As a Sydney sider who attended in person the Sydney AFL GF, the SANFL League GF and the AFL GF (family members playing in the first 2 and pies supporter for the 3rd), it is a very different experience in Melbourne that should be maintained. Agree it’s harder for interstate teams if they don’t play regularly at the mcg and that should be addressed. Certainly my fly in and out in a day wouldn’t be happening if it was a twilight game …and finally fireworks in the day are really lame but that’s no reason to move to the night.????
AFL Grand Final day is much more than just the game - why change something so important to our sporting culture?
Creating a dynasty is difficult but you need some “ go to players” who know their stuff with their eyes closed. Look at the Chicago bulls in their hey day though trying find an equivalent to Michal Jordan is difficult. You need a slice of luck and you need to keep moving forward and trying new things- trying out new old plans (eg Howe in the forward line) shakes things up a bit and followed by some cold hard decisions (dropping Noble) .
The pies lost the prelim the year before by a point to the swannies who then got smacked in the GF. Another one that given a bounce this way or that could have been a GF appearance or even more.
When you consider in 2022 everyone thought the pies fluked getting so far with the close wins, many didn’t think 2023 was their year.
Unfortunately though many may put them as favourites for next year which may not be a good sign – why ? Well how many Melbourne cup favourites end up winning?
