I think you’re selling José’s Real tenure a bit short. He not only won La Liga in 11-12 but he did it in such a dominant fashion, setting the record for goals scored and goal difference, and finishing nine points clear of Barcelona. That by itself shows that he is at least somewhat tactically flexible and can get his teams to play attacking football.

He is behind the times in tactics now, but I think there are bigger issues than that. He appears to be abysmal at man-management. Ever since Real, he has worn out his welcome by his third season at a club because the players are no longer playing for him at that point. The quote about Ronaldo shows that José is an authoritarian who has to be top dog, which may not always be the best approach when managing superstar players.

I don’t think José is flexible enough to change his methods, either in adapting to modern tactics or in parking his ego. His days as a top manager are finished. I don’t see it getting better for Spurs once they replace him though, since Kane is probably going to leave and Son might follow him out the door too. But maybe a bright young manager who invests wisely can get them back in the top four.

Jose Mourinho: The magician has lost his magic

I unironically think this is a good idea.

Overreach how? The success of Gold Coast and GWS in their primary markets has nothing to do with Canberra. The new TV deal ensures there will be enough money for everybody in the short term, and adding two new clubs would increase the value of the subsequent deal due to including an extra game each week.
The problem with estimating whether the talent and depth has thinned out is that the minimum talent level for an AFL player is not an objective measure. But if it was measurable across eras, shouldn’t the increased professionalism and better coaching mean that skills will necessarily improve over time? And yet mature age state league players are still cracking the big time even so. The population is growing and so is youth participation overall, so there’s plenty of talent out there still. I’m a firm believer in the idea of “build it and they will come”, more opportunities will end up breeding more talent.

Capital idea for AFL expansion

People keep suggesting the competition has too many teams or the talent base isn’t there for more teams, but they very rarely seem to provide any actual evidence to support this view. Junior participation rates have risen over the decades, particularly in NSW and Queensland. This will create enough talent for new clubs, as can be seen by how mature age state league players like Tim Kelly are still making it at the top level.

Capital idea for AFL expansion

I doubt Tasmanians want an existing club parachuted in, they’d probably prefer their own unique identity. Tasmania’s economy is doing alright and has been for a few years, but remember Melbourne has 10x the population, and before the pandemic it was the engine driving the national economy, with the biggest population growth. If I were running a struggling club, I’d take my chances in Melbourne. Once the pandemic subsides there will be plenty of opportunities to grow the supporter base and attract sponsors.

AFL mergers or relocations could resurface due to COVID-19

Adding regional teams is a harebrained idea, and didn’t work when the VFL tried it in the 90s. The second tier works best when it’s based on traditional rivalries and clubs are relatively close, so that more fans can attend and the players don’t have to take too much time out of their lives. Not to mention country areas have their own valuable football history that shouldn’t be subsumed with one team. The TSL and NEAFL struggle precisely because of the length of travel involved.
The second tier’s struggles are financial. They either need to find a way to appeal to a new generation and increase their crowds (a tall task), or cut their expenses. Maybe even return to amateur status if it keeps them alive. Not everything can be popular and successful, everything has a shelf life.

The future of the AFL and our state leagues

They won’t tell the AFL to get stuffed, because they’re not financially viable otherwise. They need AFL money to remain semi-professional or they’re going to return to amateur football played in public parks.

And how much would those stars get on other networks? More, I’ll bet.

Who really won the Super League war?

Heart had an strange name that had been pushed by their owner from the beginning (yes there was a poll but the owner had bedded in the name into public consciousness long before that), colours also foisted from above, barely got 10k to a game outside derbies and had about four years of history. Doesn’t seem like that much to be nostalgic for, was there really that much of a culture to wash away?

The Hearts marched in, but how many have marched out?

Cannabis isn’t performance enhancing, it’s performance reducing. It makes no sense for it to attract a ban of any sort, besides moral wowsering.

Good grief, does nobody actually read my comments before responding to them? I never said it was a reflection of Manly’s support. I agree that it is a reflection of the appetite for rugby league in Brisbane. It also points to the ability for Manly to eventually develop a bigger fanbase there than “the diehards located on the Northern Beaches” who rarely number more than 8000.

The five Sydney teams that could relocate to Queensland

You can when there were only two games on the Friday.

The five Sydney teams that could relocate to Queensland

Not entirely correct. This year’s was a double header with Wests Tigers v Penrith.

You’re missing my point anyway. I’m not saying that Manly have some gigantic fanbase in Brisbane, I’m saying they have established a precedent of playing games there, and the crowds show there is a chance to carve out a niche there higher than their usual 8000 people at Brookvale.

Raising the Cowboys, Titans and Storm strengthens my point actually, since it shows that the Brisbane public will latch onto teams from out of town.

The five Sydney teams that could relocate to Queensland

Let’s note that 3 of Manly’s top 5 home attendances ever were at Suncorp Stadium. The other two were the double header opening of the Olympic Stadium in 1999, and a game from 1968, so they’re probably never going to repeat such high attendances in Sydney. Yes, these three games were against the Broncos, but the point is they have a chance at building a sizeable fanbase in Queensland that they’ll never be able to in Sydney.

The five Sydney teams that could relocate to Queensland

What on earth are you talking about? Plenty of people in Brisbane follow St George Illawarra. I know several Manly and Bulldogs fans too.

The five Sydney teams that could relocate to Queensland

I support moving Manly, they already have the maroon colour, have sold games to Brisbane in recent years and they have some of the lowest crowds in the comp at Brookvale. But trying to combine Wynnum and the Sunshine Coast in the same catchment is just silly, those are very different regions with multiple regions in between. Just call them the Wynnum-Manly Sea Eagles or Brisbane Sea Eagles.

They had the same issue at Optus stadium didn’t they? A young Essendon bloke had to take a taxi to hospital.

No, this is sheer lunacy. It’s not even a half baked idea, it’s completely raw.

Cockatoo isn’t from Queensland, he’s a Territorian. I’d take him at the Lions and try to develop him as a half forward.

Out of favour: The players who will be at new clubs next year

You know what else keeps a brand up in lights? Winning. If Shaw can keep winning he deserves the job. It’s not as simple as someone being a better coach if they were a better player, or teams would simply hire the best player to coach, end of discussion. If Shaw is getting this team to play well, why shouldn’t he continue?

Shaw deserves the chance to coach North permanently

Well, the rumour mill has been in overdrive about Horse to North.

The title’s about India, but very little else is. No justification of why the suggested selection changes are the right ones. India run with a five bowler strategy so that they can bat deep. In most games this has worked because Pandya has bowled well all tournament, probably as good as Kumar if not better. What need is there to change up this strategy? I agree Mohammed Shami should be in, but in place of Kumar since he’s in better form. In addition, Jadhav has not conclusively proven himself to be a better batting option than either Pant or Karthik. His skills as an all-rounder are irrelevant, he has only bowled 6 overs in this World Cup and they’ve been unimpressive. I’d like to see them try Agarwal instead of one of the wicketkeepers. He certainly looked impressive in the tests against Australia, and he usually has a high scoring rate. But it’s an odd time to give out an ODI debut, so I doubt it will happen.
