It is an excellent new defensive strategy brought in by Popovic. Instead of moving the goal posts to make it difficult for opponents to score he is utilising “smoke and mirrors” to bamboozle the opposition attackers and to create opportunities for our strikers 😉

Sydney beat Wanderers in heated derby

To borrow Tony Popovic’s words, “we totally dominated the match!” . Errr…but just not on the scoreboard! 😉

Good to see a tight finals race! I was surprised with Victory’s performance at home and the Phoenix played smart football to be hanging in there to claim a victory over Victory! Well done.

Phoenix stun Victory at home

To get things into perspective, the four goals scored by Sydney FC were all due to errors by the Wanderers defence and not brilliant attacking football from the sky blues. Great debut from Kerem Bulut and his second goal, to use Ned Zelic’s words, was “individual brilliance”. Basically, the Wanderers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Whilst it was a great entertainment spectacle, really no side can claim bragging rights over that match.

Castelen is very definitely a talented player and so too is Kerem Bulut. What is disturbing for me is that the Wanderers defence, which is normally solid, was severely disappointing in this game. Even the usually reliable Covic had butter fingers. Irrespective of who plays where, they really need to fix these issues. Would not hurt to give Covic a rest and play Dean Bouzanis for a few more games.

That is the beauty of football. You can argue this one both ways. The Wanderers were indeed very poor at the back to be conceding 3 goals to Sydney straight up is, bluntly, ridiculous! To their credit, they came back and levelled -brilliant! Then Arnie’s tactical smarts in making the Atonis change and getting the result he wanted-genius!

14K average figure is promising but again “skewed” with factoring in the derbies. The WSW-Sydney FC match yesterday attracted 19K+ and an even bigger crowd attended the last Sydney derby at Alliance. The other “real” problem that lurks in the back of sponsors minds (and tv programmers and decision makers) is the hooligan element that is still present in A League. Most sponsors want as clean a sport as they can get ( I hear you laughing at mention of NRL) or a popular sport that is considered mainstream. The match showed the ground engulfed in the smoke of flares being thrown by both sets of supporters onto the field. Only broadcasters that understand the game (SBS) or the subscription services (Foxtel) would be willing to screen something like that.

Football is ready for free-to-air coverage

The people that believe the “world is still flat” are the tv programmers and decision makers and NOT those commenters who are realists and recognise the commercial realities of FTA! To pick up on one of the examples mentioned -motor racing. I had tuned in Channel Ten’s V8 supercar coverage of the Clipsal 500. Motor racing, due to its format, absolutely lends itself to being screened on FTA- the advertising in this case was done in blocks or when “safety car” was deployed on the track so sponsors get plenty of airtime. The other issue is, as other commenters suggest, that a real event or drawcard is required for FTA to be interested (such as the Liverpool tour or the recent Asian Cup). Believe it (or not) these are the commercial realities for others to decide!

Yes indeed! What a spectacle for the fans. Shame someone had to lose this game. Was it brilliant attack or poor defending or a combination of both that led to the goalfest? Ante’s own goal was just plain embarrassing -replays showing he had two attempts to put it into the back of his own net. Defensive errors from the Wanderers early allowed Sydney to romp away to 3-0 and to their credit the Wanderers, either stung by their own incompetence or Popovic’s words, came out and levelled the scoreline at 3-3. Great debut from Kerem Bulut (probably now known as “Bullet” after his second sublime effort) which will go a long way in rectifying the Wanderers toothless attack. Unfortunately someone had to lose this one -no shame in that!

Bondy. I think our crowd averages (with the derbies included) “skews” to around the 10K + mark. We need to lift it to around at least the 15K mark, if possible, to start getting the networks interested in looking at the product. The derbies are ready to go now and need someone with the format that supports it to take it on.

Bresciano has chosen his time to retire from international football at the right moment-after a triumphant Asian Cup win on home soil! Why should he “risk” tarnishing an already illustrious career representing his country for just one more friendly against Germany just to please the “one more crowd -just one more, it cannot do any harm” And he is correct in realising that there are limitations as one gets older-perhaps he should have a talk with Archie Thompson before he considers the A League. Personally, I believe he has done enough as a player in a stellar career-there is no need to “flog it to death” so to speak.

The next step for him, IMO, is to consider a role in coaching, management or other but still be involved in our beautiful game.

Marco Bresciano should steer clear of the A-League

Midfielder.

An AFL crew member I am not. A realist is what I am. Whilst optimism is a good thing, the commercial reality is that our domestic competition is not mainstream enough just yet (we need to start looking at bigger crowd averages- 20-30K for the HAL with the exception of the derbies) and our game is non conducive to the traditional commercial advertising that warrants putting it on the main channels.
So what does that leave us? the possibility of perhaps screening derbies on One HD, Go or 7 Mate-a secondary channel. Is this what is called mainstream commercial TV? I think not. this is backwoods stuff. The ABC is probably the only other (at this point in time) channel that has the format (hardly any advertising at all) to do the game justice and I, for one, would love to see FFA Cup games live or the Sydney derbies live on Aunty (with its large regional presence). This will have the effect of growing the game further so that eventually the likes of One HD can step in with some coverage. Begs the question: Is One HD brave enough to run with it now?

You have to learn to crawl before you can walk! 🙂

After just one win, the articles keep coming about the Wanderers. Their A League season is shot but if there is one game I would love to see them win it has to be this one-the Sydney Derby! It is at Pirtek, a few players are rested so, hopefully, a better result than the last 1-1 outing at home is on the cards Saturday. I keep thinking of the saying ” one swallow does not make a summer” but let the fans at least have two swallows as a highlight for this dismal A League season.

Wanderers aiming for an upset in Sydney derby

Kashima Antler”s pedigree should not be devalued (multiple J League and Superleague title holders) and I believe the Wanderers style suits the ACL more than the A League, with the midfield (Takahagi) playing deep and able to service the attack more effectively.

Wanderers open ACL defence with 3-1 win

Ah Yes…..the WIN stadium game. A pretty decent crowd of 11K+ turned up to watch that rather lacklustre affair between Sydney FC and Newcastle. Imagine what sort of crowd they would get if a quality side like their own Wolves had played that day. 😛

Has Popovic finally found a solution for the Wanderers?

Mainstream FTA is still years away. Outside of the Socceroos games and the big blockbusters (liverpool etc). As other commenters have noted, there is not enough “space” to squeeze the sixty zillion ads that create the revenue in the first place and, secondly, the broad appeal of our sport (big games excluded) is simply not enough to get them interested.

Best outcome currently that I can see, which is realistic, is that the ABC joins in with coverage of FFA Cup games. Look at the crowd averages at the games-if anything we are on par to equal or slightly better last years average HAL attendances. Maybe the derbies can also get screened on FTA but as far anything else goes-the same duopoly will continue.

Football is ready for free-to-air coverage

Probably still too early in the growth stage to “throw the proverbial chestnut” of mainstream free to air TV. Fox and SBS have a good combination happening, however after the success of the Asian Cup on home soil, the ABC may step in to provide coverage of some selected games (either FFA Cup or other on delay) without upsetting the existing duopoly too much. Would be a good thing too, provide that natural progression to a possible mainstream channel later on whilst offering football fans an alternative. It is well known that the ABC were very happy with the ratings for the matches featuring Australia that were screened.

Football is ready for free-to-air coverage

Football is a funny thing! I fully expected the reverse as far as ACL results go. The Roar lost and the Wanderers won!

Has Popovic finally found a solution for the Wanderers?

The A League is more physically demanding and faster than the ACL. One reason for the difference. Second reason, as Tony points out was the midfield combination finally offering cohesion and service to the attack -good to see Bridgey finally placed in a role that suits him-up the front! Defence has always been key to the Wanderers style but midfield, as many commenters have pointed out, is CRUCIAL to getting service to the likes of Juric, Bridge and others so they can find the back of the net. With the Japanese player feeling right at home (so to speak) in the ACL, the difference is all there to see! 🙂

Has Popovic finally found a solution for the Wanderers?

Great win away by the Wanderers and what a way to get the ACL campaign underway. Good to see Bridgey get on the scoresheet too-has been missing in action in the A League debacle. Change of scenery, fresh players and a new campaign does wonders 😉

Wanderers open ACL defence with 3-1 win

Popovic has stated that their main focus is on the ACL “above all else”. Hey and guess what? First match against Kashima Antlers (multiple Japanese champions) wallah! A win away (3-1) with admittedly a gimme in there of an own goal but we will take it! Well done boys! 🙂

A-League slump won't fuel Wanderers in ACL

Now then…..this begs the question. Have the Wanderers been “foxing” about the A League and leaving their real focus for the ACL? A 3-1 scoreline against Kashima Antlers (no easybeats by any means) is almost a stunning form reversal compared to their A League form. Lucky this is not the racing industry-the stewards will be all over them like a cheap suit 😉

Asia could prove the foray for Wanderers revival

Bridgey gets two -well done son! 🙂

Asia could prove the foray for Wanderers revival

Mitchell had the crystal ball out and must have known what was coming. A terrific win away against Kashima Antlers (3-1). Great win boys and Bridgey gets a goal (formerly MIA now on the scoresheet!). In my last post, I said that football can be a funny thing -maybe just maybe. I am stoked for them -this should pick them up off the floor. 🙂

Asia could prove the foray for Wanderers revival

Just a postscript to this. John Tsatsimas has already stated that Popovic’s tenure at the Wanderers is safe for now.So expect more of the same for the time being.
