Hi Jeff. I really like your 8 team proposal above with a bare minimum of 8-10 matches completed before the first test of the summer. I have been screaming from the rooftops for a similiar arrangment.
CA in my opinion, is deliberately or otherwise slowly suffocating our Sheffield Shield competition in order to keep the ‘BBL golden goose’ as the number one domestic competition in the country at the expense of red ball 4-day cricket.
Your above idea is exactly what is needed to maintain a pathway and foundation to our Test team otherwise we’ll be selecting guys that average 26.00 but at a strike rate of 150.00.

Bubble or not, the Sheffield Shield must be Cricket Australia's priority

The BBL needs fewer matches – but more teams

I totally agree Larry. I’ve been saying for far too long now that Cricket Australia has abondoned its committment to Sheffield Shield because it doesnt raise enough revenue and cannot produce a profit. But hey, that clearly doesn’t matter when the BBL is the ‘goose that laid the golden egg’.
There has been no Shield game since November and the next fixture isn’t till February 11th and we wonder why we have no batting depth in this country.
If you haven’t already, have a read through this seasons Shield Batting and Bowling aggregates and averages. It takes me longer to read an obituary. Players on the fringe of test selection have played 3 or 4 Shield games and the numbers aren’t very pretty. So now, we have no other barometer than to look to the BBL to select players for our Test team. I’ll say it again, do you think the BCCI would play the IPL during the Ranji Trophy competition? No chance.

Depth issues mean few changes for South Africa tour

Well said James. You’ve said it all. My sentiments exactly. 👍
Cricket Australia places little to no importance on the Sheffield Shield. They say they do but their actions (or lack thereof more precisely) speaks volumes.
It’s our highest level, first class domestic red ball competition in the country and they completely take it’s importance and relevance to the future of our test team for granted. Why? Because there is no money in it.
Until Cricket Australia regroups, reschedules and puts a real priority on Sheffield Shield then we will continue to just drift along hoping somewhere and somehow that we’ll jag another Ricky Ponting or Steve Waugh.
Do you think the BCCI schedules the IPL at the same time as the Ranji Trophy? No chance.

Not only is the sky not falling, this Australian Test team is really good!

I couldn’t agree with you more. Well said. 👍
The last Shield game ended on November 11th and the next one starts February 12th.
Anyone that is potentially capable to play test cricket is now too busy honing their ramps, reverse sweeps, scoops, helicopters and any other low percentage scoring, ‘get out’ BBL shots. The Shield competition used to be played from September through to March/April and was our top flight competition for our future test players. In my opinion, it’s all but been reduced to a semi-regular ‘bookended’ competition in order to stage the primetime TV BBL.
With players under pressure to score quickly and to all parts of the ground is it any wonder we have no serious test level batting depth in this country.
I shudder to think where we would be right now if it wasn’t for Smudge and Marnus.

I couldnt agree more John, you’re spot on. The last Shield game ended on November 11th and the next fixture begins February 12th and we wonder why we have no depth in our batting. Anyone who is half decent is currently off honing their ramp, reverse sweep, scoop, helicopter or some other low percentage scoring, get out shot. Yes, I understand CA needs the BBL scheduled in on primetime television at some stage during the school holidays to help rake in revenue but should it be at the expense of the very breeding ground for our national test team?
