Averaged less than 30 his first 20 Tests at no 3 behind some bung average openers. 14 of those innings v India and Australia.

His overall record in all formats since has been incredible.

When King Kohli goes, India's golden era of Test cricket goes with him

Really? You would not take Williamson who averages 6 more in Test cricket than Kohli or Stokes? Rabada?

When King Kohli goes, India's golden era of Test cricket goes with him

Williamson is an outstanding player. Has effectively opened for much of his career at 3 given NZ has had some very wobbly openers. Add to that short series, often no warm up games overseas before tests.

He is likely to finish his Test career with more tons than the rest of the fab for with less games given relative form.

He has a better ODI and T20 record than Smith and Root and top scored in the 2018 IPL.

The other thing – he is a big game player. Top scored in the WTC final in very tough conditions. Very good ODI WC average and that 85 off 47 in the T20 WC final against Australia when NZ was in a hole was amazing.

In a just world NZ would have had a 2019 WC under his leadership and did win the 2021 WTC.

Kane Williamson – you are a gem.

Really looking forward to the Australian series.

Steve Smith v Kane Williamson - is the Test series across the ditch to be their last battle?

Ponting and Hussey averaged well into 60s for a bit. Smith had amazing run but I still rate Ponting at 3 as a superior batsman.

The two factors that’ll decide whether Smith’s opening gambit is a surprising success or ill-conceived failure

It may work for the WI but I can see Smith’s average continuing to drop if he opens. He’s been somewhat protected at 4 and his eyes are not what they were.

Kolhi does not average 50 in Test cricket – very good but not elite.

Of the Fab Four, Williamson and Root are the best all-format players.

Warner is an all-time great - but he’s not Australia’s best ever multi-format player

Smith is not an all format great. Struggles for a game in IPL and while a handy ODI record, is nothing special.

Impressive. I do like Maxwell.

But Zampa. Good bowler but is there a bigger figjam in world cricket? I was watching some footage with the sound off earlier and he really does have tickets on himself.

Mad Max: Big Show clubs fastest ever World Cup century as Aussies demolish the Dutch in record-shattering shellacking

They do the simple stuff well – they were in a bit of hole last night but an attacking player like Phillips put his ego away when 4 down for 110 and ensured NZ got a score it could defend. SA and England could learn from NZ’s pragmatism.

Black Caps primed for India blockbuster after making Afghanistan pay for sloppy fielding

They just need to suck it up. When things don’t go their way Warner, Smith and others spit the dummy.

The ball was clipping the stumps according to the umpire and technology – get over it.

And likewise, with Smith’s wicket in the earlier game – up close it looked strange but when you saw the full ball from the bowler’s hand with the stump line on the pitch it did look like DRS got it right.

When NZ got robbed of the World Cup in the 2019, they did not carry on this much.

David Warner's bizarre call to have umpire's stats shown on big screen to help players make DRS decisions

It was out. When you looked at full ball with stump line it was out.

Clarke slams 'Wallabies'-esque Aussies' World Cup shocker, poor Cummins tactics in savage radio reality check

Australia’s issue is the lack of enthusiasm and the bowlers are possible a yard over the hill.
– Warner is past his best
– Marsh is a great player but has lean patches
– Smith is a good ODI player – not a great one, despite his test record.
– Marnus is solid – good but not great
– Maxwell – rarely performs when the team is in a hole
Bowlers… perhaps too old and everyone has seen them.

Time for some youth!

Twin DRS controversies leave Aussies fuming as latest collapse, fielding nightmare sum up huge loss to Proteas

When you see the full ball being bowled with the stumps line it does look like the correct decision.

Proven big game performer. No brainer. Even if NZ was morally cheated in the 2019 WC.

Why Stokes' decision to come back from ODI retirement lounge is a backward step for England

May not bode well for France.

We’ve all seen what follows an AB embarrassment.

'It stings, it hurts ... we got exposed': All Blacks alarm bells ringing after Springboks dish out worst EVER defeat

Bigger loss for England was no Wood in first two games and no Archer at all, followed by Leech. Australia were far superior on paper – and with a day’s more sun England had this won.

Seriously, maybe only Root and Stokes were making the Australian side before the series.

McCullum is a genius coach.

The Liebke Fifth Ashes Test report card: 'This series will be remembered as the 2-0 GOATwash'

Humiliation? Taking a team with less talent than Australia, India, England and SA to a WC final.

And with the Ashes – Australia are far stronger on paper and yet with another day of sun England would have won it.

I think McCullum knows what he is doing.

English bitter: 'Pathetic' Poms accused of dodging post-match beer in aftermath of tense Ashes series

If we’re breaking it down, Marnus has been dropped a hundred times on the way to scores – he’s been very very lucky the last while, albeit a good player.

And Williamson does not get the preparation of the big three. Short tours with little or no warm ups whereas the big teams get 5 match tours, weeks of prep and warm ups.

Also, overseas Williamson top scored in the WTC final in England in tough conditions, was player if the 2019 WC in England, top scored I’m 2018 IPL, 4th innings ton on rank turner in UAE to win Pakistan series.

At times he has had to effectively open. Ravel averaged 9 for 12 months or so.

And averaging 41 in Australia considering the last series was an all round nightmare is hardly poor. His ton in Brisbane followed by another I’m Perth a few years back was pure class.

Making a best XI of WTC 2021-23

He played well against England recently but strangely for the second time its not part of WTC.

Anyway, if we are looking deeply, Marnus was dropped multiple times on the way to a lot of hos runs – never seen such arsey luck.

And an average of 42 isn’t bad considering the terrible preparation NZ gets. India had a squad in Auatrslia a month out before the first game. NZ fly into Perth 6 days before day night Test with no preparation whatsoever.

Making a best XI of WTC 2021-23

Williamson who has averaged 72 at 3 since 2020 can’t get a game or even an honourable mention?

He is a far superior batsman to Labuschange
