Quade Cooper and the The Graeme Hick Effect

Sometimes there are sportsmen, highly talented sportsmen, that shine at regional or county level. Where they can be a dominant influence on the performance of their team. Everything points to these players also being able to make the step up to Test Match level ….. until they get there. Less time, more intense, the impact of your errors is emphasised and the expectation that your in-game influence has impact is heightened. It happened to Graeme Hick …. the greatest “potential” batsman in the world and most promising prospect for English Cricket for decades in the 90s. But when he got to Test Match level Graeme Hick was a chump. He could not make the step up. So too Quade Cooper, a wonderful, influential and entertaining provincial rugby player who just does not have it at Test Match level.

All Blacks smash Wallabies, secure Bledisloe Cup

Phipps said overnight …. everybody deserves a second chance. I could not agree more. It’s the third and fourth and fifth chance that needs more discretion. As it is with KB. I like the hypothesis that KB’s contract will not be renewed and dismissal would cause complications.

For me he has once again failed the character test. Text #1 was enough for that and even KB supports cannot deny that he was out of line in sending it. If the notice to KB at the last incident was one more strike and you’re out then he’s out.

It’s a pretty simple equation for a guy with form.

ARU should restore integrity and not renew Beale’s contract

It is valid to question the value of DP’s interview in the Australian but you must also be willing to do the same for KB’s interviews in other media. I can’t recall KB or his spruikers reporting all of the information in his interviews …. that KB had send message #1 on more than one occasion, or that he had actually lied to DP in his tearful, heartfelt apology.

DP’s interview with The Australian was indeed providing a single and limited perspective, but so too have many of the stories interviewing KB. If it’s a fair and truthful account of all of the facts you are seeking then I don’t think either side is providing that from their interviews with media, nor is the ARU.

ARU should restore integrity and not renew Beale’s contract

Too right Kuruki. Somehow Beale has been painted as the victim, it’s quite remarkable. This guy, fresh from a suspension and near expulsion from the game re-enters the team fold in June and immediately gets up to mischief again. The complete absence of transparency in the reporting and the ARU hearing tells us the one thing we need to know … there is information that they do not want us to know.

I’m not interested that DP forgave Beale for text #1. That he sent it is the problem, not how it was received. And when he sent it …. fresh upon returning to the team. Amazing disrespect for being given another chance to redeem himself, amazing disrespect for a fellow member of team Wallaby.

As for Text #2, it is fanciful for the publicto now be asked to believe that that text did not come from Beale or some other staff member in the Wallaby camp. It’s plain to anybody with an ounce of technical knowledge on mobile devices that this is escape by technicality. Let’s change the language and ask “KB, were you involved in any way with the second text message rather than did you send it ?” If you want the answer you will get it. If you don’t want the answer then you can leave the side door open for technical escape.

Interestingly, and disappointingly for me, the current Beale “vindication” seems adequate for many fans to forget and move on. Perhaps as Wallaby supporters we are actually getting the team that we deserve if this is the standard we are prepared to accept.

For me, it does not matter how well KBe can play rugby, it matters how well KB can represent his country and the Wallaby tradition. Once again he has failed the character test. Sooner or later we have to apply standards of behaviour that we expect from our representatives.
