100% agree. The fault is not with NL, BD or the coaching group. It is the fault of the competition structure and development pathways in AU.
If we compare NL, BD and Fergus Burke (the young Canterbury player) you will see the underlying issue. They are all 22 or 23 years old and played SR and junior international.
NL has played 58 high level games (35 Super Rugby, 5 U20, 18 Wallabies), BD has played 32 (25 SR, 4 U20, 1 Australia A, 1 Wallabies) and FB has played 59 (18 SR, 35 NPC and 4 U20).
There is no way that any of them are ready for international rugby. FB may get to the ABs in a few years. By that time he will likely have +100 games, have been a pro for 6 years and have the necessary experience to perform.
The Aussie lads have been thrown to the wolves by comparison. They are learning on the job in the hardest environment. I feel sorry for them and think they have been set up to fail.
This isn’t even the coaches fault. They don’t have anyone else to pick. The issue is with RA and the development pathways they make available.

ANALYSIS: The Wallabies have backed the wrong horse as their No.10 project

Hi Mr B,
Any thoughts on how this game will play out? I’ll admit I haven’t followed a lot of northern rugby this year so I’m not sure what new trends the Irish will bring.
Based on the MAB game it still appears to be heavy pressure from the ruck to midfield on D and either a big runner in the 12 channel or a wrap behind on attack.
What the ABs will bring is a bit of a black box for now. If they try to develop go forward in the midfield Ireland will smash them all day. That leaves the forwards off the ruck/9 or out the back and around the rush. BB’s passing worries me so I hope we go through the forwards.
I guess this feeling of not knowing is what makes the first test special.

All Blacks selectors come up short on courage

“not instead of”
That is bang on. AU needs to fill out the season not isolate itself and shrink.
On the point of AU visibility in the finals. Pick 2 teams and stack them. People from other states will back an AU winner against NZ.
Totally agree on the promotion. It is practically nonexistent which is disappointing. Also try game times are terrible if you want to get the kids involved. None of the Reds games this year we’re available for my kids so we didn’t go to any.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

+4 weeks pre season. For the Super players not involved with the ABs it extends the professional year. For the club players stepping up it provides the pathway to SR

Everyone loves a good stir. Especially if you’re open about it

'NZ have treated us poorly': Why Phil Kearns is backing RA's hard ball, and how rugby 'wins over league every week'

How many teams have a realistic chance of winning the NRL, AFL, NBA…? In any year it would be probably only be 25-30% of the teams.

'NZ have treated us poorly': Why Phil Kearns is backing RA's hard ball, and how rugby 'wins over league every week'

It was mostly young in cheek. I’m sure the fall out and red tape would be spectacular if it was ever officially floated. Look what happened last time. Although the general feeling is that SR is crap because AU is not competitive. How would they have gone with 3 or 4 teams?

'NZ have treated us poorly': Why Phil Kearns is backing RA's hard ball, and how rugby 'wins over league every week'

** Troll Post**
So the comp splits. NZR gets the kids in the divorce and has a base of 7 teams. Sets up 3 teams in AU (Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra) pays for the players at a higher rate than the AU comp and gets the cream of the crop. Double round robin and finals at a high standard. They sell the tv rights and take the market share from AU.
Do/could AU fight this?

'NZ have treated us poorly': Why Phil Kearns is backing RA's hard ball, and how rugby 'wins over league every week'

After NZR went in to bat for MP and Drua I’m not sure inclusion in AU is assured.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

I wouldn’t have considered that scenario as an acceptable outcome.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

14 teams with a double round robin and finals would provide the length of season required. Would finals be effected by the absence of Wallaby players?
Although the fight in club land for the foundation spots would be epic. A lot of other people who missed out would happily burn it down out of spite

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

I have said elsewhere that SR is not a must have. A comp that addresses the development of the players is. Not seen too many coherent ideas to meet that need. Happy to listen if you care to elaborate….

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Good post. The length of season overseas does develop the AU players better than it is done domestically.
I’m not too hung up on SR but it’s hard to see a managed transition to the club comp you outlined without it. The trick will be getting the revenue to transition. Could be possible with the lions and WC.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Just Nuisance posted the figures from the Reds win. People do care when they are going well

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Please enlighten me as to how AU should give it’s players +35 weeks of development so that they are able to complete internationally? Happy to be educated.
Although after living in AU for 15 years I might have an inkling about the AU sporting landscape.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Everyone loves a winner. I’ve wondered why AU doesn’t stack a team or two and gun for the title every year. Winners drive popularity, viewers and revenue.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

What would the comp structure be and does it address the season length issue highlight in the article?

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Finding an appropriate place for the youngsters is important. You can’t throw them in the deep end and expect optimal development. How many wonder kids has AU burnt through that pathway? nZ has the U20 comp which seems to be a good solution. SRAU after July would be ok. May would say it’s devalued by the lack of international players tho

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Whatever gets the players to +35 weeks of professional development. The talk of SRAU being the ideal development pathway is a furphy. It doesn’t address the structural issue highlight in the article. If that gets fixed then AU will be in a better place. I’ve not seen any suggestions that fix that.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

On the broadcast deal.
$91m is for international, SR, 7’s AND NPC. To bring it into the discussion about SR we need to know the component of that which is drawn solely from SR. If we don’t isolate that then AU is just trying to leverage the popularity of the ABs.
Anyway the point of the article is that AU needs more rugby. If they players don’t get ~35 weeks they will be at a disadvantage to NZ and be locked into lower levels of performance

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

Yeah time at the crease is super important

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

A few years ago I think the coaching standards in AU were a bit lower than desired. NZR didn’t want to trust the AU system to develop their players and it was probably fair enough at the time. I think the standard has improved recently and there could be a case to open up the player market and selection policies.
One possible unintended consequence could be making NZ stronger. If the NZ SR player population increases by 10-15% but the AU players don’t get the additional 14 weeks per year from the NRC then the gap will increase.
AU has the players and population they just need the opportunity.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

SR has failed to lift the success and popularity of rugby in Australia. It’s had, how many years, almost 30
Winners are grinders. That applies at all levels. The structure of the season is wrong for lifting the standards in AU. Except for a brief period towards the end of the NRC the structure has been wrong for developing SR and international players.

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

That could work. It would provide the additional number of weeks needed in a high performance environment and open up another 35-40 spots for the second tier of player.
Might be embarrassing if they get regularly beaten by club the NPC sides tho!

Why Australia needs to stay in Super Rugby

One aspect I didn’t address was the pyramid of players that the second level of domestic comp provides. It is much better suited to progressing players up the ladder
How do you see the domestic competition being structured? Will it deliver the number of weeks needed to develop the whole rugby ecosystem?
