From everything I have researched and read, I was of the understanding that the clubs were not allowed to be involved in anything to do with sourcing, negotiating or guaranteeing TPA’s. It was all supposed to be conducted at arms length but (on the face of it) it doesn’t appear to be that way.
Also, the introduction of TPA’s was originally meant to supplement the elite players income and allow them to earn what they were worth, but for some clubs it is seen to be supplementing the salary cap position of all players on the roster, not just the elite.
Explain how a mediocre player like Korbin Sims can leave Newcastle on a rumoured 400k contract and go to Broncos for $85k on 2nd tier contract without TPA’s being sourced by the club.
Explain how a quality player like Matt Gillett can take a rumoured 300-500k per annum less than elsewhere…
To most, if it looks like a duck, it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, then there is the very real possibility it is a duck – if a contract negotiation looks dodgy, sounds dodgy and smells dodgy, then it most likely is but the NRL continues to ignore it until a disgruntled employee or agent makes a complaint.
While I understand your view that it is a market economy and clubs with market power should be able to exercise it, in reality the introduction of a salary cap ensured that the market economy didn’t exist and an even spread of talent, with each club having the opportunity to compete for a player on a level playing field, did.
Do we want to return to the “good” old days where its a two or three tier competition (take EPL for example – you know pretty much which clubs are going to be there at the end) with Broncos, Roosters, Storm tying up and stockpiling talent to ensure that they are the ones competing for big prize.

The NRL's silence on TPAs is deafening

scott, I think you can take the eels off your advatanged clubs list for TPA’s – I would be extremely doubtful if any TPA would have been approved by NRL of late and if the Eels would have sought them to be.

The NRL's silence on TPAs is deafening

Is the roster and depth any better than it was in 2016? On first look, the answer is a resounding no. Bulldogs are one of the few clubs who haven’t appeared to strengthen their roster, so anyone other than a died in the wool doggies supporter would find it hard to justify that there will be any improvement on 2016 results. Most will predict that they, like the Broncos, will go backward in 2017. How far backwards? Well that’s up to Des to determine – if he reacts to 2016 and changes the style of play and allow the halves to ball play rather than distribute, then they are a bit of a chance.
2017 will be a telling year for the likes of Des, Mbye, Hopoate and Lichaa who, if things go as many predict, may be looking for a new home at the end of the season or their contract (whichever comes first).
Having Hoppa as 1st choice FB shouldn’t excite any one other John, he lacks creativity, pace and is unwilling to take a chance.
Good luck in 2017..

Canterbury Bulldogs in 2017: Off-season, what to look for, and prediction

I, for one, am not surprised at Manly supporters “glass is nearly full” opinion of their team and the recruitment that has occurred over the off-season. Its in their DNA to talk it up – good on em.
However, it must be said that the departures and arrivals do not net each other out in an way – the loss of Buhrer, Starling, Matai, Stewart, Lyon against Uate, Lane, Perrett, Sironen, Green etc ???
Perrett, Lane and Sironen are journeyman at best – all three struggled to get game time in teams that are much worse on paper than Manly.
The fact that Perrett and Lane are regularly shopped around to other clubs should make you question either their ability, the dedication or their attitude.
Throw in a winger who cant catch a ball, is half the pace he used to be and couldn’t make it as a reserve to the reserve grade team.
Green may be more than serviceable but time will tell if he reaches the heights he did at the Storm.
Hastings has potential if he changes his attitude.
If they make the 8, then it would be an exceptional year and everything went right, but when there are so many gambles on players, not all of them will come off and a finish of 12-14 is more realistic.

Manly Sea Eagles in 2017: Off-season, what to look for, and prediction

The whole arms length approach is blatantly not working.
When you see clubs, such as the Broncos (and they are not alone) having entities like “The Thoroughbreds” operating to bring about TPA’s for the players thus making it more enticing for a club to sign a player that they would not otherwise been able to afford under the salary cap, the whole situation becomes a farce and laughable.
The rich clubs are reported to have between 1mil and 1.7mil extra to “spend” on talent.
You cant tell me or the general public that when player X is being courted, TPA’s are not on the negotiating table and being discussed by the club, players and agents. Would a player genuinely sign on with a club without a guarantee from whoever is offering the contract that TPA’s would be met? It is not in their or their agents nature to risk loss of income.
It is blatantly obvious and the NRL continues to bury its head in the sand on this issue.
Situations such as what occurred at the Eels in relation TPA’s would be rife throughout NRL clubland except that they are not recorded (on tape or paper) like was done at the Eels.
TPA’s are a blight on the salary cap enforcement and gives certain clubs a legup, which the salary cap was originally designed to put a stop to.

i just thank the stars that hes not at the eels anymore

NRL 2017 season preview: South Sydney Rabbitohs

not sure you can take too much our of the trial results – for instance
Manly – played a 2nd/3rd string rabbits side in 1st trial while playing a fair number of first choice players then had a win over the 15th placed team from 2016.
Knights – 44-0 over Raiders….is that going to make them top 4? Nah.
Eels – a smattering of first choice/bench players from the Titans against an Eels team which was essentially the ISP Wenty Team then lost 18-6 to Panthers, at 60 min mark it was 6-6 then Wenty came on and panthers scored a couple.
WCC games are tricky to view – the SL teams seemed to be up for the challenge this year and are a number of games into their season but NRL teams combinations were a bit off.
Its always good for confidence if a team wins everything in trials, but you can never read too much into it come round 1.

What we learnt from the NRL trials

your depth is fine mate – you have Luke Kelly, that’s all you need. 🙂
