A now masters sprinter / pole vaulter whose passion for athletics far outweighs his ability

An interesting side note to the women’s shot put. New Zealand apparently forgot to put in an entry for gold medal favourite Valerie Adams. However the IOC allowed her name to be entered in the last few days and put it down as an administrative error.

You forgot that since the IAAF started keeping world records for the 200m in 1951 that he is the only man to hold the 100m and 200m World Record at the same time. (yes I realise that Jessie Owens has a pre war claim to this as well.

But can I throw another name into the mix. What about Michael Johnson? Three individual gold medals over 200m and 400m. Two relay golds (if you count the one where Young got the team got disqualified). World record holder in the 200, 400 and 4x400m. And only man to win the 200-400 double anywhere.

Is Bolt the greatest sprinter of all time?

Bailey did look like he could run faster, but so did Blake, Powell, and Bolt. I don’t think you can judge form based on the heats. Asafa Powell has showed us at many Championships that just because you look half a second faster than anyone else in the heats and semi finals it doesn’t mean you wont tie up in the final and come in 5th. I am going to stick with my original predictions.

Men’s 100m Final is the highlight of Athletics Day 3

Powell is going to go down in history as the fastest man in the world never to win an individual major championship gold medal. (Commonwealth Games doesn’t count!)

Bailey did run 9.88 in 2010 as well so he hasn’t come from nowhere. No idea what he was doing in 2011 though…

Sorry Michael. That time of 6:50pm was added in my a sub editor.

The long jumpers and pole vaulters seem like they are being effected by strong gusty head winds. But 8.16m should not be a silver medal winning distance in the Olympics!

I think Rudisha will lead from the front and run a stupidly fast time as that is his best chance of winning but will not go for the world record.

And yes, the Men’s 10km was epic. I’ve never seen a group that big still together with 600m to go. And the noise from the crowd even through the TV was amazing.

London 2012: Australia looking for gold in Athletics on Day 2

Thanks Worlds biggest. Watt in his interview said that the wind was bad and when he heard the automatic was 8.10m he thought he would do this easily and mentally switched off. He should have more for the final.

Tim, if he made the final then the semi would be his second last major race. 😉

Cole and Thomas through in the 400H.

Melissa Breen has the 5th quickest season’s best in her heat of the 100m and needs to finish top 3 to make it through. It will be tough but I think she can do it.

It is on www.london2012.com but a perhaps easier way to find out heats and lane draws is through the IAAF website.

The draws for the heats has been released.

Melissa Breen has been given a free ride though the preliminary round.

Brendan Cole has drawn heat 1 of the 400H which seems to be the weakest. Tristan Thomas has drawn heat 4 which looks quite strong on paper and will have to run well to finish in the top 3 and be an automatic qualifier and avoid depending on being one of the quickest non automatics.

It looks like despite being selected in the 1500m that Jeff Riseley has withdrawn to concentrate on the 800m as his name does not appear on the start list.

The automatic qualifier in the Shot Put has been set at 20.65m which is 2cm further than Dale Stevenson’s PB.

Dani Samuals will have to throw a season’s best to reach the automatic qualifying mark of 63m in the women’s discus.

And in the Men’s Long Jump the automatic mark has been set at 8.10m which both Frayne and Watt should jump.
