I’d like the FA to fund a Canberra A-league and NPL side/s.
Does anyone know if a national body can fund a club directly? What are FIFA rules?

With the plan to sell their talent OS.

Youngest ever Australia Cup scorer, another electric talent from Adelaide, and sons of Socceroos: Meet the future of Australian football

I have to agree!
But his club form has not been great either.

Are we a mature enough football nation to honestly discuss the Socceroos?

I agree the tactics, the amount of defensive like players packed into a midfield was also very strange?

This was also did to the ultra defensive midfield. There was no ball passer or attacking minded DM which then stifled any movement.

Blind Freddie could see this would happen whenever the tea sheet was called.

Metcalfe, Baccus and Irvine means no width or intricate diamond/ triangular passing.

Are we a mature enough football nation to honestly discuss the Socceroos?

Let’s be frank here this was a missed opportunity. Defending a 1-0 Advantage and putting a player on that virtually had no minutes was reckless.

But having no movement, as well as not studying the Koreans issues as a team was what undid Australia.
We lost the game as we tried to defend for 70 mins. Why not bring a Yengi, even Tilio for the 2nd Half to run at a tired Korea.

Not sure playing pragmatic Arnie football would ever get a result at the Asian cup?

Our midfield has no control and can be stifled with the likes of 3 DM like players. Baccus ok, Irvine ok. But Metcalfe as well. This leaves the team very flat. A Nisbet, even a Tilio could have given more freedom to the wings and wing backs? The movement was so predictable.

I believe there are players in the setup and some extras that could be a good team with the likes of Robertson, Volpato, Nisbet, even Hrustic.

Attack is the best for of defence and the tactics failed Australia again.

We would have arguably lost against Jordan playing pragmatic football with virtually no movement – if we beat Korea.

Boyle was useless in the tournament and his days must be numbered, Duke was inept and didn’t even press like his usual self – which must of been the tactics to sit back.

We let Korea play and great teams never let their opponents play.

It was the same old situation with Arnie.
I believe we have the right players in the squad but not the right players in the park.

Miller should be the right back in this current squad. I’m not sure why he has not got a look in at all.

Tilio with his energy could offer more. Bos is more effective at fullback with his marauding runs and his positioning is a lot better than Behich at present. Bos is more willing to take his player on. Yes, there might be the occasional mistake but this is where the wingers drop back to help.

Besides Boyle’s goal, he did not offer much this game and lost the ball quite a bit.
Jones is not the answer and I think Boyle needs the freedom of a fullback that can open up the space for Boyle. So this partnership of Boyle and Jones is ineffective – the overlapping runs are nearly nonexistent. Miller would and is the better option.

Going of current form I believe CCM Josh Nisbet, could be the key here. Laying off to a Duke, Yengi, or even a Silver (past experience).

Circati, Robertson, or even a Volpato would be also a shoo-in with this current squad.

Would A-Leagues fans rather talk about VAR, or the football on the pitch?

No meant the other night in terms of weeks ago. I’m a United fan as well, but had to forgo my ticket for the last game.

Was going to see them play. On a positive note it would be great to see FCK (Copenhagen) get out of the group stage.

There is only ever one 'must-see' fixture in the A-League Men each week

Hi Garry,
Regarding pt 3.
I do see these as being part of the same umbrella but the promoting of the 2 in my view should be kept separate. I did prefer it when it was the A-League and the W-league. It did not eat into each others identity. I think it can happen eventually but the league is too immature at this stage.

Active fan groups, with families would help both. The fans are key to a better selling product as you are aware of.

We all know that if we want to be a part of the raucous we sit behind the goal mouth of the home team. It is a spectacle like I witnessed live the other night when Bayern played FC Copenhagen in the champions league.
We can choose if we want to be an active supporter or a sideline positioned supporter (which I prefer).
As you see the width of the field better and movements of players with and without the ball.

To answer your question we can have both. I love seeing the giant tiffo’s being rolled out mocking the opposing team. This all adds to the fun.

What I think the APL could try in partnership with Isuzu is, that every millionth ticket sold the person of that ticket wins an Isuzu car, cash or some club experience. Or even best dressed fan for that game or fan engagement on Apps/ before the game to vote on best dressed.

This would also harp back to the fact that the fans can experience more if they participate. Also the media could also announce this with their sponsors. This would be win win, for all parties, with the chance of rewarding everyone to get through those turnstiles.

I also d like the carnival atmosphere (for kids) pre game entertainment outside of the grounds, where football games (like shooting a target into a hole/target), can win that clubs products. Make it great for the family but also exciting for the hardcore active fan.

I still haven’t bought the tickets yet as I need to check how many friends I can take with me. I normally take a few, who love football but only see the games when I’m around. It’s always a fun day with banter and hopefully a good game of football.

I am an optimist and I believe we can have both – active and family support. This works. The aim is to get those future kids to either play and stay in the game or to become an active member.

Thanks Mike for the article,
Some very good points added.
The biggest issue is the marketing or lack of it. I work as a creative and while I live abroad in Denmark, I’m an avid fan of our league. I’m astounded that there has been very little to no publicity of the launch and identifying our leagues uniqueness and USP.
The campaign that I believe had the greatest success was highlighting the diehard fan, making them the centerfold. I cant remember the slogan but it was emotional and people bought the message.
Moving on to now there are many factors why the fans aren’t coming and I’ll name a few;
1) Most non-fans which are not stakeholders in the sport or league think that the product is inferior before trying it. Especially the demographic that follows global football but rubbish’s our home brand.
I believe the youth this year has increased the excitement, energy and skill levels of previous years.
2) We need to be aware that those following football are doing it tough due to inflation and interest rate increases. So this could also play havoc on turnstiles.
A lot of the fans minus the capital cities are doing it tough (western Sydney, Western Melbourne, Central Coast and Newcastle, key traditional blue collar areas.
3) The APL cannibalised the brands key focus and USP, by merging the men’s and women’s game into 1.
Yes we should be inclusive but only until the market is strong and mature enough. When you browse on the Aleague men’s site, the viewer is confused with mixed messaging of the females game, and merging of 2 unique brands and styles. It’s equivalent to blending the A league with the NPL, or League 1 with the premier League.
4) The MSM rarely creates drive or puff pieces for future Socceroo stars or current A League stars, which should be the pinnacle for every Australian footballer dreaming of making it to the top.
So what can we do?
We can highlight the Leagues USP, which are the fans, we should promote the diehard and tell their story, whilst engaging sports or non A league football fans. Without them/us there is no game.
Bring back vocal fan groups and they will bring the atmosphere. I believe the on field product is excellent at the moment and the players would lift their game.
I saw Old Boys play Boca yesterday with my Argentinian friend, and we both agreed the game was horrendous. I showed him some goals from this weekend and round 2 of The ALeague and he mentioned that “there are some good players” in your league.
The product is there on field but we need to engage the one off supporter or non supporter.
Can anyone tell me during the fanfests for the men’s World Cup were the A league clubs or A League surveying the fans around the live screens?
Did they also survey fans at the Women’s World Cup?

Thanks Grem for the tip! I definitely will.

Hi Garry thanks for the reply, I pressed that but then I cannot purchase without selecting a new box which the cheapest from memory was another $65 per ticket which is weird.

Hi All football lovers, I’m looking forward to the new season and look forward to the unearthing of new gems.

I have a question, I’m an expat living in Denmark, and am planning a trip to see
my Syd Fc play in February.

For some reason when I buy tickets the checkout price for standard view for 2 tickets becomes $250? Why?
Are tickets only for sale when purchasing a membership.

Ticketeks pricing makes no sense?

Can anyone explain?
I have a question re ticket prices.
