Mike, I don’t know how any self-respecting journalist could be “loath to criticise” the Bakries. Facts are the club has been a train wreck of broken promises and litigation during their tenure and a club’s reputation is currency in football that goes a long way towards attracting players and staff. There’s not a great track record for billionaire club owners in the a-league and my take is that, frankly, the Bakrie’s have done more damage to football in Queensland by running the club so poorly than having no top flight club at all possibly could have – it’s a soulless, passionless shell of the club that won things. Furthermore, in a country where a-league football is at the bottom of the football code food chain in terms of viewers, if you’re relying on billionaire owners for your food stamps then the league is fundamentally unsustainable and broken. I really struggle to see any evidence of a coherent strategy or any ambition at all from Brisbane of the last 5-6 years, many fans feel frustrated by the largely subpar football and incompetence of the club. The amount of money owners spend is nowhere near as important as how it’s spent and the bread and butter of a club with Brisbane’s resources should be juniour development by high quality coaches in their own academy. This is the best, most viable route I see for clubs to make some real money in the long term, by selling talent to bigger leagues. Brisbane’s training bases have been bouncing around since the club started and there has just not been enough focus on youth. The club’s record for engagement with the football community and for building bridges with local and state government is also terrible, having made no inroads to having matches at a better sized stadium in Brisbane than Lang Park is also a failure that the club has to take some ownership of. We have to, as a community, stop accepting failure’s of governance by football administration or the game will never grow.

Are things finally looking up for football fans in Brisbane?

Those at the heart of this rubbish are absolutely the worst human scum and the whataboutism in some of the comments is pure denial – this kind of hate is inexcusable and has no place in football whatever your other complaints are about administration and the football landscape in general. For the record I share the view that NSL clubs got absolutely shafted when the A-League was formulated and there’s a lot of clubs that deserve a place in the top flight but fascist troublemakers should unreservedly be kicked out of the game for life.

Good to see someone from the dressing room privy to all the goings on posting.

Tom Rogic and Ajdin Hrustic rumours boost Socceroo hopes in Qatar

Hrustic is way above A-League level. Rogic should be playing somewhere decent too, Belgium or Austria would be a good fit for him.

I’m not opposed to socceroos as a name but do think we could do better. Anyone with basic observational skills can accept the aport being called football. It’s effectively the most foot oriented ball sport in existence.

It’s time to finally scrap the name ‘Socceroos’

That’s a very paranoid viewpoint but the country is full of pessimists like yourself apparently.

Green and Gold is a good candidate actually.

Not just that but also Peru / Bolivia’s efforts to play competitive matches at altitude resulting in the altitude ban.

Well done Arnie, credit where credit’s due. It wasn’t pretty but the result matters more and a fantastic experience for the players who’ll be carrying the torch next cycle.

Arnie will always have his critics, but this is his moment to savour

A keeper – a fulltime professional – who doesn’t have enough respect for the opposition to learn the opposing penalty taker’s preferred foot and penalty side without a cheat sheet deserve what they get in my opinion. Peru thought they were going to cruise through this game, they complained the conditions (which were the same for both sides), they arrived very late in Doha, and their press couldn’t rubbish Australia enough. South American sides also have a history of disrupting preperations of visiting teams. Would say Redmayne did nothing outside of the laws of the game to get an advantage. It was gamesmanship pure and simple.

Heart had a good record in their group though. Arguably would have gone through if Kitchee were also in a group of 4

Melbourne City deserved an ACL Round of 16 spot; why should A-League teams even bother?

I’d say success in 3 leagues in 3 very different parts of the world is qualification enough to say ‘world class’ to be fair. He can’t help the nt players at his disposal and got the same group result as every wc coach but hiddink – failure to qualify for rnd of 16.

Ange Postecoglou's latest triumph proves what can be achieved with a bit of self-belief

Football God – that’s part of the story but the old a-league clubs have all been around long enough to be doing more with their academies and turning out better young players. They could be making some of their money back by selling more quality young guys overseas instead of treading water waiting for rule changes.

Football Fan – Yes. 1000 times yes.

City were unlucky with the record they had but that’s football. If we don’t want a-league clubs to have ambition and measure themselves against the best teams in Asia because we currently don’t do well in the comp then why have a league or clubs at all. I for one don’t want to accept the current meagre state of our domestic comp becoming the status-quo. Fact is we could be and should be doing a lot better in Asia but a lot of the clubs here are basket cases atm if we’re honest.

Don’t mind the all stars format, other codes exploit the concept well. I don’t buy in to the ‘too manufactured’ concept. All of football is manufactured it’s an mf game. As a massive Barca fan I’ll be attending this one, hopefully they bring their first team which will be more than capable of putting on a classy show.

'No one wants this s---': Backlash to Barca coming Down Under as A-League clubs hijack their OWN Grand Final

French Cup / Emperor’s Cup have a lot of midweek fixtures. Point is (and my original point) it’s not uncommon. Leagues do it to accomodate existing fixtures without lengthening seasons. Personally as a spectator I love mid-week fixtures and attend a lot of FFA cup fixtures in Brisbane.

There'd be more magic in the FFA Cup if teams could play at home

Really? What about the league cup?

Relatively for Olympic it is a home game compared to Bayswater and in this case still delivered a significant advantage. Goodwin park is great, it’s closer to home for me and I normally enjoy the the food available (and I would like to see the food & bev sales going to the club) but ultimately I don’t mind it going to Perry Park. It’s a great ground and very easy to get to.

except the npl is still running on the weekends during the cup. Midweek is fairly standard for cup comps.
