Loved watching the game. I can’t help but wonder if the Rebels good fortunes (at least in part), is the result of their dire straights. Playing like they have nothing to lose, because they quite literally don’t. This has been a feature of Australian rugby for about 20 years. I look forward to the day when Australian rugby teams Will again start applying themselves to their full potential whenever they run out on the field, instead of waiting until they are backed into a corner before showing us what they can actually do. It’s about taking real pride in your work and being fearless in battle, and it’s amazing what can unfold when teams decide to just do it.

You could be right Peter. Our attacking breakdown issues have been so obvious for so long, I am dumbfounded that so little has been done about it. Maybe it was the coaches focussing on the wrong areas. Cheika just had our forwards charging in helter skelter without any signs of timing or technique. We literally showed stuff all interest in getting our hands dirty under Rennie. I still remember the ball being kicked to within 5 metres of the AB try line. The AB’s had to turn, run back, regroup for a defensive ruck, with no one available to cover the blind side. All we had to do was charge through, use momentum to push over the ball and score. What happened? We gave a half hearted chase, committed 2 forwards to the ruck ( with one going in too high), with the rest lining up for a glorious carry. The AB’s ran back, regrouped perfectly in a low formation, and pushed us off the ball. I doubt I’ve ever sworn so much. It was pathetic.

It’s symptomatic of rugby’s position in Australia unfortunately. RA are desperate and not yet self sustaining in terms of elite level player and coaching development. Causes short term thinking and reactionary responses.

The abandonment of our own coaching development program is what set us up to fail. Presumably, the powers at be thought stuff that, we’ll cut the program, save some money, and just import our top coaches. Leaving us with diddly squat….

So can reality, as it has shown over the past 15 years. The technical requirements to perform at the full time professional level, have surpassed that of good old Aussie grit I’m afraid. And even that historical quality of Aussie rugby players is fading away.

Our current problem is not a lack of potential champions, it’s the development of their finer skills that true test champions possess, and that falls on our coaching development, or lack of it. We now have plenty of attacking potential, which is more than I can say we had up until about 5-6 years ago. But a team of players that has the ability to make good, winning decisions throughout a game is what makes them champions. Personally, I’m so tired of hype and excitement that is hamstrung by poor team cohesion and test match smarts. Some reality checks and honest reflection from RA would get me far more excited about a successful and sustainable future.
Enough of realistic expectations, let's get excited about future Wallabies
