I love the game of rugby, and give it a shot on the electric guitar

“The only reason SA fans think it was better is because they won”
Piru, that’s simply projection. Not true.

But you correctly say there was a difference, that “O’Keefe pedantically taking extra time to ensure Kolisi was part of every discussion”. I’d add that he pedantically reviewed every major decision, which I assume many (including myself) were pleased with. Because they are BIG, game changing decisions in the biggest match outside the World Cup Final.
That’s all coaches and fans ask for.

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

“wanting to influence the officials to favoring the boks”
Peter, that is just spin and your opinion. It doesn’t make you right.

No-one wants to win because they’ve received special favour, certainly not me.

And as I’ve said, I wouldn’t have done what Rassie did and I’m not defending him. It was disappointing. I’m trying to delve a bit deeper into the causes rather than the symptoms.

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

Take it up with Andy Goode and many of the other UK experts mate

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

I agree it was completely biased/one-sided.

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

Personally, I think the refereeing was markedly better in game 2 than in game 1.

What is “fair”?
Different people will have different interpretations of “fair”. I’m just putting that out there to think about…..

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

PaulD- I understand your point, please hear mine. I am not defending Rassie. I wouldn’t have done that as there are far too many variables involved.
Geoff made the point “ in an appropriate forum, and the rugby world will listen.” I am saying that if the “correct channels” are not working and have not worked for many years, for numerous coaches, (I.E the rugby world is not listening), then what does one resort to?
The status quo isn’t working.
My interpretation of Rassie’s video is it was rather an attack on the system, after many years of frustration from not only Rassie, but numerous coaches.
It’s an approach he has tried (ignoring whether you agree or disagree with it). If you have a better idea, please inform me, bearing in mind that following the traditional and official channels has not and are not working?
I’m genuinely all ears.
Thanks mate

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

“ in an appropriate forum, and the rugby world will listen.”

Geoff, they (as in coaches) have tried, and the rugby world has NOT listened.

Think about how frustrated Cheika got in public, so imagine the conversations in private and in going “through the correct channels”? Whether Cheika’s interpretations were right or wrong who knows? But from what I’ve read most experts agree that Rassie was correct in his analysis, although obviously biased.

I don’t see this kind of thing happening again, not by Rassie or other coaches. It was a shock, a jolt.

I haven’t commented on this topic yet (the no comment approach… lol) because I’ve been both disappointed but also see the validation of what Rassie and Siya said.
If the channels and systems aren’t working, going back years and years, then do you continue to flog a dead horse?

Ben O’Keefe and all the officials did a markedly better job as the magnitude of the occasion, and the importance of victory to both teams (including populations of 60 million) finally sunk in. This is not club rugby. And furthermore, it’s not up to a referee to decide the kind of style of rugby that they want a game to be played in, or how a team should play. That is implicit bias.

The Wrap: Springboks victory surge vindicates Erasmus, but at what cost?

Wonderful game of rugby. I really enjoyed that.
Power. Intensity.
And two excellent tries scored involving some very deft touches.
Redemption for the Boks (ignoring whether you agree or disagree with what Rassie did).
Lions were impotent. Had nothing.
The longest game of rugby I’d imagine!? Especially the 1st half.
After last weeks game I said I was very hopeful for game 2, from a Sprinbok perspective. I’m happy that my analysis was right 😊
Where is my mate NV who completely disagreed with me? 😛

The Springboks handle the British and Irish Lions 27-9 to level the series

Howzit 😊

Setting my alarm clock for 1:55am is not fun hey!? 😂

Kwagga – I thought he went okay, wasn’t bad, but not great. They missed Vermeulen. Duane is both a big bruiser, but a very smart player rolled into one so he’s very hard to replace. Honestly, I don’t know who to select at 8?

We very nearly won, so just need to tweak a few things and I think we could have the edge in game 2. Personally I feel that we need to bring the back 3 into the game more, (and not just chasing box kicks.) Both JP and Habana scored excellent set move tries in game 2 in 2009. Need a bit more of that I reckon.

Match report: Lions roar back to down Springboks in first Test

I dunno mate, if those try’s were ruled differently (or small errors not made in the lead up to those try’s, like Kolbe’s fingers touching the ball after it was knocked back by the Lions player), then it would’ve been a different result.

We’ll see, big game 2 coming up 🙂

Match report: Lions roar back to down Springboks in first Test

So after a tightly contested first Test, the Boks have no chance hey NV? 😁

Match report: Lions roar back to down Springboks in first Test

Boks were their own worst enemy, and Lions took advantage of that and played better. Well done to them.

But, as a Bok supporter I carry a lot of hope into Test 2, because:

– Besides the one maul try the Lions scored, they never looked like scoring.

– I only recall them pressurising the Boks try line once , early in the 2nd half when they scored the maul try.

– The Boks crossed the Lions whitewash 4 times, only to have ever so marginal infringes mean no try.

– Of those disallowed try’s, the Boks broke the Lions line. I only recall Lawes breaking the line for the Lions once.

– Boks can fix giving away very silly penalties like offsides.

– Boks will (hopefully) clean up those marginal errors and be rewarded for those kind breaks and try’s in game 2 & 3.

– Hopefully it gives the SA coaches confidence to tell his players to run the ball more!!

2014 Ellis Park Test tops the 2013 Ellis Park one.
Boks beat ABs at the death with Pat Lambie’s kick.
Awesome back and forth rugby throughout both of those matches.

1973 or 2000: What was the greatest game of rugby ever?

They’ve been playing rugby since November or December last year, so a hang of a lot more than 500 minutes.

Last year, none of the SA based players had played rugby, or even trained properly since early March 2020 when Covid hit, due to government restrictions.

The contrast between 2020 and 2021 couldn’t be more different.

South Africa A beat visiting Lions

Howzit. I’m here in Australia so all okay, but my family are in KZN. They’re fine but obviously very very troubling. It’s hectic hey.

Friends and family have taken up arms and are protecting their communities, from Salt Rock and Ballito, Umhlanga, Kloof and Hillcrest. It’s surreal and very real!!
Yesterday family members could smell the gunfire rising up the hill from Westmead in Pinetown. It’s anarchy there.

Boks- yes I think they may try to alienate our back three. Vermuelan and Pollard normally fall back there so I reckon Rassie/ Jaque will plan for that.

I thought we gave away too many penalties so that’s something to work on too. Otherwise, winning was a pass mark 😁 🏉 👍

South Africa A beat visiting Lions

SA ‘A’ 1st half was power. I think the physicality and intensity took the Lions by surprise.
Lions scored 10 points against 13 men, only 3 points against 15. That tells you something.

I was impressed with the Lions scrum, clearly they have focussed on this aspect of play as they held their own.

Both team didn’t show their hands in the 2nd half, saving it for the Test matches.

Come Test time, the Bok pack will be even more beefed up as the starting row and Malherbe feature will be in the team. An added benefit is they should up the ante at scrum time to put the Lions under pressure. Hopefully Lood can play too.

South Africa A beat visiting Lions

Yes Faith, it’s impressive. They are very well coached with good depth.

Their ball placement at rucks is superb, they have speed off the line in defence and know when to turn up the heat to effectively contest a vital ruck, scrum or lineout to get a penalty or turnover, as we saw tonight. That takes team composure and the patience to trust in the game plan and in your teammates.

And they “take the 3”….

Magnificent Seven: Jaminet's boot powers France to Game 2 victory

Well there you go… the experts back my observations and assertion 😁
Who’s ranked 1st? Boks?

Magnificent Seven: Jaminet's boot powers France to Game 2 victory

Why?

Didn’t realise I could be late to predict the future rankings, and who might be favourites for a tournament in 2 years time ….

Magnificent Seven: Jaminet's boot powers France to Game 2 victory

Prediction:
France is going to threaten a top 3 world ranking over the next couple years, and be a serious contender to win the next World Cup.

Nice article Geoff.

At Test level, take the shot at goal. It’s simple. End of story as far as I’m concerned. Points are better than no points.

Unless your team is 15 points up and have all the momentum in your favour.

Taking the three: The imperfect science of rugby captaincy (part two)

Ja, he made a marked difference when he came on. The man can scrum!
He’s looking like a raging bull ready to charge at “red”.

Springboks end Test drought with win

Argentina- I have no idea. They certainly surprised and impressed. All credit to them.

500 minutes- I agree with you. It was random. As you say “ They should have just said we haven’t trained, we can’t train, we won’t be ready.” That was the truth and all there was to it.

Springboks end Test drought with win

Paulo, at the time the majority of the Bok squad played/ were based in SA and they had not trained, let alone played a rugby game for months, from March to October so about 7 months, before the RC. Super Rugby Unlocked only started on 10 October, the very first rugby game. Most would’ve just tried to keep fit at home before gathering as teams as month or so prior for the first time.
Last year, South Africa was very very different to NZ and Australia.
At that time I think only Faf, Pollard (was injured), Kolbe and Willie were playing overseas while Eben was injured as some stage too.
Vermuelen returned to SA from Japan. A few others then headed overseas around that time such as Marx and Mapimpi to Japan, and RG Snyman (injured) and Mostert to England. Lood has been injured too.
I don’t think I’m missing anyone? I don’t recall De Allende’s exact movements, when he went overseas.
The others
