Spare me, the Waratahs? If you Google “underachievers” the first six pages are pictures of Waratahs teams. There’s something about the joint that elevates bad players and drags good players down. Case in point, Will Skelton; while at the ‘Tahs he could be relied upon for a solid 5 minutes of effort per game. I doubt that his propensity to bludge would have changed much with advancing age, yet he is still seen by some to be something akin to the Messiah.
I seem to remember a few years ago, with the ‘Tahs in their usual Super Rugby position of the bottom six on the ladder, Cheika picking a Wallaby team with ten ‘Tah starters. In fact it could be argued that Cheika’s habit of picking ‘Tahs regardless of form was the reason he was unceremoniously booted as Wallaby coach.
The fact that the Wallaby scrum was heavily penalised during this tour is to some extent meaningless. I can’t recall a single spring tour in the last 40 years when a Wallaby, or any other SH team, didn’t have their arses handed to them by NH referees.

ANALYSIS: Will the Tahs become the new driving force in 2023 and are too many Brumbies spoiling the broth?

I thought it was more Manly’s ability to stand 3 metres off side without getting pinged when defending their line, especially when an intercept was on. Seriously. Annesley admitted as much, but rightly said that defence on the line couldn’t be looked at as it would slow the game down too much. However, when on the very few occasions that suspected off side play results in an intercept try, surely the bunker could be bought in.

Why the NRL's top four is already decided

Genia? The only half in Australia with a (very) effective pass from the base of the ruck is Powell. Genia has been great for Aus, but his time has gone. White too, at 31, has only a couple of years left at best. Powell and McDermott seem to be our best hopes for the future and should be backups for White at the WC.

All Blacks only see the red in a Wallabies bolt from the blue

“Sign Skelton fast”. Yes, for any other sport but rugby. The last thing Oz rugby needs is another 15 minute player for an 80 minute sport. We have quite enough of them already, mostly playing for the ‘Tahs.

What we know after the Wallabies' stunning Bledisloe 1 win

Might not, but will be unless they only play 5min per half. Aren’t there enough terminal bludgers picked already?

Christian Lealiifano headlines raft of changes to Wallabies team for Argentina clash

In the event of any tie in limited over matches, the first fall-back should be number of wickets lost, end of story. Only in the event of wickets being even should a super over be played.

New Zealand were robbed in the World Cup final

You can have Skelton (for the Boks). Just what SA rugby needs, another 10 minute per game player. Skelton bludged his way through his stint with the ‘Tahs and Wallabies, and you want him back?

Brilliant Brumbies must be rewarded at the Wallabies selection table after superb quarter-final

“The ‘Tahs have been underachieving for a while now”. At last we know how long a ‘while’ is: 23 years, or since Super Rugby started in 1996. There’s even talk of the Oxford Dictionary just using a photo of the ‘Tahs as the definition of underachieve.

Nine talking points from the Super Rugby quarter-finals

“Skelton worked”? These are not two words I ever expected to see side-by-side in a sentence. A player who, while “playing” for the Tahs and, somehow, the Wallabies, could be relied upon to produce around 5 minutes of yer actual rugby per half, and spend the rest of the time doing imitations of the proverbial headless chook. If the Poms have managed to fix him, good, but I’m not sure we need another show pony in the Wallabies.

The Wrap: Suva rocks as the World Cup magnet pulls players home

The Brumbies started out with a mix of local players and ‘Tahs cast-offs, and damn near made the semis first year in. You could transfer the current WB side to the Tahs and within a couple of years they’d be back to playing like a bagful of busted bums – a bit like now. A sense of entitlement and inflated egos does not make a successful team, now or ever.

Phil Kearns reckons the Jaguares should not be in Super Rugby

Immediately before Phipps’s try he did what I thought was impossible; he ran with the ball from the ruck base. Admittedly it was only for three tentative steps, but it was better than the usual two steps backwards. He’s always been good at backing up a break, but seriously, he’d have to rank behind Genia, Powell, Gordon and McDermott at present, and a long way behind White when he returns from OS.

Waratahs pinged off the park by referee Egon Seconds

Strange statement, Brett. As a Brumbies supporter I’ve held a grudge against the ‘Tahs since 1996 and I’ve never been healthier.

Five weeks to go: The Super Rugby run home

Unfortunately the cheer squad isn’t limited to one. It wasn’t that long ago when the ‘Tahs finished 12th or 13th out of 15 and still had 10 picked in the run on squad for the Wallabies. No wonder the egos and sense of entitlement that seems to be a hallmark of the ‘Tahs has lately been replicated in the Wallabies.

No need to apologise to Stuart; a refereeing display classified as “awkward” would rate as his best review ever.

The Wrap: Thrilling finishes and landmark U20 result no match for a black Audi

Another week, another series of excuses for Super Rugby’s serial underachievers, the Waratahs. With the teams that this mob have put on the paddock for the last 23 years, they should have won considerably more than one title. That they haven’t smacks of a poor culture, a misguided sense of entitlement, and ego problems. That being said, this article, and the nutterances of Kearns and the various Sydney Rugby journos certainly would not help. Illegal play is just that, and rugby has mandatory penalties to cover most instances. Perhaps Mr. Lord would like to adopt the NRL model, where referees seem to make it up as they go along; of course this would only apply to the Waratahs.
