Sure it would be nice to see but it’s evident in modern football that applying constant pressure wins more games than always having your structure set up perfectly.

Modern AFL players are harder, better, faster, stronger

Great article. Good stats, it makes a lot of sense actually. You didn’t actually compare the games in which the Hawks DID play quality sides with/without Buddy though.

Are Hawthorn really better without Buddy?

Great article, I mean comment. I’m very impressed by your unbiased analysis! I can’t decide whether we’re a better side with or without Buddy but I’d love him back just for the excitement he brings to the matches. I think he’s easily the best forward in the competition but somehow we’ve seemed to be just as potent up forward without him. Sad to see him go but I can’t help but cheer him on to kick a bag of goals each week. It’s going to be difficult for me if he plays well this week! 😛

I hate you guys too 🙂 I thought you were going to drop off this year DAMNIT!

Good argument there, as a Hawthorn supporter I’m hoping it was more to do with us lacking a big man in defense to stop Hawkins. We’ll find out when we play them again later this season.

He wasn’t rated so highly back then and so got less attention. Many coaches have admitted in recent years that they practically assign 1.5 players to him per match. I think he’s stronger, smarter and more accurate now than he was in 2008. Clearly he’s still not the MOST consistent player, but I think he’s more consistent than people think. It must be difficult to be consistent as a key position player when the opposition are so aware of his talent.

Yeah, all we can ever really say is the Hawks haven’t suffered from him leaving. I think they’d realised their ‘Buddy-centric’ style and made adjustments to fix that in 2013. It’s hard to make a case that they would be better off without such a great player and I wish he was still playing for Hawks!
