Did you see Philip Sami’s try on the weekend??
How the bunker deemed that a try is beyond me.
That goes in as exhibit A for getting rid of it!

NRL Round 9 Talking Points: Abuse of Kasey Badger is way out of line - on and off the field

I wholeheartedly agree DP, except for your point about the Captains Challenge. It’s there to overturn the howler, and if a captain decides to use it on a contentious call and loses it, it’s just further proof that the ref’s are doing a good job, and the players need to shut up and accept the call.

I still remember receiving tough, wrong calls when playing…but the ref was God and you just had to roll with it.
I think the NRL has made life tough for refs by oovercomplicating the rules and their application, and should strip back a lot of the game management BS we see each week.
Refer to players by their number.
Don’t warn them they’re offside, just wait for them to involve themselves and blow the whistle.
Players show dissent – blow the whistle; if they do it some more, march them 10m and blow the whistle again. Any more and they’re in the bin.
There’s little need to explain calls to players. I love when the refs challenge the captain to challenge their call. Ashley Klein is far from my fave referee, but I loved how he simply stated to Tedesco on Friday night “I’m not going to discuss it” (the call). Unfortunately he repeated that about 5 times, instead of marching Teddy 10m and blowing the whistle again.

Partly because Siebold told him he was too small to be a half, and had to transition into a fullback

Well said Nat.

For all the negative tall about Latrell Mitchell, he is a freak at finding the tryline. Please don’t pick him Madge

NRL News: Cheika hires agent to sound out Souths, Gus cops huge fine after 'our game is stupid' rant

He actually went on a very similar rant 6 years ago and was never fined.
No wonder he says it’s a funny game!!

I thought it was Mat Rogers, at the Titans, who started it, when playing the Storm, to nullify Billy Slater’s lock returns…

NRL News: Cheika hires agent to sound out Souths, Gus cops huge fine after 'our game is stupid' rant

Exactly.
It’s hilarious that Gus has historically gotten away with saying outrageous things, and this time he’s actually made a correct point, especially about knocking on over the line, and he cops a $20k fine!
Gold
I think this situation is so, so funny

'Success hasn't been forthcoming': Souths sack Demetriou after fractured board eventually decides time's up

Agreed.
Way too conservative.
Cam Green is a super talent, but has done little in the T20 format, and Wade is way past his prime.
Hell, Ricky Ponting as coach of the Dehli Capitals dropped David Warner in favour of JFM…so maybe he should be selected in front of Warner too…
Jake Fraser-Beserk should be picked in the 15-man squad.

'Big achievement': Jason Gillespie secures major appointment as Pakistan Test coach

Are you being intentionally daft?
Read the article again. For the past few years Cronulla have been a side that beats all the bottom half teams, but struggles when playing the top teams.
Hence their record against top 8 teams is so poor.
The article’s thrust was they need to win big matches against the big teams to lose the perception that they’re flat track bullies.
Who are the big teams this year??
I nominated the most obvious 3 – as we’re only 8 weeks in and the comp is tight, I limited myself to the 3 that I’m certain about.
I’m uncertain about the rest of them. I genuinely don’t know if the Sea Eagles are a top 4-6 side, nor the Roosters, nor the Dolphins.
So yes – at this stage of the comp – IMO the Sharks have proven nothing to change the flat track bully perception, and they won’t until they start beating, or at least challenging, the Panthers, Broncos & Storm.

As the article states:
“…they enter the toughest part of their season with the Storm, Roosters, Panthers, Eels, Broncos and Dolphins on the slate before their Round 16 bye.
If the Sharks emerge from their mid-season stretch still in the top four, then they deserve to be considered legit trophy contenders come playoff time.”

Let’s talk again in 8 weeks

Why all the pieces now Fitz for Sharks to shed flat-track bullies reputation and show they’re the real deal

“Prove themselves as what?”

A top team. A contender for the premiership.
Pretty sure I established that in my last comment.

Why all the pieces now Fitz for Sharks to shed flat-track bullies reputation and show they’re the real deal

Yes and no.
South’s were generally considered a strong team before the season started. 8 rounds later, the results show the general consensus was wrong.
The general consensus about the Raiders was they’d drop out of the 8 this year.
The general consensus was the Warriors were a threat this year, but they’ve been beaten by the Dragons and the Titans, so maybe not.

Cronulla are yet to truly prove themselves. They need to seriously threaten, or better yet beat, the likes of Penrith, the Broncos, and the Storm to overcome the perception they’re not a top 4 team. These 3 teams are the current benchmarks of the comp, with almost everyone believing they’ll be top 4 at season end.

No one is taking wickets this IPL.
It’s been a massive run-fest, with the 4 highest IPL team totals ever have come this tournament

Australia's brightest rising T20 star JMK may have to wait his turn for World Cup selection, despite already setting IPL alight

I understand your sentiment, but I think Australia needs the point of difference that JFM brings.
We don’t need Wade, who is way past his prime. JFM to take his #6 slot
Cam Green is a super talent, but is a long way from our best T20 team – Stoinis is better suited, although this should be his final tournament for Aus.
And X.Bartlett is lesser a bowler than S.Johnson

Maroons Origin predicted team: Slater forced to make changes after injuries sideline some certain selections

Why does the author resort to hyperbole? Especially when it is completely unnecessary??
The knock on the Sharks has been that they beat up the little guys, but can’t beat top 4 opposition.
Instead of simply stating that they had a day out by thrashing the Cows, whose dismal efforts mean this question is still unanswered, he writes that the Sharks “obliterated those doubts”.
Sorry, but those doubts still remain. And will continue to until they start actually beating top 4 opposition. Something the Cows clearly are not, at this point.

The Roar's NRL expert tips and predictions, Round 1: Can Storm continue hot streak, will Dragons fire, more upsets to come?

My doubts about the Warriors are primarily regarding Shaun Johnson. He had a blinder of a year in 2023. If he goes down, I don’t see enough skill and poise in the remaining halves to taken them into the finals.
Secondarily, the same goes for Wayde Egan @ hooker. Great last year, but if he goes down, who will step up?

Why Warriors are no certainty to make finals again despite overwhelming wave of optimism

100% Dutski

The numbers of the fast bowling trio cited in the article show why they should stay. They’ve performed brilliantly.
Averages of 22 – 29 are pretty damn good, and for all them to be striking at under 50 is elite.

After reading this article, I’m confused as to the purpose of it. Doesn’t really say much, nor make a compelling argument. It’s like picking the NSW state of origin team now, before the season has even started.

When Starc, Cummins and Hazelwood’s form drops, then we can talk about replacements.

Why Starc should be first to make way if selectors opt to regenerate ageing Test team’s legendary bowling attack

I think Sean Abbott will be quietly hoping that Johnson stinks it up.

Abbott hasn’t made the most of his limited opportunities, IMO, and if Johnson bowls well in the next few matches for Aus, I’d have him ahead in the pecking
