LOL yep I remember moving from Sydney to Albury in the 90’s and the local Ovens & Murray Aussie rules comp got bigger coverage than rugby league and union put together! State of origin wasn’t shown live – had to watch a midnight replay. And that’s in NSW!
My wife is from Melbourne and she didn’t know until she moved to Sydney that there were two kinds of rugby.
They love to say Melbourne is this sporting capitol, but in reality it host a lot of big events that attract masses of people from outside Melbourne, which is the point. The born and bred locals only really love AFL as a weekly event.

I think we also need to recognise that RA takes a top down approach because that is all they can do. They run the Wallabies and the high-performance stuff, but they don’t run the state unions and they don’t run the club competitions. And my long term impression is that the state unions and club competitions don’t actually give a stuff about what RA or the Wallabies want – they want to run their little worlds to suit themselves, and themselves alone. Allowing for plenty of poor decisions from RA over the years, the reality is that RA sits on top of a rotten structure and has very little money, and very little control over the things that would fundamentally need to change for the Wallabies to be world class in about 20 years time.

Its an interesting point. Yet I see plenty of leaders with that steely mental strength and unflappable decision-making that gets their team home when they didn’t play better than the other side in other professional sports in Australia – e.g. Smith, Thurston, Cronk etc. in RL.
Sometimes I wonder if Rugby has missed out on these types of guys because it’s either not looking for them or because there is something about the RU pathway or culture than doesn’t attract or keep guys like that?

Could not agree more about the over-the-top sanctimony about the ball tampering itself (as opposed to the cover up and lying/obfuscating afterward).
Would love to see how many 12 month bans we could rack up in any one game of football of any code if this is the standard!

It’s the same story of the last 16 years. They are always inconsistent and only really pull out a good performance in dead rubbers or when their backs are completely against the wall. From Eddie Jones tenure until now, they will not step forward with their best when it really counts.
