I agree.

Watching it live, I couldn’t figure out at the time why none of the commentators (or the video ref) picked up on Soliola taking Keary’s legs out, despite several closeup replays while the scrum was being set.

I don’t think that it was deliberate, but it was definitely careless, so it was a clear penalty.

If everyone hadn’t been distracted by the ball hitting the trainer afterwards, I reckon they would’ve put Soliola on report… Keary almost does a full 360/flip in the air afterwards, then lands on his back.

Ben Cummins is a good man and a great referee – so lay off him!

A transparent bluff that worked…

Peter Bell's hardball trades can make Fremantle a flag contender

That rule’s pretty vague, but surely moving your entire body to get the ball over the line counts as ‘promoting the ball from the position the ball has been grounded’?

As I said… I’m not going to lose any sleep over it, but I’ve just never seen that happen before, so I’m curious whether it’s a loophole that may need to be addressed in the rule book for in the future?

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 3

Yep, that was exactly my thought at the time, both when it happened live, and when they showed the replays.
He didn’t lift or extend his arm at all, but definitely gave himself another push off the ground with his legs after his arm had hit the ground short of the line.
NSW won in the end, so I’m not going to get too hung up on it, but I’m curious what the actual rule is in that situation? I can’t recall ever seeing that happen before, where someone promotes their entire body, rather than just their arms?

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 3

At the end of the day, I don’t see Sims getting off tomorrow night anyway, in which case Klemmer being dropped will be a non-issue.

The thing that I’m a little unsure of is Gutherson being brought in as the 18th man for if Cleary pulls out.

I’ve been pushing all year for Gutho to be considered as the utility, but I liked the idea of a 4 forward bench in game 2, with a makeshift utility, rather than a genuine utility back. I thought that we lacked that extra bit of firepower off the bench in game 1, so a 4th forward gives us extra something.

Apart from last week’s game (which Graham did superbly in), how many times in the last 5 years have NSW actually needed a back on the bench?
The only other time I can think of is in Game 1 2017, when Bird went on for Pearce after failing a head knock.

Every other time, the utility was basically just brought on in the last 10 mins to try and chase points, and it never worked.

Personally, if Cleary pulls out, I would push Wighton to 5/8, bring Josh Morris back in to play right centre (which is his preferred side), and leave Graham on the bench as a 4th forward/makeshift utility.

David Klemmer snubbed as Freddy confirms unchanged Blues side for Origin 3

I think a combination of 1 & 3, with a bit of a tweak –

Only for SOO and Finals, but needs to be 5mins each way, Golden Try.

This will all sound a bit long winded, but bare with me. I’m sure that someone smarter than me can come up with a more succinct way of turning this into a rule –

I think that one of the problems with Golden Point is that referees are cautious to call any penalties, knowing that they can potentially decide the whole game with one contentious decision. So we need to try and keep the final result out of their hands as much as we can, so they don’t feel added pressure, and can ref overtime the same as they would any other part of the game.

So rather than adding pressure on the referees by expecting them to sin-bin players for anything that could be considered as a professional foul (although they should still definitely sin bin players for blatant professional fouls), I think that teams are allowed to go for penalty goals in the final 10 mins, and if after 10 mins of play and no try has been scored, if a team is ahead on penalty goals, they win.

That’ll stop players from giving away professional fouls in overtime, and refs can still happily call penalties that are there, without worrying that the whole game will potentially be over because of it.

Should we axe golden point?

I agree… I don’t see how or why Mannah is the one that’s been dropped. He’s not flashy at all, but since he was relegated to starting off of the bench last year, I reckon he’s been great. He seems to have a lot more energy about him, and the team seems to lift a gear when he comes on.

As much as it’s great watching Peni Terepo throw his all into every run, he rarely seems to actually bend or break through the defensive line, and doesn’t seem to actually impact the game very much. I don’t see why he consistently gets picked every week, and is often moved into the starting lineup on game day.

Just quickly, looking at their stats (admittedly Mannah has played one more game this year) – Mannah has almost twice as many tackle breaks and post contact metres than Terepo. He averages 99.1 running metres/game compared to 72.7m for Terepo (who hasn’t cracked 100m ever this year). And that’s from Mannah playing an average of about 5 minutes less per game than Terepo.

The only thing that Terepo has him beat on is the amount of tackles, but then Terepo’s tackle efficiency is lower.

NRL Round 12 teams: Arthur swings the axe, injuries slam the Panthers

You could make the argument that Gutho blowing up like that before the punishment was handed down may have made Perenara change his mind from a send off to a sin binning though?

Eels ask for NRL consistency over sin bin

Plus he fits in perfectly with Fittler’s “No d#ckheads” policy.

Safe to say, I’m an unabashed Gutho fan.

The NSW Blues contenders

I’m surprised that Gutherson isn’t in the conversation more often, as both a utility and as an outside back. His form has been great this year (he’s coming 3rd in the Dally M), and up until he did his knee at the back end of the 2017, he was one of the form players of the comp, and had been mentioned a few times as a potential Origin bolter.

He obviously didn’t have a great season last year, but I think a lot of that can be put down to him just coming back from an ACL, as well as his whole team playing poorly.

He definitely offers good utility value off of the bench, being able to cover 1-6, but I also love him running out of dummy half when the opposition forwards starts to tire. He does it all the time for Parra, makes great metres, and often puts teammates through holes off the back of it (he’s 14th for dummy half runs in the league, 1st for line break assists, and 4th for try assists).

I don’t think he’d let anyone down if he got picked as a starting winger either, or even at centre seeing as our options are getting a bit thin for specialist centres. He’s tall and solid, safe under the highball, and he’s 1st in the comp for average run meters.

And with Moylan and Turbo injured, and Dugan having a lot of niggling injuries of late, Gutho seems like he’d have to be the next candidate for fullback if Tedesco gets injured between now and game 1?

The NSW Blues contenders

As you said earlier, I think Conca is the one who makes way for Blakely at this stage.
I wouldn’t say that Conca’s been playing badly overall, but he has been prone to some bad errors this year (eg – The kick to Oscar Allen at the end of the 3rd).

I have to admit that I don’t think that Brayshaw has been quite playing to his potential this season. He seems like he’s a little rushed and unsure of himself at times with the ball.
I doubt that he’d actually be dropped, but maybe a drop down to Peel for a week or 2 to make way for Blakely might be good for him to get his mojo back?

Nat Fyfe and David Mundy are thriving for the suddenly relevant Dockers

Yeah, it’s definitely a huge difference between playing halves in lower grades vs Origin, but I’d feel a bit more comfortable knowing that whoever the utility is, he’s got at least some experience in playing in the backs if injury strikes.

That’s my only concern at picking Radley as the utility – The advantage is that if you don’t get any injuries, you can just use him purely as an extra forward off the bench at any stage of the game, rather than having a utility sitting on the bench for the first 70mins of the game, because there is no ideal time to inject them into the game. But the disadvantage is that if a back goes down injured early in the game, you’re stuck with a stop-gap measure for most of the game, and Qld would spend the rest of the game trying to exploit that.
Picking Gutho would mean he could play anywhere from 1-6 if need be, and as I said earlier, he’s great at burning teams from dummy half at the back end of halves if they brought him on for short bursts.

I guess at the end of the day, they both have their own risks/rewards, so it’d just comes down to the style Fittler wants the team to try and play to see who’d be the better fit.

Obviously Peachy is kind of the happy medium between the 2, although I hear that he’s not in great form at the moment (I haven’t watched much of the Titans so far this year)?

Eight talking points from NRL Round 6

Nice JM reference. Parra’s definitely going to have to show him the money now.

Moses tears up Tigers to christen Bankwest

I’m surprised that there’s been virtually no talk at all this year about Gutherson being an option for Origin. Even on this article, no one’s acknowledged point 8 at all in the comments.
Like yourself, I’d probably lean more towards him as the utility option for NSW (although Radley would have to be the front runner at this stage). I think he’s great at picking apart teams out of dummy half when they start to tire. But with Turbo most likely out for Game 1 though, I’d be happy for Gutho to be considered for the wing.
Up until he did his ACL in the latter half of 2017, he was one of the best players in the comp for the season, and although he had a quiet season last year (I think partially just because of the way the team as a whole was playing), he’s pretty much back to his 2017 form.

On a side note though – Does Radley offer anything for the NSW backline if there are any injuries to 1-7 during the game? I’m assuming he could play in the centres or even 5/8 at a pinch, but has he got any experience playing in the NRL or the NYC in the backline at all?

Eight talking points from NRL Round 6

I’ve got no problem with people having passion and even a bit of bias. But I do find it frustrating when the same comments get put up after every Freo article (see my above predicted comments list), and those comments are always a belief rather than a opinion.

Opinions can be changed. Beliefs can’t.

2019 AFL Season Preview: Fremantle Dockers

“Now it’s time for the easiest part of any CEO’s job… the cuts. Although I wasn’t able to cut everyone I wanted to, I have cut a lot of you.”

After 30 years of abject failure, Eels launch proactive review

Fair enough.
There are reports that Freo are offering him around $700k/season, which seems pretty high for someone who is a borderline afl talent that Freo doesn’t need, and seems to be more interested in coming to Freo than Freo is in getting him to come here?

AFL Trade Wrap Day 2: Will Setterfield, Rory Lobb, Tom Lynch and more

Can Fremantle finally land Hogan?

So I’ve got to ask, Don – now that Lobb has nominated Freo as his preferred club – if we pick him up, will you still consider him as a ‘border line AFL talent’, on par with Matera and Kersten, who is unneeded at Freo? Or will you be changing your tune, and spruiking him during the preseason as a fantastic pick up for the club, and a great player who is coming into his prime, and will play a major part in Freo’s push for a finals berth next year?
