Is this team debacle getting simpler now….obviously assuming players have healed. Green & Starc come straight in….Warner exits permanently before more damage is done to body, soul and average ….and Renshaw goes as well …for now anyway. Kuhnemann out for Agar maybe to potentially strengthen the batting with Green and Starc.

FLEM’S VERDICT: Shellshocked … panicked - Aussie collapse like watching a car crash in slow motion

Yeah….suppose having 4 quicks with Green in is not needed. How do you strengthen the batting though while maintaining team balance…who is left, Agar maybe?. Then you have the extra spin option.

Cummins to leave India tour for personal reasons but set to return for third Test, injured Hazlewood's series over

Fairly simple now….Green & Starc come in, Warner gets a permanent test exodus and Renshaw gets a temporary one. Travis moves to opener and with Green & Starc giving the lower middle order some batting depth, the team already looks better. Oh, and drop Kuhnemann and bring in Boland or Hazlewood if fit.

Cummins to leave India tour for personal reasons but set to return for third Test, injured Hazlewood's series over

Another concerning statistic is Australia are 0 for 2 and they have won both coin tosses. Both occasions you would suggest was a distinct advantage to bat first, and never took advantage of either. Cummins does seem to have a knack of calling it, but how long before that luck runs out as well.

FLEM’S VERDICT: Shellshocked … panicked - Aussie collapse like watching a car crash in slow motion

On the positive side, Cummins did win the toss!!. The rest of the equation needs a little work though. These Friday test starts actually work out well…get a weekend of cricket in and watch the end come Sunday.

'I'm as much to blame as anyone': Cummins admits Aussies batted 'too up-tempo' in Delhi implosion

Echo your comments here Kalva, but the big difference is the runs India can put on with their tail. Even with a top order collapse, they have so much depth in their batting, they can easily revive their innings. This could be a nail biter of a test…

Second Test day 1 lessons: Are things really as bad as they seem?

Agree….and usually first sessions can largely inform outcomes, but not so sure about this Indian side. They could easily have a top order collapse and still erase the deficit with the incredible depth of batting they have. Think this one could go down to the wire.

Khawaja, Handscomb shine but Warner may be subbed out as India in control despite Aussies putting up fight

Sorry, but am not buying it….Warner got another unplayable or gem of a delivery to dismiss him. He is simply not good enough anymore in this arena of test cricket. Witnessed a repeat performance of Nagpur with deer in the headlights again. Anyway, back to the positive, for me Handscomb really impressed and looked assured in defence and attack. Glad Ussie got some runs, albeit he had plenty of luck go his way with a few miscues over his stumps. Test is nicely setup and think we are in for a thriller…

Khawaja, Handscomb shine but Warner may be subbed out as India in control despite Aussies putting up fight

Hey Ben….wild guess here, but assume you were just slightly annoyed with Travis’ omission in Nagpur?. Easy one of the worst decisions made since Alan Donald decided not to run in 1999 WC Semi…lol. Looking forward to Head making a tonne in Delhi.

FLEM’S VERDICT: The key trio who must bounce back for Australia to grab series momentum from India

Agree Flem….if you adopt the same game plan as Nagpur and expect a different outcome, come Sunday, we will be watching the final nails been driven in again.

FLEM’S VERDICT: The key trio who must bounce back for Australia to grab series momentum from India

The shortened pre-match interview I saw on 7 News last night with Cummins was like listening to a hardened politician. I like Cummins, but he said nothing….and maybe that was his script, because of all the uncertainty. Didn’t fill me with a whole lot of confidence, but think the best approach is….whoever gets selected today needs to pitch up and show some real fight. The Delhi crowd will be easily 4 x that of Nagpur and 10 x more intimidating….you will be eaten for breakfast before you know it, if you show any weakness. Good luck to Aus.

Cummins facing first true test of his leadership as Aussies ponder line-up changes for second Test

This whole thing is now an even bigger gigantic mess going back to the intial squad selection. Phew, reading all these comments on this forum and some others on team selection…you can break it down into a few common denominators….Smith, Lab, Head, Carey, Cummins and Murphy….even Lyon is not a common thread, but will put him in to make it easier and it makes sense. So, to make it fair then, given all the uncertainty, permutations, and obviously the immense stress and responsibility put on the selectors here..????. Put all the remaining “healthy” names in a hat and get Rohit to do the lucky draw for 4 at the coin toss….how exciting would that be!!

Green on track, Starc doubtful means Kuhnemann close to joining list of Aussie spin bolters who sink or swim

Had a horrible dream….Warner walking out to bat again in Delhi. It fortunately didn’t last long to do any damage….realised all I did was nod off and when I awoke it was all over….Ashwin had been given the ball. All this talk about dropping Warner…these selectors have zero backbone in making the tough calls, but pretty good at making ridiculous decisions.

FLEM'S VERDICT: Head must come back but Aussies need to change game plan or they’ll get another thrashing

Unfortunately a very weak SA side and having a bad day at the office at the MCG kept has done irreparable damage to Australia because it unfortunately gave Davey another life….terrible situation, but it does appear there is more to his selection ….captured in a previous post….and love it….the dreaded ” book of David”.

'Poor all round', 'There's got to be changes' - Mr 16.95 Warner needs to be put out of misery after Aussies caned: Talking Points

Yip, couldn’t agree more….however, according to Warner, he is actually doing the Aus team a HUGE favour by staying on as long as he can. I can distinctly remember the interview in December on Fox tv when he was asked about his retirement plans….” he and Ussie need to stay on as long as possible to ensure the team doesn’t experience the sudden and combined loss of 2 senior openers, which could be devastating for any side”. Yip…DW is doing this for the salvation of the team and we should all be grateful for his continued service.

Spin bolter a 'live chance' to play, Head set to replace Warner as Cummins defends controversial selections

Yeah an absolute demolition job India have done here. Never expected a session of destruction though. How quickly things can change….after the convincing triumphs of the summer against WI & SA and how quickly talk turned to where this Great Australian team now ranks with those of the past. What is being said now?. Cricket is and always will be the greatest leveller…remember a year ago SA won their home series against the same Indian team…coming back from 1 down to win 2-1. Largely expected for India to win that series. Hard to be humble, but suggest that Australia wait until India & Eng are done before claiming any greatness within the current team. This recent decimation should already provide some perspective.

Humiliated: Australia skittled in a session as Indian spinners set up innings victory

Selectors have really got a conundrum on their hands now and cannot wait to see the next team sheet. The Head experiment spectacularly backfired by bringing in Renshaw at #5…Handscomb did okay relatively speaking…Travis’ s confidence dented badly by the selectors….Warner did nothing to advance his further selection on the back of an already poor track record in India.
So what now?…Renshaw needs another chance, he has just been brought back into the side… Handscomb did OK and stays in because he is a righty, Warner stays in because otherwise the dreaded “book of David” is published…. then admittedly we need a spot for Head as well, because we really screwed that up….superstar allrounder Green is healthy again and a certain pick. Ussie also needs another chance, because he simply got a peach of delivery and has been in sublime form. Shake that all up and count to 11 and sounds like it’s pretty simple and now makes perfect sense….Labuschagne & Smith are out for the next test.

Renshaw (and Warner) over Head joins the pantheon of Aussie selection howlers

Looks like my pre-game prediction of Warner not lasting the first 5 overs was very generous indeed. And not happy that they dropped Travis…you need to back your form players and give them a chance to prove they can adapt to these wickets and put up some decent scores. Cannot blindly pigeon hole players forever….that’s not how the good players become great players. If this is a selection strategy, as flawed as it may be, then be consistent….drop Warner as well.

'Bowled an absolute buffet': Hayden slams 'rubbish' Cummins as Rohit, Jadeja take Aussies to the cleaners

Yip, I really am looking forward to the first 5 overs of the each Australian innings of each test…South Africa turned DW into a hero in the BDT, and in the process got him on the plane to India. Now lets see if he can return the favour….suspect not. Reckon a maximum of 30 balls is all Warner will get before he falls to one of the spinners.

Warner faces moment of truth in India as bigger tormentor than Broad sets sights on Aussie lefties

Hey Flem, another well constructed piece and think you have got it spot on in terms of where the contributions need to be for Australia to be successful. In short, suppose you are saying everyone is going to need to step up here, this time, unlike the WI & SA series….. there will be no cracks for players to hide in.
Looking forward to this clash…cannot wait.

FLEM’S VERDICT: The two key factors Australia have to nail to have any hope of upsetting India on their turf

Enjoyed this…Very well written piece. I wonder how much experimentation is going to happen in the upcoming shortened Rugby Championship. My guess is the coaches are going to be weary on having their key players out on the park too long….simply to limit exposure to any WC ending injuries. Probably wouldn’t read too much into the outcome of that competition….suggest it is a great opportunity to try out a few lingering combinations and get the usual bench warmers some extended game time. Done with cricket for now….bring on the rugga.

Who survives the coaching Hunger Games? Time running out for World Cup rush jobs to be successful

Yeah, in agreement here. If you want to push the boundaries and then lose your wicket in the process by being caught outside the chalk….take it on the chin. Interesting though, since you brought it up here….I was actually a fan of the ‘deception fielding’ tactic. It added another dimension to the game….why not give the fielders another tool in their box to assist in potential run-out opportunities. Batters and bowlers have been given a few things along the way with a few law changes….time for fielders to get one?

How to fix cricket’s bubbling Mankad issue (by doing absolutely nothing)

I can guarantee you, that the eventual democracy in SA and with it a return to international sport had very little to do with the world isolating SA from sport. Sport was very much alive and well in SA during those 22 odd years….we simply competed amongst ourselves and learnt to live with the isolation.
Having lived through the brewing mass discontent, uprising and ultimately violence…that comes from years of forced inequality and human rights suppression….sport was simply a victim of that. You think the CA is going to sway the Taliban on their policies…the might of the US couldn’t even affect lasting change.

Cricket News: 'They'll pick the white guy' - Khawaja claims racism still rife in Australian cricket, Rashid threatens BBL boycott

That is not my argument Tempo…agree, it is damn wrong to exclude females from any sport, but we are talking about the Taliban here….and would suggest there are other avenues here to try restore equality….because 50% exclusion surely beats 100%….because that is the alternative if more countries follow the CA stance.

Cricket News: 'They'll pick the white guy' - Khawaja claims racism still rife in Australian cricket, Rashid threatens BBL boycott

Yeah….agree Rowdy. Very convenient to use politics when it suits….in fact, no cricketing (or even other sporting codes) country is squeaky clean in any of the touchy areas….whether it be human rights, inclusivity, freedom of speech, religious beliefs…it is all very opionated and personal in the end. Let sport be the only positive constant in this mess we sometimes live in. Growing up as an avid sports fan in a country where we were isolated from the world for 22 years….difficult to understand when you are of primary school age. Certainly do not want to get into a debate around the justification on this sanction, but Sport should surely be bigger than these issues and punishing athletes is not the answer….find another avenue to deal with it.
