Apart from having Kerevi back in the line-up, Hooper’s form as a seven and a captain have been the most satisfying part of the back to back wins over the Boks. His captaincy seems to be an accurate reflection of whoever happens to be coaching him at the time. All the chatter about his (lack of) ability in this department has seemed to die down.

The Wrap: Wallabies rocket ahead while the Springboks are lost in space

The longer the season goes, the worse To’omua looks.

Super Rugby AU Round 10 teams: Force get major boost for must-win match

Before Hegarty got the start at 15 in the last two games, Thorn/McKay had JOC playing as a FB in defense, which reduced Jock’s ability to show off his broken-play running from the back. This approach is more suited to having Hegarty at FB, in which case Jock should be on the bench with specialist wingers to start. If Jock starts, let him play as a traditional fullback.

Woops – missed that. Thanks all for the heads up.

Was the first thing I noticed too!
Jock on the outer at the Reds too, game plan doesn’t suit his skill set.

Thanks KCOL and Jez for the insight.

Bring Ned Hanigan home (and four other things NSW must do)

As a die hard Reds fan, I can honestly say I want all our Super AU teams to be the best they can be, for the good of the comp, the wallabies and the Australian game in general. That’s why I don’t want Cheika anywhere near the Tahs organisation. This notion that he should now be treated as an elder statesman of Oz rugby because of 2014 Tahs and 2015 Wallabies is ridiculous. He ingrained a whining, insular culture to the Wallabies and a (lack of) game plan that I think hindered the development of many of our players. His appearances on Stan have me reaching for the mute button, or switching over the NRL at half time. Please keep him as far away from the Tahs, our TVs and our sport as possible. Rant over.

Cheika watches brave Tahs lose to Brumbies

I am a fan of the new 20 min red card rule in rugby, which allows a subsitute after 20 mins, but the original offender stays off the pitch.

Should rugby league have an injury replacement rule?

The NRL has an opportunity and an obligation to get serious on head injuries, relating to both prevention and management. I won’t go too far into the prevention side, but initial contact to the head, with force, needs time in the bin, no exceptions. On the injury front, I am advocating for “head injury reserves” beyond the four man bench (number of HI reserves to be whatever is manageable within the playing roster on gameday). Only stipulation being that if a player is substituted by a HI reserve, then the substituted player cannot play the following week either. Ideally, the introduction of the first rule will negate/reduce the need for the second one.

Should rugby league have an injury replacement rule?

Agree, JD. There is a tendency for us to rush guys up the hierarchy. I am content with the current Reds coaching team, but they don’t have any silverware yet. Just as the depth and capability of the player pool is starting to regenerate, so too must the coaching pool. We need players, coaches and management to be successful. The shambolic last decade has probably been due to administrative and coaching problems moreso than lack of players. Reds, Tahs, and Rebels have all suffered greatly due to poor coaching at various points. Good coaches shouldn’t be rushed into the Wallabies setup, they should hang around to make our Super teams better. I’d love to see Thorn win at least a couple of SRAU trophies and (dare I say it) a trans tasman trophy as well.

Is Brad Thorn our next Wallabies coach?

Agree, ethan. I think the expert analysis will go to Turinui first, with Mehrtens the backup. Turinui is guilty of using a lot of w@nk words in his delivery, but his knowledge is top notch, especially given his recent SR coaching experience.
I’m a huge fan of Maloney, his work at the Japan RWC was top notch. Shame we don’t get his partner in crime from that tourney, Melodie Robinson, by far the best female commentator out there.

Nine and Stan's rugby commentary team has finally been confirmed

I’d say Lolesio is more versatile. He played 12 for the U20s, and I’d argue is already shaping as a key player for next RWC. He needs more opportunities.

James O'Connor back at 10 for Wallabies' final Test of the year

OOP, Ben Kimber does a great job at hosting a home-made podcast, but he is miles away from being a professional commentator imo. I’ve said it before, best commentary team at last year’s RWC was Maloney, Melodie Robinson and Mehrtens. Maloney showed in that comp he doesn’t need comedy to make a good a call (although tbh, I don’t mind it). For me Gregan, Mitchell, Hoiles, Kearns, Clarke, Marto, Horan can all stay away (in that order). I refuse to listen to Channel 10 because I have a Chris-Latham sized grudge against Matt Burke. Kimber’s Rugby Ruckus mate, Morgan Turinui, like Kafer, is an excellent analyst, but for some reason they too often come off as know-it-alls. I reckon Fitzsimon will get a gig as the Phil-Gould-esque pre-match hype merchant – delivering a soliloquy from centre field while the camera zooms and pans around him.

How about a new commentary team to go with a new TV deal?

I think after the crossover portion, the top 3 NZ teams will generally bubble to the top and the AU teams will go in the opposite direction. An AU team will need to dominate the domestic comp to set up a run at a top 2 finish. If the Aussie teams struggle to win away from home again in 2021 then this will prove difficult.

Trans-Tasman Super Rugby competition confirmed for 2021

While I am no fan of Clyne, it’s amazing how little leverage RA had prior to COVID, on his watch. Hence rolling over to cull the Force. All the NZ Rugby rhetoric over the past couple of months prior to these announcements was indicate of a pre-COVID position of strength. Now that reality has sunk in, both unions are getting on with pragmatic solutions. I don’t really care how we got here – but I’m liking where things have landed.

Trans-Tasman Super Rugby competition confirmed for 2021

Agreed. I think it’s a great format, what will be weird though is the domestic finals before the trans Tasman portion kicks off. Actually, are NZ planning a domestic SR final in 2021? They didn’t have one this year, did they?

Ok found it:
https://www.rugby.com.au/news/2020/11/12/2021-set-for-thrilling-trans-tasman-crossover

“The Final will be played between the top two placed teams on the combined competition table with the team who finished first to host the decider.”

Trans-Tasman Super Rugby competition confirmed for 2021

I’m assuming the points from the domestic comps carryover to the trans Tasman portion. Good news for the Oz teams. Great news overall for Oz and NZ. Leaves the Jaguares in limbo.

There was a decent period where MK was throwing lots of speculators, one handed offloads that bobbled out and ended in turnovers. At the same time he eliminated that from his game, he started sniffing around the rucks for pick n go opportunities. Throw in the fact that his effort has always been best on field and it’s easy to see how he went from raw potential to superstar in one season.

"We want him to earn the right to play": Dave Rennie speaks about Vunivalu's Wallabies call-up

I read that Vunivalu was recruited to the storm via Rugby in Auckland. Did MK play rugby growing up? I’m hoping for a quicker transition. The other thing you notice about Vunivalu is that he is massive, I always thought of him as lean and wiry, but he is a beast. With Paisami going to new heights this year and a fit Petaia, Reds backline next year could be scary good. Wonder who will miss out?

"We want him to earn the right to play": Dave Rennie speaks about Vunivalu's Wallabies call-up

I think that the QLDers weakness on the edge last night gave the NSW middles the edge! Sami and Capewell as a rookie pairing, with one playing out of position, were always going to struggle, and with Hunt defending inside them, things were unsurprisingly really bad on the left. (Capewell’s Game 1 was an anomaly, something needs to change for Game 3). The right hand edge really struggled with kick returns, especially after Trbojovic cut Coates in half. The early-in-the-set kicking game from Cleary and Walker exacerbated these problems for both edges. It meant the QLD middles did a lot of defending on their line, and faced a wall of well-set defense when otherwise trying to build momentum, which they managed in Game 1. QLD hung on quite well in the last 30 despite all of the above. QLD missed Munster way more than Brimson. Munster is crucial for QLD to have a chance. Gutherson and Wighton still underwhelming in a dominant side.

Six talking points from State of Origin 2

Would love to know the purpose of the SotU. I hope there is more to it than broadcast content, but I can’t see how it could be. If we are talking about filling in a gap in the calendar between SRAU and test matches then it has to be NRC. Gives players outside of the Wallaby squad real games to address their “work ons”, players returning from injury to do so in a managed way, plus gives up and comer SR prospects exposure to a level above club footy. Introducing a SotU reduces the size of the player group, while potentially introducing a new set of combinations, coaching philosophies, structures etc for a small number of games that won’t necessarily benefit the national team. This phenomena actually exists in League, but it’s not a problem, because the Kangaroos are arguably less important than SOO, given the relative weakness of the global game compared to Union. NRC games as curtain raisers to Test Matches on free to air would be nice. And find a way to promote players club’s while doing so – on the team lists, colour of their socks, in commentary etc.

State of Union is a disastrous idea

His distribution is not too shabby either, and Rennie has expectations for his kicking game. Will be interesting to see what happens at the Reds next year with Petaia fit. Stewart had a strong season.

The 2020 Bledisloe Cup analysed – Part 1: The Wallabies

A lot of love for Swinton’s 30 mins on the pitch. Would be interesting to see what his score would have been if we had lost. Simmons score seems based on recent reputation not actual performance. Our bench finished strongly, without much recognition (Daugunu not on long enough to be evaluated) – Lolesio was really good I thought, threatened when he ran, but retained possession well. Good debut from Bell too.

Agree on the Super W. Double header on Saturday night would be nice.
