It is nonsensical to say that Pickett in the ruck was nonsensical when he prevailed over the taller Saint he was up against.

It wasn’t Max Gawn, for goodness sake.

AFL Round 5 power rankings

Neither do the players.

"I have no desperation in me": Buckley still uncommitted on Collingwood future

If you think that’s hefty you’re kidding yourself.

Collingwood handed hefty fine for phone use

Van Diemen’s Land Devils. Bring it on.

I know Mt Wellington is a bit limited skiing wise, but it is closer to Hobart than Buller is to Melbourne.

The Demons are 5-0 - is this a drill?

“(T)he (Richmond) cupboard of youngsters is virtually barren…”

You made the likes of Ross, Collier-Dawkins, Coleman-Jones, Dow et cetera sound like no-hopers. If they’re yet to prove themselves it is largely because they haven’t been given much of a chance. In the case of Rioli Jnr, no chance at all.

Which top-four side is most under threat this year?

Shane Edwards definitely in.

Joel Bowden unluckily out.

Richmond versus Carlton: Best teams of the last 50 years

“As far as I know, AFL is the only sport that plays on an oval…”

Not heard of cricket, yet?

Play the game, it's still the same

Since 1980 the population has grown by just over three quarters, the number of clubs by half and the number of players in a team by a tenth. Combining the latter two into one equation, it’s roughly three quarters population growth and two thirds AFL growth.

In other words, population growth in the last four decades or so has exceeded AFL player growth by a not inconsiderable margin.

Even allowing for more sporting options today and possibly stronger non-Victorian leagues back then, that hardly screams a diminution of talent.

The scary stat behind the demise of high scoring in the AFL

The only way Melbourne will touch a flag is on a slalom course.

The Melbourne Demons are a genuine flag contender

Of the twelve Port and Saints players, Boak and Butters would get a game at Richmond, with Butler going close but ultimately lacking in defensive output, while Marshall could be called on as injury depth.

Season 2020 AFL combined team: Five of six (Power, Tigers, Saints)

One of these dynasties is still in the hunt.

When it’s over, the pontifications shall be less guided by guesswork.

What is the AFL's greatest modern dynasty?

This should not be misconstrued as a criticism of Treloar. There was no such intent. I wish him well.

Collingwood and Treloar - sorry for the three flags you missed Ads but we seem to have overspent

It would be fair to say that that Treloar unintentionally played a part in Richmond’s success.

Missing out on Treloar forced Richmond to chase Prestia. Having Prestia helped Richmond get Caddy. Having Prestia and Caddy helped Richmond get Lynch.

Therefore, I wouldn’t necessarily say that Treloar would have won three flags at Punt Rd.

Collingwood and Treloar - sorry for the three flags you missed Ads but we seem to have overspent

It may be a tad simplistic, but basically if you constantly rely on a chain of short sideways or backwards handballs around midfield congestion to finally free the ball, then you need a lot of relatively static midfielders around the ball to receive it and immediately pass it on in the same manner.

That means there aren’t too many to kick it to. As in, going forward. Towards the goals. Where you can score.

Collingwood's broken system is doomed to fail

“I’m not saying that this group should be challenging for a premiership. But I doubt Richmond fans thought that they would be three years ago either.”

I honestly did think that. 2016 felt like an anomaly.

2020 is no anomaly for Essendon, I reckon.

Essendon puts the red sash on a white flag

Keep trying. You’ll work it out one day.

Six talking points from AFL Round 9

You’re not on your Todd Malone there.
Seriously, how a bloke as tall and potentially as good and versatile as CCJ flies under the radar is staggering.
Richmond passed on Oscar Allen to take him. Allen is a serious talent, make no mistake about that.
Did Richmond make a mistake in opting for CCJ?
Most probably not.
The club needs to put up a ring fence and no poaching signs…

Six talking points from AFL Round 9

There’s another Tiger ruckman – Callum Coleman-Jones. But I can see why he wasn’t mentioned. He’s young, injured and rubbish.

Truly he is. Rubbish. No other club should ever want him…

Ever.

There. I think I got away with it and not let the zombie big cat out of the bag.

Six talking points from AFL Round 9

I agree, but would add that although juniors tend not to get the ball and then purposefully hang on to it, AFL players may quickly learn to do that in order to slow down the game.

There needs to be balance for both the ball-carrier attempting to move the game forward and the tackler doing the same. Moving the game forward is the crucial part, along with sensible safety provisions, of course.

But then safety provisions are also prone to rorting by the ball-carrier as well. Clarkson was on about ducking into tackles the other day, although when his team get a shot at goal resulting from the same manoeuvre, I don’t hear him complaining then!

That’s the rub. The rules have more holes than the roads outside many country grounds and there are so many incentives to manipulate any of them to advantage that the rule makers and enforcers may be disinclined to make necessary changes, which would be a real shame.

Ultimately, congestion puts more opposition players in and around the one with the ball. Therefore, more tackles will be laid before opportunity presents for disposal.

The holding the ball rule is not footy

“Houli was traded to the Tigers.”
This is believed widely to be the case, but it never actually happened. There was no trade.
Richmond took Houli as the third pick in the 2010 pre-season draft. It was the club’s only selection in that particular draft and one that was more successful than all of the other clubs’ selections put together (spoiler alert: there weren’t many anyway, but even if there were this still might have been the case).
Pick four was Essendon’s. Adrian Dodoro has said recently that the Bombers wanted Houli to stay. Presumably, they would have taken Houli back if Richmond had passed on him.
Therefore, one may say that Houli was lucky and so was Richmond. However, the question remains as to why Essendon didn’t do more to keep him?

The decade that was: Richmond

The solution is simple.

West Melbourne isn’t west enough. Docklands should be Dockerlands.

Heck, Western Bulldogs wouldn’t even need a name change to be relocated to Perth. Throw in the Subiaco Saints and the Northam Kangaroos and the remaining Vic clubs are suddenly travelling more and West Australian ones travelling less.

Of course, with five clubs in the state rather than two, the sponsorship and memberships etc might thin out to say the least. However, almost going broke is a small price to pay for lynching Mr Vic Bias on the nearest honkey nut tree.

Yes, okay. This isn’t going to happen. But you knew it was sarcasm anyway.

The Vic-centric AFL discriminates against WA clubs

There aren’t 23 matches; one round constitutes a bye, leaving 22 matches per club in each home-and-away season.

When a Tasmanian club comes in (along with Canberra?), the inequalities of the 22-match draw will be diminished (although not eliminated).

Extending the season is a thought best left for those brought up on soccer.
