Interesting observation. Bold move if true for sure.

'Statement game': Brumbies smash Moana Pasifika as Lolesio, Wright and Toole light up Canberra

Five things we learned: The general who caught Schmidt's eye, why next week is vital for Coleman's Tahs

I agree. There’s thousands/millions of other places to go for people who want to talk about their social and political views and experiences and what they think or hate about other stuff. Let’s not make the Roar just another one. I think column writers like Geoff have a privileged position and so have to set the tone and lead by example if the Roar is going to remain a place to just read and talk about rugby. That’s my hope at least.

ANALYSIS: McLennan's fatal blind spot, and why his exit leaves Australian rugby in a better place and a worse one

Still hoping EJ brings in Lonergan at 9 re calm, game management and kicking.

Studs and duds: Eddie's 'wrongheaded' selections, Carter '100 percent a concern', 'weapon' fires at last

Goal kicking is the glaring concern for me, which is why am suprised not using Lonergan as 9 for Carter. Hopefully Carter practising a lot in camp. Would be a shame if we played well but still go out early due to a missed conversion or two.

The Wrap: Is Eddie Jones playing the role of Keyser Soze or Frank Drebin?

I’d pair Gordon with Lonergan in 2024, which could be a proverbial game changer if both keep improving as they have and team injuries reduce to allow continuity etc

The Wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies show off all of Test rugby’s perfection and imperfections

I remember the night game in the snow, legs went numb! Used to be great taking our little kids to the arvo games when we lived there, and they enjoyed the atmosphere, but much harder at night. I think afternoon games would get more families for sure.

Two issues the Brumbies need to address urgently – plus one they can’t control at all

I think a key factor is the lack of gap between teams at line out. Some ref’s have a nice wide one and others it seems not much wider than the ball itself! Pretty hard for the hooked when they get that as their target I reckon.

The Wrap: Finals picture still unclear after a difficult week for rugby

My question too re goal kicking, especially under test match pressure. Hopefully he can, but will need SR practice.

Carter Gordon has the gift of time - but how long until he gets to test himself in a Wallabies jersey?

I’m guessing he’s still not confident with his achilles, seems to be holding back his technique. Hopefully will come good asap. Work rate effectiveness also not quite to his standard I think, likely from lack of matches. He remains pretty much unstoppable from 2m out on pick and go, which is good sign.

'Gorilla running up Oxford St': Tahs smash Force to get season started as Perese finally comes to life

Good article, worth considering I reckon. 👍

Why Italy beating Australia and Georgia beating Wales is great for Aussie and Welsh rugby

Looks very good Nic. Would swap Foley with Noah, and Lonergan for Nasser myself (he could mentor the other 2 as he knows the systems already, and because he’s a different type of player to them, so gives DR a bit more flexibility to adjust the team balance on the fly if injuries or other issues)

Coach's corner: Who should be in Rennie's World Cup squad? And will Jones make it to the tournament?

Though based on this analysis, it seems that Noah (and JOC, Nard) have not had a real chance as yet. At least during 2022.

Very interesting strategy NB illustrates, I wonder if there’s method in the (apparent) coaching madness, or is it just madness. Am hoping there’s a cunning plan there somewhere…

ANALYSIS: Time to pray Australia, because it's Quade Cooper or bust for the RWC. And when he's gone there's no one else

My 2c.

Am hoping Nick Bishop will have a look at this game this week. Perhaps Noah could have done something different, or perhaps not.

Setting up a try, kicking goals and no big mistakes, especially on a night like that, doesn’t seem too bad to me. Even more so when he’s not had a chance to play much for quite a while.

As for bossing the team around, noting 12 new faces, the lack of test caps, the absence of so many of our best and in-form players in positions across the field, I lean towards what another poster said: even Dan Carter in his heyday would have struggled to be an effective dictator/director of play in that game. At the end of the day, a general is only as good as the troops they have available.

ANALYSIS: The Wallabies have backed the wrong horse as their No.10 project

Don’t forget his 1 test so far was against SA in SA, and he did OK there I recall. Also has a couple more years experience, and works hard all game. Will be interesting to see how he goes if he does get a run vs England.

Wallabies vs England squads confirmed: Australia's key selection calls and both teams' predicted first Test lineups

Good point. Will be interesting to see what Rennie does with 12 for sure.

Perhaps Simonne could hire Stirling Mortlock for private lessons in the joys of running through brick walls! 😁

How the Wallabies are building cohesion towards 2023

Hi Nick. Perhaps Simone at 12, noting established combination with Ikitau and White? Might be worth taking him on the EOYT at least, to see how he gels in their structure at training, and for experience.

How the Wallabies are building cohesion towards 2023

Hi Nick

Hopefully not too late.

I note you (and some others) don’t think Tom Banks is international standard at the moment. Am interested as to what specific errors he’s made this year (vs AB and French) that leads you to this conclusion. And, especially, what another FB would have done better. Thanks very much.

Great article, thanks.

Guts and grit: How Wallabies won a game they've lost so many times before

Not Lolesio for the kicks? He had pretty good stats I think in Super. Hodge would be a good backup from the bench though, including for much of the backline.

Last man standing: Can Tate McDermott seize his day against the French?

Thanks Mo

Coach's Corner Issue 7: What position for Petaia?

Thanks Nick. Interesting that it’s obviously quite a different skill set for THP vs LHP. Are there many examples of modern day players who succeeded at both?

Coach's Corner Issue 7: What position for Petaia?

Interesting point stillmissit. I wonder if there’s stats on that, I haven’t noticed it being an issue for HJH versus other props. Maybe when he’s had to switch sides? And more generally with him and his fellow Tah props, I also wonder about the support they are getting from behind. I don’t recall Harry having problems before, such as against the Boks in SA back in 2019 (where he had a solid group around him); I expect this would have shown up as any issues with his technique. Unless he’s gone backwards in that area for whatever reason – perhaps he’s just knackered from all the running and tacking. 😂

Coach's Corner Issue 7: What position for Petaia?

Thanks Nick. 👍 40 runs and 40 tackles, plus set piece, rucks and off ball work!!! That seems a massive amount for a prop, noting also the speed of Super level games. Do you think that’s down to HJH’s personal work ethic (my guess), or something the coaches have asked for? At the very least, nobody could say that Harry’s not putting in for the Tahs.

Coach's Corner Issue 7: What position for Petaia?

Hi Nick

Two from me – thanks in advance for your consideration 😊

1. Would love an analysis of the outside-in defence. Are m/any pro teams using it anymore, either as their default or in specific situations? It seems to me to be a better option than the slide wherever the defence can get set in time, especially from 10-15m outwards from the ruck/scrum/LO. Positives include that it negates speed deficits, regularly puts the defender in the receiver’s blind spot, and encourages attackers to step back into traffic for easier tackles/turnovers (rather than using the width). Am guessing its not as practical where slow forwards are mixed in with backs out wide, but is there something else preventing its wider use (especially at set piece)? Or am I just not noticing it happening?

2. Would also like an analysis of the modern role/expectations of a prop. I note TT has a lot of focus now for his powerful set piece and running, but wonder how his game (or Sio and Slipper etc.) compares overall to less fancied players such as HJH (in particular)? I tend to find myself watching Harry more than others (due to the Newcastle connection), and he seems to do a huge amount of work in both attack and defence, much more so than other props like TT. Would be great to see the stats/assessment of key metrics – runs/metres gained, positive ruck involvements, off-the ball work, tackles attempted/made etc. My impression is that HJH is well in front overall, but TT has more of the ‘big plays’, which can be just as (or even more) valuable from a team morale and spectator excitement point of view.

Thanks again
