How can you possible say that this has “reached a new low”?

It is no worse than several games he played in last year.

The most awful irony is that next week will probably see an over correction

Umpires' anti-Ginnivan bias has reached a new low - it's time for the AFL to step in

Everyone has a right to an opinion. But those opinions aren’t of equal quality.

If you have engaged in this topic and you can’t understand the difference between:

1. Small established clubs selling low drawing games to state governments to play in regional grounds
2. The requirements of a new club to be financially viable

…then that just demonstrates a lack of the critical thinking skills. I.e. it is a low quality opinion

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

“During the campaign, Labor leader Rebecca White suggested that the existing stadiums be used until the club and AFL could prove that the demand was there, before any plans for new infrastructure were made.

It makes sense. That way, the Macquarie Point venue wouldn’t become a white elephant if actual attendance dropped off after the initial introduction of the AFL side.”

I couldn’t believe when I heard this during the election campaign and I don’t believe I am reading this here.

Tasmania lobbied the AFL for a team. There is certainly a moral case for an AFL club having a team in Tasmania but it is pretty much all downside financial risk for the AFL (and therefore the existing clubs that need to support the issuing of a new licence)

The requirement of the new stadium is to give the best chance for this team to be a success.

To reverse that, putting the onus on the team to be a success first and attract fans to a dilapidated, inaccessible suburban cricket ground is completely missing the point that should be obvious to blind freddy let alone someone wanting to lead that State or someone writing opinion pieces on the matter.

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

Yeah that’s right. The AFL is actually just pretending it requires a new stadium that it can actually play its game in to ensure the viability of the new club when actually it is making the massive commitment to start a new club in a city of 250,000 people purely to spite football codes that are far less popular that don’t have a team there

I don’t think “cynical” is right word

The AFL holding Tasmania to ransom with stadium political football is an utter disgrace

I am outraged on your behalf….you should go to the police. Blackmail is a crime

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

…..Wanderers played at the showgrounds when CommBank was being built (it contributed nothing to CommBank though I agree with that)

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

but why should public money be spent on a C of E for a club to win a domestic competition.

Because they exhibit varying degrees of the following:

-co investment – usual state and federal governments are contributing some fraction of the capex with the club / league also putting in millions
-lifecycle maintenance and – the lease contract requires the clubs to pay as much in maintenance over the life of the investment than the actual initial investment and delivery the asset back at the end of the lease
– community value – the venues, or parts of them, are generally made available to other community groups to strengthen the social value of the investment

It is a trope in Australian soccer circles that it is getting ripped off in a large part because it ignores all of the above.

It is useful distraction for Football Australia, state feds and APL franchises because otherwise the mad mass of sokkah nutters screaming about funding might actual focus their whinging on the more appropriate targets.

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

I genuinely started reading that comment as satire…..

….but the guy generally thinks that there is something inherent in the sport it self, rather than how it embodies ancient political and ethno-religious rivalries…..

The delusion levels are breathtaking

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

(bar the Sydney showground)

Sure about that?

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

I just went to place that makes coffee and asked for a latte.

How’s this for blackmail…..they then demanded $5 otherwise they wouldn’t make me one!

It’s truly outrageous!

Football in Australia must never stop fighting for its fair share of funding

Yep. The guys is full of it

The AFL
-agreed to knock down and sell of Waverly to remove competition with the new stadium
-pay $30M with the proceeds of Waverly for the Option to own the stadium 25 years later
-committed something like 45 games a year at rental rates that including paying down the capex in its contract with the private operator

The comparison with Tarniet is absurd. The equivalent would be if they had gifted 4 times the land of docklands stadium to the AFL if the committed to building a stadium on 1/4 of it and the could commercially develop the rest.

'We are homeless': 'Frustrated' Arnie's plea as Socceroos train for crunch WC qualifier on rugby league fields

“The stuff you see at Tarneit is paid for in whole. Nothing on the tax payer”

Bollocks.

It is the gifting of public land to developers on the very misguided idea that a committed soccer venue as part of that land gift will bear social and economic fruit.

What is a clear is you have no clue what you are talking about.

'We are homeless': 'Frustrated' Arnie's plea as Socceroos train for crunch WC qualifier on rugby league fields

And that’s actually just half the story. The club is then responsible for the maintenance over the life of the asset and have a contractual obligation to return the asset in a specified condition at the end of the lease.

Note this is available for all sports, it is just some are unable to do the work and make the commitment to make it happen. Rather just whinge incessantly as an alternative strategy

'We are homeless': 'Frustrated' Arnie's plea as Socceroos train for crunch WC qualifier on rugby league fields

What a dumb take.

Luton are a very small club that got promoted in a pyramid system

Tasmania is a club that is being created for entry into a “closed shop” national competition where said national competition has every right to ensure its financial viability.

Devils ready to raise hell: AFL's newest club goes back to the future with traditional jumper as stadium furore rages on

“We want the AFL to stop destroying local footy in their pursuit of fame and fortune.”

What a weird arrogation of “we the fans”. You talk for your self only, dude

Lol

Yup, rugby league being the top story on the Roar is a predictable as Peter V’Landy’s acolytes doing everything but engage with a factual account of his performance

“closely monitoring the rugby league page”

It is literally the top article on the Roar!

Given it was written by Nick Tedeschi about Peter Vlandy’s I rightly concluded it would contain hyperbolic claims and cringeworthy platitudes. Everything I wrote above is actual fact you will note

Exclusive: 'We want $1 billion'- V'landy's bullish vision of expansion, new Cup comp and staggering wealth

Certainly helps with the counting of low numbers, to be fair

Sure, keep telling yourself that

Exclusive: 'We want $1 billion'- V'landy's bullish vision of expansion, new Cup comp and staggering wealth

The only undeniable relative achievement of V’Landys is his success in garnering embarrassing hagiographic nonsense like
“there is little doubt Peter V’landys is one of the great leaders in the history of Australian sport,”
In terms of the AFL here is the truth
1. The AFL’s just released annual report shows a $360M revenue gap between the NRL, the highest ever gap
2. This is before the AFL commences its new TV rights deal with an average $240M higher a year than the NRL’s current deal which VLandys coughed up to placate News ltd (probabaly describes why he gets so much glowing coverage from news outlets)
3. The AFL just sold out 4 games in RL’s heartland states with four clubs there with accumulated over 100 years of presence. Despite being the most successful football club in the country this century, the one NRL club in AFL land only got 20,000 against the best NRL team this century.
4. The AFLW already has all 18 clubs represented and a significantly higher average salary
5. The NRL’s vegas foray got 60,000 average veiwers in the US despite the massive and presumably unsustainable marketing effort
6. NRL is increasingly dependent of gambling and pokies income when the social license is disappearing.
Hardly the sport on “the most positive trajectory”. People like VLandys don’t leave institutions in a better state than they found them

This author sure aint!

It is amazing how common the view is of how horrible their first code is administrated / officiated

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

” The NRL had a huge opening round one (including Vegas) with 220,000 attending over the games. Not to be sneezed at. The games from Vega$ were a rating smash. The AFL knows what it has to do and is doing a good job with a great product. But you know what – the NRL is doing the same.”

Certainly not in the US which was the purpose of the venture.

I had a similar two and fro with a league fan last week on this which he couldn’t get the point but it seems blindingly obvious that any higher ratings in Australia of merely playing a game in a different country can only be attributable to novelty.

The AFL didn't need to rob the NRL's house with Opening Round - it's more than big enough already

The AFL looks “petty and insecure” for taking an initiative in line with a clear inter-generational strategy and investment?

What an absurd take.

In terms of deciding a “winner”, I would go with the league that got four sell out crowds in its non-traditional markets rather than the code that got 60,000 people watching on a primary cable channel in a country of 300 million for a far more costly investment.

Forward looking is true satire
