the NRL should copy

I nearly choked on my corn flakes yesterday morning when Wiedler rolled out the McKinnon/Smith story again in the SMH. As for the James Hooper’s 25 reasons why Sydney hates the Storm, that was a complete farce of an article. I’d be happy to not ever see another article by either again!

The Storm's NRL stranglehold grows stronger, but Panthers are 2021 favourites

As someone who was at the game last night, and as someone who has been to a lot of games with smaller crowds at ANZ I tend to agree. It didn’t look close to 50% full, I’d have guessed crowd as closer to 30,000.

Lots of people deserve praise for getting the season through, the NRL for planning and negotiating with the respective governments. The players, coaching staff and other club stuff for following the covid guidelines with only a handful of players in exceptions. The fans getting behind the game by watching on TV, buying into the “Fan in the stand” concept till crowds could return. Then when crowds could return generally filling the reduced capacity for most games and abiding by the covid guidelines such that no NRL venue to my knowledge has ended up on a covid warning list due to positive cases. Everyone was truly in it together and the NRL definitely showed the way for the other codes with its can do attitude. Every challenge along the way was met, other than perhaps Annastacia Palaszczuk’s continuing ridiculous Qld border closure/restrictions for political purposes.

Have the NRL’s critics finished wiping egg off their faces?

And flights between Sydney and Brisbane were nowhere near as frequent as they are today (well pre-COVID), so managing the travel was probably tougher then, than it is in modern times (pre-COVID).

History of Brisbane Rugby League: Going out with a bang (The 80s part one – 1980 to 1986)

Other item I’d like to comment on was the absolute frenzy on getting Wally’s signature when he left Valleys. I remember how much he got booed at Corbett Park in the first Brothers vs Wynnum-Manly game after he moved to Manly, because he didn’t sign with Brothers. That’s something many NSW supporters won’t understand, Wally was used to getting booed by crowds long before he got booed in Sydney. He was that good, when playing away the spectators would boo him to try and put him off his game. Never worked.

Another great article on the Brisbane comp Matt, I fear though, as a Brothers supporter, I’m looking forward to your 1987 recap more than you. I’ll never forget being at Lang Park for the 87 GF (in the lower tier of the old Hale St Stand) and the absolute hammering Redcliffe gave Brothers on their own line from the kickoff, fortunately things improved from their for my team! Sorry.

Matth, this has been a great series thus far, some items of pure “Rugby League” in there to have a bit of a chuckle over, loved this one:

So some things never change, but despite being in the midst of World War 1, I didn’t find any references to the Bunker!

Looking forward to future chapters, having grown up in Brisbane and going to a tonne of games in the 80s pre-Broncos, this does bring back some great memories.

That is an interesting point, and tends to be backed up by the location of the teams in Sydney vs teams in Melbourne. Of the Melbourne teams, Essendon is furthest from the CBD at barely 10kms, compared to Sydney having really just the Roosters and Souths inside this radius, and traditionally Wests Tigers (Balmain) as well at Leichardt Oval. Penrith (~57km) and Wests Tigers at Campbelltown (~57km) aren’t much closer to then Sydney CBD than Geelong (~75km) is to Melbourne CBD.
When all the Melbourne based AFL games moved from their traditional venues to being played out of just MCG and Marvel, the fans were already used to having to travel to inner city locations from the suburbs as Melbourne grew and going to these larger venues with public transport at the door actually made it easier to go to games, as game was still generally close to the CBD but now with better transport connections. Whereas in Sydney the teams have traditionally played much closer to home, at smaller venues, getting people to go the larger venues requires considerable more effort than they have been used to making, and most of these venues aren’t as convenient with public transport as MCG/Marvel are in Melbourne.
Most people in Sydney travel enough during the week, so probably don’t want to travel as much on the weekend to the footy, so it makes it hard to get those who live close to traditional venues to travel to larger venues further away. ANZ Stadium in Sydney is very close to the geographic centre of Sydney, but is surprisingly difficult to get to via public transport, with 1 or 2 bus services, and a train that is a shuttle service to the mainline 5km away. I live only a 15-20min drive from ANZ Stadium (off peak) but on public transport it is 1 bus and 3 or 4 trains (depending on bus chosen), BankWest Stadium is a similar distance drive but is only a single bus trip.

Why the NRL can't compete with the AFL in Sydney

I think you’ll find attendance was just as poor in 80s and 90s but as only 1-2 games were shown on TV each week and these were generally the best games (and hence best attended) it seemed that crowds were bigger.

Why the NRL can't compete with the AFL in Sydney

Not a Roosters supporter either my bad, was thinking of the vanquished teams from last two years rather than correct GF teams. Good pickup!

Four takeaways from Channel Nine’s biff with the NRL

I’m one of those Fox/Kayo subscribers that avoids NRL on 9. I bought a ticket to the GF last year 2 days before the game, in a higher cost category, when I remembered I’d have to put up with 9 if I wanted to watch it live. Not being a Melbourne or Canberra supporter I think this shows the level of respect I have for 9’s coverage.

Four takeaways from Channel Nine’s biff with the NRL

I think you’ll find the ABC showed the Saturday afternoon game live and full game not an hour highlights package prior to the SL war. 9 showed Friday night on a 1 hour delay at 8:30pm (thank you Burke’s Backyard) and a highlights package between 6:30 and 7:30 of the Sunday afternoon game that sparked Andrew Denton’s “Free the 33” campaign to see all of the game, not just the 47 which was closer to 43mins of action they did show. So arguably you could say the ABC was doing a better job than 9 for Rugby League coverage in mid-90s.

You missed the Sharks in your SuperLeague count. You know one of the grand finalists in 1997. 🙂
