I mentioned Hibbert but it was no secret that Dank and Robinson were at Manly during a very successful run. Dank and Robinson were both later at Sharks for about six weeks and then Essendon. History tells us that PODs were used at both the Sharks and The Bombers. I believe the only thing that saved the Sea Eagles from getting done for the same breaches was that evidence had long been gotten rid of by that stage and ASADA had their hands full with The Sharks and The Bombers fallout.

Parramatta only broke the 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not get caught

I don’t believe sporting competitions like the NFL and NHL have had too many Salary Cap scandals in recent seasons. Players salaries are nearly always announced and it is way more transparent with the number of years the player signs for, guaranteed money and contract money due in subsequent seasons etc. Not sure if this would work in the NRL though.

Casper, only a one eyed Queenslander would call Langer’s dangerous attempts at tackles as throws. Halves like Mortimer and Speechley actually tackled around the legs and chopped players down fairly. Langer’s were trips, first point of contact was always the leg coming out. The Broncos (mostly care of the arrogant Channel Nein network) have been gifted long turn arounds for years with the prime Friday Night games. Perhaps the Eels could have done what Andrew Gee did when asked about an amount of $300,000 in suspect player payments. Andrew couldn’t recall of course and the Broncos as is their arrogant style, brushed the NRL on the issue. The NRL wasn’t allowed to even entertain the notion of trying to fill the void left by the Crushers in Brisbane when the comp reformed in 98 because the Broncos insisted on having a ten year deal where there would be no second team in a growing, league mad city with a gleaming new stadium. You wonder why many league fans despise the Broncos as much as they do The Sea Eagles.

Tim, the Greatest Game of All is certainly in a mess. Since 2002 we’ve now had three Salary Cap scandals, a peptide scandal and Manly’s titles against Warriors and Storm dubious at best due to their “High Performance” programs with Hibbert, Dank and Robinson (the Sea Eagles obviously far better than the Sharks at keeping that program out of the media – apart from claims of calves blood being used) and let’s not forget Andrew Gee, the Eddie Obeid of the NRL world who had sudden issues with his memory over an amount of $300,000 that couldn’t be accounted for and the Broncos nicely dodged the NRL on that one. I agree with you, the NRL simply needs to penalise all involved who have broken the rules. I’d like to think that lessons have been learnt from the peptides/supplements saga and that teams won’t go down that path again. Unfortunately, after the punishments dished out to the Bulldogs, The Storm and now The Eels, I don’t believe some of the clubs will stop their wheeling and dealing ways when it comes to creative accounting for player payments.

I think both comps (NRL and AFL) have ambiguities and grey areas in their rules and I think that suits them and neither admin seems in a hurry to solve said grey areas. The stripping rule/knock on in league still does my head in and these days in the AFL I can’t tell what half the frees are paid for. I believe for both leagues that the TV product is very, very important and trying to keep games and penalty/free counts close is what you will see.

Butt out Bunker, leave it to the on-field officials

The Bunker’s intrusion on the Bukuya tackle late in the Sharks v Bronocs game made my blood boil. To rub salt into the wound, the NRL decide they need to back up the Bunker by hitting Bukuya with a Grade One charge. There was no shoulder charge or high hit.

Yet The Broncos were awarded a try against The Sharks which was an obstruction if you want to follow the new rules/guidelines.

Jamie Lyin': How to fix the NRL's obstruction woes

Hey Greenberg, you might want to give Andrew Gee and The Broncos a nudge. They still can’t explain an amount of $300,000 in player payments, supposedly third party. Punish cheaters but punish all clubs who cheat.

Parramatta Eels to be docked 12 points, fined $1 million for salary cap breaches

Have been a Sharks fan since the mid eighties and rarely seen them complete a full eighty minutes. It is very, very frustrating to watch them get a lead then let it fritter away. In saying that, I do believe the Broncos were piggy backed by some soft penalties in the second half and then of course there was the call from the bunker late in the game for a non existent shoulder charge. I like the mix of players they club have put together but who knows if they will rid themselves of the chokers tag if they do indeed get to September and semi final football.

Sharks need killer instinct to complete the package
