I hope for their sake and his sake, he lifts his game and lives up to his talent. He is a good batsman to watch after all.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

I feel like you’re equal parts correct and wrong. FC runs obviously don’t translate to test runs, but if we ignore the better batsmen in FC games, then why are we bothering to have the competition in the first place?

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

Thanks Adam.

Luke, you may have noticed that in the article, I’ve been highly complimentary of Marsh’s one day batting. He regularly bats well for WA and AUS when he’s in the coloured uniform. So yes, I would have picked him. I’ve thought for a long time that Watson needs to give up either T20Is or ODIs in order to extend his test career, and Marsh would be a good replacement in either in the top order.

Adam has rightfully pointed out Marsh’s FC record and test records are not up to standard.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

If these are the alternatives to Watson batting at 3, keep Watson at 3. Flawed yes, but averaging over 40 is our best result froma number 3 since Ponting. For the love of god I hope Doolan plays ahead of Marsh. Marsh being picked must be soul-crushing for shield players.

Bailey dropped for South Africa tour: Marsh, Pattinson, Bird recalled

Thought I’d quickly add, that the selectors have listened finally…

… and selected Shaun Marsh for the squad to SA in February. So there it is.

“Shield runs will get you selected” or, better translated to “a few runs against a team that’s been demolished and has zero confidence in its ability to win, in a format that is entirely different to this one, will get you selected”.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

Most teams try and use him to anchor the innings and gradually tee off (if he’s still around) in the last few overs.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

Hard to not be a fan of a bloke who bowls 145km/h outswingers!

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

I can’t stand Tubby and love Langer, but I agree with you. This article isn’t about condemning Shaun Marsh for the rest of his career, but instead it’s about how he’s always been like this, and still needs to improve. Whether that means that at age 30, his career is done, isup to you.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

I have no problem with Bailey, Maxwell or Marsh staking claims for the test team, but the best place to do it is in the shield.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

CA are in a difficult spot with pattinson. He looked completely underdone yesterday, but because of the schedule, they have no other avenues to get him prepared for SA.

Not that bowling ten overs in odi matches is preparation either.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

It’s way too early to say anything about Mitch who’s only 22 (?) And is enjoying a pretty reasonable shield season. His pace is down on previous years, having just come back from injury, but he’ll want to fix that.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

Has there ever been a suggestion that he could have left? Most other states would probably love to have him.

Shaun Marsh's hall of mirrors

Ashes tons this year: Kp – 1, Cook – 0.

KP the scapegoat for Ashes debacle, and it's a disgrace

So that means he only scored 156 in a row without getting out?

Voges should replace Bailey in South Africa

He’s similar, but I would suggest that he’s more of a hitter, where is Agar’s more of a strokemaker.

BBL preview: Perth Scorchers vs Adelaide Strikers - WACA, Perth

Especially since Ferguson’s a genuine middle order bat, Hughes is struggling, and Head is the shield number 3. Wouldn’t Hales, Dean, Head then Ferg make more sense?

BBL preview: Perth Scorchers vs Adelaide Strikers - WACA, Perth

Yeah, I reckon you’re right. If I was playing the scorchers and won the toss, I’d go all in on batting first. Their batting is a bit fragile (especially without S Marsh) and under the weight of having to chase something down, I reckon would be dodgy.

Can’t believe they’re not playing Agar though. I’d have him opening and give him license to have a crack. Was far from their worst performer at the champions league.

Really keen to get another look at Travis Head and Pat Cummins. Both very young, talented and tipped to feature fairly often for the national sides over the next decade or so.

I know he’s got a nice batting average of around 45 in T20s, but has Hughes always been a number 3 for the strikers?

BBL preview: Perth Scorchers vs Adelaide Strikers - WACA, Perth

The only place (at the moment) where you could play Hughes at 6 is probably South Africa, because of the minimal turn on offer for spinners.

Can we really afford to pick Hughes now though? Does anyone who had been watching shield matches think he’s improved against spinners? Because the tour to the UAE against Pakistan after SA, with Ajmal, would just be a repeat of Hughes’ India if he hasn’t.

Have the selectors turned their back on Phil Hughes?

I agree JGK. But Peterson’s average has dropped to 38, Duminy’s to 32, while Faf was battling for his spot before that 134 against India, as he seems to only make runs when he’s completely up against it (not the worst trait to have I guess, but needs to make runs when there’s only some, or at least less pressure). And this is without mentioning Kallis’ replacement, who will no doubt be a lesser option. Kallis may have regressed in his later years, but he still held up the number 4 spot and made runs against our attack over here in late 2012. Losing him is massive.

ASHES: Talking points as Australia win 5-0

I’d agree, in part. Bowling to me looks like it’s gotten better, whereas batting lineups have gotten weaker. Even SA have a dodgy batting lineup (Peterson/Duminy/FAF when he isn’t playing for a draw/Whoever they find to replace Kallis). But it surely has a bit to do with the lack of prep games prior to starting an overseas series. Always easier to bowl than bat in foreign conditions.

ASHES: Talking points as Australia win 5-0

Can’t believe Borthwick was firstly picked, and then bowled bugger all overs in the second innings. I honestly had no understanding of that. If they didn’t rate him, then why not just pick a fourth seamer (disregarding stokes) since it was a green wicket? Felt sorry for the bloke.

ASHES: Talking points as Australia win 5-0

What a win. I’m pretty stoked, because I’m nearing the end of my uni degree and I think this will be my last chance to watch the majority of each home test, and it’s certainly a good one to pull up stumps on! The fact that this isn’t a team of superstars makes it a bit better in my opinion, since I feel like I can relate to blokes like Lyon who just try as hard as they can.

I would imagine Foxtel’s ratings for the first AUS vs SA test are going to be much higher than they have in the past. Our batting’s still a bit dodgy as people have pointed out, but it is improving. I remember when no one other than Clarke or Hussey could make a hundred, but now someone seems to be making one each innings. In fact, the only two innings from this whole series where we didn’t have a hundred scored were the first at the Gabba and the first at the G. But even then, Haddin made 94 at the Gabba. They’re improving, and who better to test yourself against, then the likes of Steyn, Philander and Morkel?

Thanks for the articles too Ronan. Looking forward to more.

ASHES: Talking points as Australia win 5-0

Pattinson is certainly injury prone, but I wouldn’t say the same of Starc and Bird. Plus when you consider how all three are approaching a better age for fast bowlers (all are around or past the age of 24) their bodies should be becoming more sustainable. We’re probably a couple of years away from seeing too much of Cummins in the whites though from the sounds of things.

Doolan and Coulter-Nile must play at Sydney

“Doolan doesn’t strike me as being a genuine middle order option anyway”

He did make 161 not out against South Africa batting at number 6.

Doolan's selection could solve the Watson imbalance
