Well Nemo decided to be subtle in his views, masking his language but still making clear what he thought is a correlation: “people that don’t like full contact sports and Sydneys gay and lesbian communities”.

Given that gays are a small minority (why pick them out of all the possible demographics?) and this is Nemo speaking, known league zealot (league zealots are known for their use of ‘gayfl’) it is fair to assume he is alluding to ‘gayfl’, not very mature now is it.

Nemo thought he was writing cleverly, but not clever enough to hide his agenda. Watch for his deliberately obtuse response.

The myths of NRL players moving to the AFL

“And you’re the one saying it’s a slur.”

Redb didn’t say “gay” is a slur, he said the pejorative expression ‘gayfl’ is a slur, which it is. The effective message is something negative and describing it as ‘gay’.

You have completely misinterpreted what he was saying.

The myths of NRL players moving to the AFL

Well if there is such a strong level of support for soccer in Australia, why don’t all these so called ‘supporters’ put their money where their mouth is?

We’ve known the ‘participation rate fallacy’ regarding soccer has been debunked again and again throughout history. Kids playing soccer =/= $ and lifetime commitment.

The price mechanism displays the collective knowledge of market participants, i.e. it reflects the supply and demand conditions of that market. The resulting prices being understood as signals that are communicated between producers and consumers which serve to guide the production and distribution of resources.

I’ll try and simply that just for you: substitute the word ‘demand’ for ‘level of support’

Seeing as the NRL & AFL and perhaps ARU (?) have larger levels of net profit, it follows they have larger levels of demand for their product in order to generate such profit. They are selling more of their product, therefore they have larger profits and thus larger levels of support than soccer.

Seeing as FFA/soccer have bugger all money (relative to its competitors), it follows they are selling less of their product and haven’t got a comparable level of support.

Sport, like culture, is not homogeneous.

But yeah, continue with that rhetoric that we’re somehow ‘unsporting’ for not taking an interest in ONE sport of several to be enjoyed. Hope you realise how much BS that contains.

Soccer is a sport, but sport =/= soccer.

“We see the USA as the major ’soccer’ calling nation.”

Well when it comes to the Anglosphere all countries bar United Kingdom call it soccer (plus a couple mixed English speaking countries as well e.g. South Africa). Americans are just one of many.

So really wherever you travel throughout the world, if the locals mostly speak English, they most likely call the game ‘soccer’.

I think this point irks a few people.

Plus they’re trying palm off the long term pain to the taxpayer and their competing rivals.

“The ‘opinions’ of NRL and AFL fans who know nothing about any sport except their own is much more scientific.”

As opposed to the subjective opinions expressed by yourself…?

Why is it, that only soccer fans ever use the term ‘sockah’? Apparently the term is expressed pejoratively against soccer, but I only ever see soccer fans using it!

What a fascinating insight into the soccer inferiority complex.

“Its completely unfair to say that… soccer fans see the world cup as a means of ‘destroying’ other codes… I certainly don’t see it that way. None of the soccer fans that I know and speak to see it that way.”

A quick visit to 442 & TWG forums will change your mind!

Net profit is the most reliable indicator. The price mechanism does not lie.

Fed Labor may be ideologically progressive, but they are most certainly not optimistic, looks like you’ve fallen for some grade-A spin.

Parties that shy away from individualist policy are inherently pessimistic, i.e. ‘people are idiots and too irresponsible to take care of themselves, therefore they need lotsa gubmint help!’

Ken said “…any claim that it is a sign of the countries desire though is a bridge too far.”

Point exactly. If it were the countries’ desire, then there wouldn’t be any need for government intervention. If there was a quid to be made from the WC, the free market would have absolutely jumped on it by now (especially given its… ‘The World Game!’), plus we all know how everything government touches turns to crap.
