ODI’s are a different beast to Test matches.
Not long ago we selected a great ODI opener to open in tests, when all his FC success had come at #5…and it didn’t end well.
His failure was expected and unsurprising.
Aaron Finch is a cautionary tale for giving ODI’s and test matches equivalence.

The Harris-Bancroft-Renshaw battle is underwhelming…but credit where it is due.
Bancroft has easily outshone the other 2 in the past 2 years.
I’m biased towards Renshaw, and think he’s the best long term option, but he just hasn’t done enough the past 12 months.
Harris is a dud.
For me, Bancroft to take Warner’s place, and Green to wait until a middle order position opens up. It won’t take long.
MMarsh will injure himself, or fall back into old habits of getting out cheap. Or someone else will get injured or retire.

Their most settled positions are 2nd row (Kikau & Preston) and Burton at 5/8th. So why buy Salmon who almost exclusively plays those positions?
Similarly, why buy want-to-be-fullbacks Connor Tracey and Blake Taafe if you’ve broken the bank to buy Crichton at FB??

Tim, Hamas does not equal or represent all Palestinians, in the same way that the ALP does not equal nor represent the views of all Australians.
You seem to have no compunction with the death of innocent – yes, innocent – Palestinian children in the efforts to overcome Hamas. I do. Usman Kwahaja does too. That’s not difficult to understand.
What Hamas did on Oct 7th was atrocious, and if Israel decide to wipe them out because of those actions, Hamas can’t complain.
But Israel has used broad-stroke tactics that have killed many thousands of innocent children. That’s the issue at the heart of Kwahaja’s protest – dead innocent kids.
I fail to see how that’s divisive.
But good luck to you if that’s how you see it.

Why have you “cherry-picked” the last 6 years? Oh, because it drops his first 21 tests where he averaged less than 22??
Go back and read the article. Prior to his recall for the 3rd Ashes test at Leeds this year, it doesn’t matter which block of tests you look at, MMarsh had a very poor batting record. He had a good run of 5 tests in late 2017 – early 2018 where he scored 430 runs @ 61.6, but even including that good run, after 32 tests he averaged 25.2. That’s simply not good enough, in any team or era.
Your reference to Steve Waugh doesn’t stack up either. Waugh’s average was above 25 by his 11th test match, and after 32 matches was above 40. So there’s very little to compare between the two, batting wise.
On top of that, Waugh’s bowling was a little better than Marsh’s too.
I agree with the article- Marsh is doing great right now, but his record prior to his recall in Leeds was crapola, and Marsh’s fanboys shouldn’t gloss over that and pretend it’s not true

Of course not.
I don’t think anyone is saying that Marsh being booed by Aus crowds was okay.
The thrust of the article is simple. MMarsh’s record, prior to his recall in Leeds earlier this year is very, very ordinary.
We’re all enjoying this renaissance, but prior to the Ashes this year, his record in tests just wasn’t much chop

I think it’s you who is wrong Johnno.
MMarsh was given an extended run in which he failed to score sufficient runs, long before he was booed or mistreated.

Nailed it TWAS.
They got more opportunities than players with superior records got.
Not every time they were selected, but some times.
I was in favour of MMarsh being given an extended run in the team to find form, feel he fitted etc., but after 21 matches he averaged less than 22. Starc averages 21.
At this point, after an extended run, I felt his papers should have been marked. At the very least, he needed to go back to Shield cricket and dominate for 2 years before being considered again. But he was given more opportunities.
Thankfully, he made a fist of the next one, scoring centuries in the 17-18 Ashes, and then making 90-something in the first test against SA in March 18.
But again, it proved short-lived. In his next 6 tests, he scored less than 120 (total!) runs.
For most players, that means no more selection, but he was offered more opportunities. I still don’t understand how he was selected for the last Ashes tour…99% of players would never have been selected again. Michael Bevan got 18 matches for Australia and averaged 29 with the bat and 40 with the ball…slightly better figures than MMarsh, yet never got a recall despite averaging over 57 in FC cricket.
I watched that century MMarsh scored in Leeds, and loved it. Cheered him on all the way. But he was very, very lucky to have that opportunity in the first place

The Hamas killings of approximately 1500 Israelis was heavily covered by the media and roundly condemned.
I heard not one voice in the coverage that did not condemn the actions by Hamas on Oct 7th.
Since then, more than 20,000 Palestinians have been killed by the IDF, and while there has been media coverage of these deaths, there is less than unanimous condemnation of the IDF. Some media cheer leaders say that the 20,000 Palestinian deaths is a necessary evil, and lend their voice if support to Israel’s actions.
Uzzie is responding to this situation. The Australian media and their talking heads, as well as federal politicians, have not given equivalence to the lives of Palestinians and Israelis. One is favoured / granted higher importance.
Saying All Lives Matter is only divisive for people who don’t believe that all lives matter…

But even if he hadn’t, why does that matter?

Yes. I remember him winning a test match off his bat against Eng, in Eng, back when Stuart Law was coach.

This is a pretty bonkers article.
Green should be dropped so that his motivation is fueled…where’s the evidence that his motivation is currently lacking?? There is none.
And the line that he’s been given a long run in the test team based on being a talent is rubbish. He averages nearly 50 in FC cricket.
That’s a better FC avg than Warner, Uzzie and Head. Labuschagne’s FC avg is only marginally better than Green’s.
He’s there on performance, as he should be.
He wasn’t dropped in England for Marsh…he was injured. Marsh scored a century and kept his place.
The best thing the selectors can do for Cameron Green is to drop him from Test team … for now

Viv and Dev’s big’uns were anomalies because of their outrageous SR’s, as well as the sheer number of runs.
Dean Jones was close to the best ODI batsman on the planet in the late 80’s / early 90’s, and he had a SR of 72.
In 1983, when Dev hit his 175*, a good score in 50 overs was about 220.

But if Cummins got even just 3 overs (total) out of the three of them, then he’s got more options at the death.
Marsh got 2 overs, which predictably went at more than the 8rpo reqd.

At 3 he would have started his innings with Head, who was scoring at a run a ball against the spinners.
Instead, he came in with Marsh who thought he was playing for a draw on day 5.
All the commentary team, including Ponting, were adamant the pressure of the runs drying up forced Smith to try and push the scoring rate up.
Even if you dismiss that as conjecture, the point is spinners were choking up the runs, the field was back, and there was 31 overs to go. The circumstances suited Smith coming in – an excellent player of spin – way more than Marsh, who isn’t anywhere near as adept at playing spin.

Yes – one cannot have a go at the bowlers for going at a high rate when the situation heavily favoured batters.
However, the Aussie bowlers missed some tricks. Firstly, none of the pacemen bowled a yorker until about the 48th over.
Moreso, the NZ pacemen went for heaps, while their spinners were frugal. Their part-time spinner Phillips took an amazing
3-37 off 10!! Maxi and Zampa were our most economical bowlers, yet despite all this evidence, Cummins never called on any part-time spin overs out of Labs, Head or Smith.
And speaking of decisions, I like Marsh at 3…if we lose a wicket in the powerplay, he can come on and continue blasting. However, when Warner fell in the 20th over, with the score on 175, it should have been Smith that walked out. Marsh could come in later and blast. Smith was perfectly suited to the situation, with the clamps having been put on by spin, sending out Marsh was stupid.

Preston wasn’t developed by the Dogs either…he was purchased at the end of 2022 from the Roosters.
