The devaluing is due largely to the innate snobbery in, and around, the sport which has prevented it;s growth outside the leading private schools and wealthier suburbs of Sydney & Brisbane. It’s allowed it to be bypassed by a range of other sports which actually go out of their way to attract players and grow

Six talking points from Wallabies versus England

And there’s the problem with Australian Rugby, and why it isn’t growing (or even holding it’s own) summed up in one comment
No other sport in Australian gives a rats about school sport. It should be by and large an irrelevance, but Rugby is still treated as the domain of a few rich schools and their old boys, and is dying because of it
Kill off a team in Penrith, we don;t want any of those ‘bogans’ playing our sport – but we will give scholarships to a couple of Islander kids becuase we need some big forwards, makes us feel we’re not elitist racists too….
Pathetic – and increasingly irrelevant in an Australian sporting landscape where it is rapidly being bypassed not only by the big three sports but also by Football and Basketball

He lasted about 12 excruciatingly embarrassing balls, not 2. He was so far out of his depth it was like someone got a promotion from Sydney 2nd grade cricket to play for Australia.
When will we learn that these flat track bullies with immense technical deficiencies will be shown up on English wickets and in English conditions, unless they are of near Smith level quality?

Thoroughly outclassed, but Aussies can take heart in ODI revival

The first time! Really? You obviously don;t remember (or aren’t old enough to remember) the Windies glory days. Plenty of Australian teams looked rather intimidated back then
This was a bad performance, but don;t got overboard. NZ have got a good mix to play England, though the latter are definitely favourites.
Our main problem is, as it has been in ODIs for about 2-3 years, muddled selections and playing favourites

Because the genius that is S Warne tells everyone Stoinis is awesome. If anything this should (but won’t) the myth that Warne is an oracle.
In reality, like his own long-term commentary backer Chappell, he is way too biased in his favourites and enemies to offer any kind of unbiased crtitique.
He gave Stoinis 4/10 in his match ratings FFS!! So unless you get 3.5/10 for turning up, how on earth does that work out (and you don;t as he gave Handscomb, deservedly, 3/10).
Starc – a Warne non-favourite got 5/10 – admittedly he didn’t bowl particularly well, but his late runs alone deserve to advance him a fair bit higher than bloody Stoinis in these so-called expert ratings…..

So your idea of where society is at is that we need a police state where people are being constantly watched and threatened by thick wanna-be fascists bearing 1984 style (not even ironically given) titles like ‘behavioural awareness officer’
This is a joke. How old are you? Do you remember the old days of terraces and the like? Of the Sydney Hill and Bay 13? That was unruly behaviour…. (and quite a bit of fun TBH)
Crowd behaviour these days is mostly so mild that this total overreaction and the responses of the social fun police like yourself is a complete joke. It says a lot about our society and its attitudes to things we personally find “offensive” or “threatening” must be shut down and stamped out, regardless of other views.
I’m not a swearer or barracker. I personally do get annoyed when people yell and rant around me, but that’s their right to do so, I just tune them out (and sometimes find it amusing when they’re demonstrably wrong).
Sure, have family areas in non-drinking zones where people can sit with their kids. I certainly appreciated these when my kids were little. That’s fantastic to have these initiatives.
But FFS what on earth is wrong with having a crack at an umpire? They shouldn’t even be listening to comments from the crowd. People have been doing that for years, why is it suddenly a problem? And players are paid squillions. I’m sure they can soak up some people having a go if they make a mistake
I’m not talking about racist, homophobic, sexist or violent language. That’s not on. But surely you can call a player or an umpire a mug if they make a mistake?

Why I support the AFL's fan crackdown
