Geelong’s premiership window may as well be welded shut – they won’t be winning another anytime soon.

Port have gone past them, Norf may do the same next year and Hawthorn & Sydney are already comfortably ahead. Geelong’s kids have wilted under pressure in the finals and they’re scarily reliant on Selwood, Johnson & Hawkins.

Nah I’d say its all but a certainty that the Handbaggers’ little run at the top is finito.

Why the future's bright at Kardinia Park

I guess with Port running out the game so well “sports science” will now be firmly back on the media agenda.

Gray and Wingard star as Power stun Dockers

Agreed Axle.

Clark is a dog for even considering playing for a different club after the way Melbourne supported him. He owes them.

I predict we’ll need to file a missing persons report to discover Gene’s whereabouts.

2014 AFL semi-finals: expert tips, predictions

Tipping Freo in this one, much more experienced and the home ground advantage should be too big a hill for Port to climb.

Freo also has the edge in motivation, they know its close to Pav’s last hurrah whereas Port will believe time is on their side.

Anyone expecting to hear from Gene this week? I’m not!

'Roos beat Cats by six points in AFL finals thriller

Ducker Selwood once again outed himself last night as the biggest sook in football.

I don’t think umpires rate the importance of hit outs highly enough for that to happen. If they did Sandi would already have a couple of Charlies.

Last ruckman I can recall winning it was Stynes and that had nothing to do with his tapwork, was all about his work around the ground.

Geelong facing swift finals exit

Stevie J is famous for being one of the most ordinary blokes in football. Absolutely in love with himself, selfish as they come, plays for free kicks as much as anyone, loves cheap-shotting his opponents behind play, doesn’t work hard defensively, and makes a habit of our refusing to pay his direct opponent the proper respect.

It pleases me greatly that this campaigner’s finals campaign is effectively over, I only wish the same could be said for his career.

Stevie J is an absolute model of the arrogance and disdain that has crept into Geelong’s culture in recent years.

What to say about Stevie J?

Haha I actually feel for the guy Ash, we all know how shitty it feels when your team’s had a great year but slams into a brick wall in September and all your expectations implode. It can easily feel like the bottom’s just fallen out of your world until you remind yourself that its only football, and there’s always next year!

But yeah, Gene made this bed for himself and so now he has to do the right thing and lie in it. If he ain’t gonna walk the walk he should never have talked the talk in the first place.

Geelong facing swift finals exit

Bad kicking didn’t cost Hawthorn the 2012 GF nor did it cost Freo last year’s. Both were beaten by better teams on the day.

Same thing happened to Geelong in 2008. People quickly forget that the entire season is tossed out the minute the ball is bounced in the GF, it all comes down to whoever performs better on the day.

I’ll say this though – it was blindingly obvious Freo was overawed in the first half of last year’s GF. The club had never in its entire history played in front of a crowd of more than 60k I think. A staggering stat really.

Fremantle's biggest enemy? Not Hawks or Swans, but time

Can we get your thoughts on the game Gene?

C’mon Gene we just want to know you’re okay mate. Don’t make me ring up that missing persons hotline. 🙂

2014 AFL finals series: Week 2 preview

As usual its all about Money for the AFL. Would they like to see Geelong’s biggest drawcard and most important player removed during a week when only two matches are being played? Would their paymasters, the TV networks?

Of course they rubbed out Franklin for a dubious hit on Malceski last year, but when Sydney stands to be the beneficiary as they were the week after then obviously that’s a whole different kettle of fish – the AFL would never dream of lifting a finger to help Norf on the other hand, if anything after Brayshaw & co. refused to relocate to the GC they’d much rather make things more difficult for the Kangaroos.

It’s also yet another instance of Geelong receiving favorable treatment at the MRP this year – precisely how many times has Stevie J got off scott free after being cited? Two or three times I think but its become hard to keep track. Such treatment goes nicely with the cushy run the Cats are guaranteed to receive from the match officials this week, as they do almost every week. Lindsay Thomas notwithstanding!

That's not a punch. That's a (jumper) punch

No way in a million years Port are about to win three cutthroat finals away from home against Freo, Hawthorn and Sydney.

They just beat a team that was dreadfully lucky to fall into the finals, who didn’t even show up until half time. Yeah I get the whole Port hype, but we need to put it into proper perspective.

2014 AFL Finals: Port can banish history and win the flag from fifth

Again we see a Geelong player escape MRP punishment.

I understand why Sydney is so loved by the AFL but Geelong? Remains a mystery.

Geelong's Hawkins free to play with no charges laid

I’m not sold on Port just yet.

They’ve looked great at home all year, away from home they’re half as intimidating.

There are also big question marks over Port’s ability to play that run & carry dependent style of theirs against quality opposition for another 3 weeks in a row, frankly I don’t think they have the fitness for it or the mental toughness either. Still a very young team and I expect Freo will give them a VERY different challenge compared with Richmond who rolled over from the first bounce and put them under no pressure whatsoever.

What we learnt from week one of the 2014 AFL finals series

I think its a myth that teams must be forced to undergo a complete rebuild after being in contention for several years, particularly now that we have Free Agency.

If anything, Geelong’s team on the weekend bore about as much resemblance to their 2007 side as the current Hawthorn team does to their 2008 team or the Swans do to their 2005 side. To stay in the top for any significant period of time a club must rebuild on the fly, which is precisely why Collingwood has slid down the ladder so quickly since 2011 – they never found capable replacements for Leigh Brown and Darren Jolly among others.

Geelong, Freo, Hawthorn and Sydney have by far the four oldest lists in the competition. I can’t see any of these clubs competing for flags beyond the next 3 or 4 years, 5 years max. Geelong has probably managed to get more games into their young kids than the other three, which would suggest they will rise back up the ladder a year or two earlier than the others after they inevitably slide – which they will starting next season.
I realize that contradicts what I said earlier about teams rebuilding on the fly, but while its one thing to replace 5 or 10 best 22 players over the course of 4 or 5 seasons, eventually the sheer number of retirees and older players losing touch each year will catch up with you.

Maybe its a moot point for these four clubs since once GC & GWS mature I don’t see anyone else getting near them them for a number of years.

2014 AFL Finals: History and form suggest a Sydney versus Hawks final

Can we get your thoughts on the weekend’s games Gene, or are you still curled up in the foetal position?

2014 AFL Finals: History and form suggest a Sydney versus Hawks final

Nor do you Casper, but unlike yourself I don’t support a team that’s about to have most of its best players slapped with a two year ban.

Enjoy next season chum, can’t wait to see who Essendon picks up from the VFL, SANFL & WAFL!

Bomber Thompson rides into the sunset

Gee you’re a trifle keen to point out why Richmond’s win over your beloved Swans shouldnt’ve been taken seriously aren’t you Peter?

Tigers Roaring run not done yet

Just wanted to be the first to say I called it.

Richmond’s first quarter was pretty much what I was expecting.

For starters, please stop labeling it the “supplements saga” and call it by what it really is- the Banned Drugs Saga. I’ve had quite enough media spin from Essendon already and I don’t need to swallow more of it here, thankyou.

You say Thompson has taken his share of the responsibility – that is flat out bullshit. To this day he has refused to pay the fine the AFL issued him with. He has never once fronted the media and said he was sorry for the part he played in allowing these young men to be used as guinea pigs. He has issued countless lies to the press like when defended the potential cancer-causing side effects of the program by claiming “many of the drugs we gave them are used to treat cancer patients!”

If anything he’s avoided taking responsibility almost as fiercely as Hird has.

Bomber Thompson rides into the sunset

Well said.

Bomber Thompson is every bit as tainted as Hird and had the AFL been concerned about more than just its bottom line both would’ve been banned from coaching for life.

Bomber Thompson rides into the sunset

That roar will become a yelp of pain this arvo mate. I’m afraid your boys are gonna get smashed by Port.
