Thanks for the article 👍
I was thinking the Blues would perform better than they did. But they were outplayed right across the park. Probably the best of them was Stephen P but he was an isolated bright spot.
I don’t prescribe to the 1st 5 ‘arm chair ride’ school of thought. Yes the pack needs to perform but the backs need to enable the forwards to deliver the platform in the right areas. RM seems to do that better than BB.

How will the Super Rugby Pacific final impact All Blacks selection?

No problem with the comms between the two organisations. The issue is with the public statement, especially during the GF week.

The Wrap: Crusaders send a message to Rugby Australia to embrace excellence, not turn away from it

Prudent when done in private and with an FYI to your partner’s. Posturing when done in the media in Grand final week.

The Wrap: Crusaders send a message to Rugby Australia to embrace excellence, not turn away from it

In the first half into the wind I can understand maintaining territory but in the 2nd half with the ease of exit then the points were the definite option

REACTION: Crusaders forced into insane Super Rugby record for gutsy triumph, but suffer final blow with red card 'absurdity'

The crusaders were penalised for the winger being offside. It cut both ways.
I thought the maul collapse on the line warranted a penalty and YC . It appeared the ref gave multiple warnings to the Reds and didn’t send anyone off. Maybe he wanted to keep the finals ‘fair’?

'What do we do next?': How Mo'unga and the Crusaders sucked the life out of Reds

While we are talking about things missed….
The clean out on the crusaders front rower that split him on the eye looked to be direct to the head. No replay or review although play was stopped while he got patched up.
Good to discuss the standard of the officials but let’s keep both eyes open.

Meanwhile Morgan was on his 4th game. I don’t think he went very well and was overshadowed by G-B when he came on.

REACTION: 'Really disappointing'- Trans-Tasman gulf remains a chasm as Reds choke and Hurricanes rip in

Yeah I’m definitely playing the same game you normally do. You’ve done really well this year tho. Your tip the NSW confuses me a bit. I thought you might play it safe and pick the ‘home’ team.

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 10: Return of the (tipping) Jedi

I’m not sure it is unless the ball goes out. If the game moves from lineout to lineout then I think it’s in the ponies favour. If the Highlanders can maximise the ball in play time then the sudden step up in pace might be the best time to knock over the more established AU teams.

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 10: Return of the (tipping) Jedi

Well sitting 3 points down from the leaders it is time to start lodging some riskier tips.
Go the Highlands and Hurricanes!
Bet then again are they risky? Red’s have a couple of critical injuries and the Brumbies will kick the ball away a fair bit. That will suit the Highlanders and let them build into the game.

They are majestic. Like Rhino’s breaking out of the scrub and charging across the sevannah.

A timely reminder that there’s plenty of good stuff in our game, too

The non try scoring highlight for me was the Chiefs no. 1 hauling ass and making an open field tackle on B Barrett when he looked like he was getting smoked like countless other front row forwards.

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate your pain. I’m currently working through reconnecting databases on a remote site with poor comms. Good luck with getting the wrinkles ironed out!

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 8: All locked up again

Hi All,
Did anyone else not have their tips from last week counted on the ladder?

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 8: All locked up again

Rugby is expanding into the League heartland. Didn’t you know?

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 6: Make or break week

Nah. Embrace the need. At least that’s what I tell my wife!
Seriously tho, bring the stats. As a society we dumb stuff down too much. The view that “People will never understand if we talk about stats” only holds true if we never talk about them. The trick is to make it accessible.
My bet would be that if you divided the ruck speed up into two categories where the boundary is points scored – x number of rucks there would be 2 populations. One in general play where there is little seperating the teams and the other where the top teams ‘turn it on’ . Points scored would be a proxy for the speed and pressure applied at the rucks.

Coach's Corner: Is time up for Eddie Jones at England?

That is spot on. 80% of the rucks could be the same speed (slow) and the teams would be even. Then the top team gets quick ball from the remaining rucks. This will result in a marginal difference in average. Some of those fast rucks will be at a critical juncture of the game (i.e. first ruck after a line break) like the one in the article. That ~1 second ruck at that point in time was disproportionately important as it compounded the fractured defence.
In the comparison between NZ SR and Ireland we are looking at a spectrum of teams vs the best in 6N. Is there a wide spread across SR that brought the average down?

Coach's Corner: Is time up for Eddie Jones at England?

True that. And BB is not a great passer either. Irrespective of the game management and kicking aspects of the 10s play I prefer RM due to his passing ability

Coach’s Corner Issue 28: Can the Wallabies get even bigger?

One thing that put the ABs under unnecessary pressure was the distribution from 9 and 10. A fair number of those passes were behind, low or high. When the player is getting the ball from crap pass and the defence soon after then it’s really hard to get any go forward. The AI clean out over DH is a good example. A poor pass means he has no forward momentum post tackle and the clean out compromised from the outset.

Coach’s Corner Issue 28: Can the Wallabies get even bigger?

Thanks mate. The kids (including myself!) are already excited
It’ll be interesting to see what unfolds if the ruck is really quick for both teams. I could see the ABs leaking a fair few points but on the other hand they might back themselves to just score one more try than the opposition.

Coach’s Corner Issue 25: Is defence really the best means of attack?

Wouldn’t that be something to see. I’m going to this week’s games and taking the family to the early one at Suncorp. That’ll be the first test match for the kids. I just hope that it’s a good game and atmosphere 👍 I’ll stay on for the AB vs Bok game which will hopefully be a cracker

Coach’s Corner Issue 25: Is defence really the best means of attack?

It looks like the TJ intercept is a bit lower risk than I first thought. There is a defender tracking back on the offload option that TJ can see (Blackadder?). This leaves him free(ish) to take a punt on the pass. He could have played it safer by aiming to get over the ball at the next tackle and staying in the defence. But I guess it turned out ok.
I wonder if the ABs will bring the same ruck pressure against the Boks. If you know you are going to get the ball kicked at you in 3 phases do you need to overload the ruck? If the ruck is not flooded does the fringe defence problem get resolved.

Coach’s Corner Issue 25: Is defence really the best means of attack?

Ha ha I’d settle for 35 all as well. I’m not that picky????

Coach’s Corner Issue 24: When the whingeing stops, these Boks can really play!

With the committed fold on defence there is also plenty of space back over to the set piece. A switch back from a playmaker in the pocket from the first breakdown could link up with the remaining forwards for a good gain.
If both options are explored successfully by Au and NZ then it may disrupt the fold defence and expose rushing front line.

Coach’s Corner Issue 24: When the whingeing stops, these Boks can really play!

I think we’ll all be looking for a 30-30 draw for the non AB games. Plenty of rugby but still a result that helps the ABs!
