I agree. So many slip catches were missed with his terrible field settings. Then that disaster against the Poms. Mark Taylor was such a great skipper.

Couldn’t agree more. Add Khawaja to that list.

Superb work by Carey, Marsh and Cummins in the final innings. With India coming back in December, I hope the break will recharge our batting lineup. We haven’t won a test series against India since 2014. Still would like a youngster or two alongside Cam Green in December.

This would eventually led to the glory days of 1995-2007. Kids were blooded like the Waughs, Mark Taylor, Ian Healy, Brett Lee, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, etc. Not pick a team of veterans and wait for them all to end up like when Lillee, Marsh, Greg Chappell, went within 12 months of each other and we had a team of young, untested kids. Succession is key, pick one player from Smith, Khawaja, Labu, Head, Marsh who isn’t performing (Marsh is the only one going ok) and replace them with someone under 26 to bat at 6. Let this new player (Aaron Hardie, Ollie Davies, etc) get 7 Tests to prove themselves. If they have done well in their 7 Tests, pick another veterans who is underperforming with either bat or bowl and replace them with a youngster who is doing ok.

Test Mortem: Aussie aura living rent free in Kiwi minds, Marnus officially in a form slump, DRS needs review

This article is exactly what I have been saying since 2001. Brilliantly written. The time has come that during a dead rubber, we have to blood Ollie Davis even though he is not ready. Like Steve Waugh and Ian Craig who were thrown in before they were truly ready…and you can add Steve Smith in that too, Ollie will learn from the veterans faster this way and his struggles will make him stronger. I would as much as it irks me drop Trav for Ollie in the next dead rubber, maybe Hardie for Labu too. Let these two learn from Ussie, Smithy, Mitch and heck even Cam. Taking a punt is the first step. And if they do well….then Labu and Trav will have to work hard if they want back in. No-one not even Smithy and Lyons are entitled to a spot. It comes from performance and what is best for the Australian cricket team both now and in the future.

Pipeline running dry: Aussie selectors struggling to find young batters knocking at the door, let alone bashing it down

As someone who pushed heavily for this talented young man to take Warner’s spot, I must concede…this kid is not there and I am no longer convinced he ever will be. I think we should relegate Pucovski to the could have beens’. Hardie or McSweeney, how are they going?

With India on their way, what is everyone’s thoughts on how to correct our brittle batting lineup? I keep hearing drop Marnus and bring in Renshaw/Bancroft. Honestly I still feel that Marnus can come good, but the current openers are all wrong for him and the team. We need a younger opener to learn from either Ussie or Smith. This ageing batting line-up is too predictable and showing signs of wear and tear. In the 1980s, we gave young people a guernsey. Surely with so much experience, we could allow at least one batting and bowling spot for a youngster to profit from this experience. Watching Uzzie and Smithy meander and let the bowlers hit their groove is disheartening. If they won’t give a young player an opportunity should Trav open again? I don’t like the idea, but Smithy is no opener.

Good one, Ben

Legacy on the line: Smith competing with all-time greats, and Voges, as he takes opening gamble in final phase of career

I hope he succeeds. We need someone born after 1995 to succeed in this team. Too many veterans in this team who will be past their prime 5 years from now.
