Would love to hear thoughts of a scrum guru – i have an unschooled impression that for all his around the field menace Coleman’s generates much less power and stabilises his front row less than either Simmons or Arnold.
I think the bulk of the turnaround in scrum dominance probably goes to Moody’s clever use of angles (Wallas will say illegal, AB’s will say skilfull but the results are the results). I think the change in the WB locks was a reasonably big influence in helping Moody’s effectiveness though.

The age-old problem at the heart of another lacklustre Wallabies performance

who’s your 6 then, Nick?

um. 67 tests and 13 tons? i do kinda get your point though…. i think.

Australia's unlucky XI from the 2000s golden era

Poor old Al Baxter springs to mind. Loved his intensity and effort but just got slaughtered during the years when we ignored the scrum.

I’m pretty worried about the speed of the AB’s – think they have nailed their selections this week.

Was initially going to agree with this comment but then reflected that he was able to put warrenball on the shelf and mix it up last year. that shows to me a willingness to change and learn.

Which Kiwi will RA choose to lead the Wallabies?

ANZAC banter aside, I think Dean’s experience would put off a lot of high calibre coaches.

You wouldn’t typically don’t join a company where you know all the variables are probably going to set you up for failure – e.g. internal politics, lack of resources, hostile supplier and customer relationships.

That’s a pretty tough gig for anybody to come into and I’m pretty sure if I was Gatland Cotter etc I wouldn’t touch it.

10 Beale
12 Kerevi
13 Kurindrani
11/14 Folau and Sefa

Michael Cheika needs Christian Lealiifano at 10 or 12

“The WBs have been within a whisker of two very good wins”

We are starting to sound like Wales….

Wallabies have re-established some pride, but now it's time to win

Pains me to agree but yes. I used to keep a pair of rolled up socks for throwing at the telly when Phipps passed badly but it looked like working with Mr Byrne was having a massive impact for the better on his game.

While watching the last couple of games I thought Genia’s game was horrible. On reflection, i think i think he was left horribly exposed by his pack (ok, that’s mainly the Scotland game) and it’s incredibly difficult to execute 9/10 skills when on the back foot. Interesting seeing the Italians get a lot of basic skills right with two forwards creating a shield for the box kick. We rarely provided a shield at all so most of his kicks were unprotected and therefore more likely to be screwed up.

What the Wallabies can get out of Super Rugby

Hats off to Scotland. I was at the QF and far from thinking Scotland were robbed I thought they were incredibly lucky to get within a mile of us. All of the Scottish points seemed to come from charge downs/intercepts or brain snaps and nothing constructed.

Saturday completely changed my mind. The charge down and intercept both came off the back of fantastic defensive intensity and passion that both rattled the wallabies and created the circumstances for the two Genia-TPN/Genia brain snaps. if the forwards are getting murdered, it’s up to the 9/10 axis to operate effectively under pressure. I recognise that this is incredibly hard to do but Genia and Foley failed on the weekend.

l actually see our reduced penalty count as a sign of softness in the pack rather than improved discipline. The Scots picked up a lot of penalties but working at the intensity of Pocock/Fardy at their best is always a high risk high reward game and our improved discipline indicated that we’ve abandoned that to an extent. Hooper is a great breakdown specialist but he needs an enforcer working with him to be effective.

Finally, great to see a lot NH teams not just relying on the loosies for breakdown passion and i hope this is something we can learn from.

Ultimately, I think having Pocock in the team has been papering over the cracks of a 4th to 8th world ranking calibre team. It’s kinda felt over the last 5 years that we’ve been hanging onto that 2/3 ranking by our fingernails. THere’s nothing in our playing pool, game plan, or inherent sporting intelligence that gives us a divine right to being in the top 1-3. Until we develop a proper plan for how we want to do it then we deserve to keep dropping down the ranks…

The woeful Wallabies and their rubbish rugby

This is more my ignorance than a whinge but I didn’t understand the ruling on one of the drives by a wallaby (cant remember who or when) in the second half. He had two Irish defenders trying to choke tackle but the wallaby, supported by a couple of forwards, drove the tacklers back about 15 metres before taking the carrier to ground. Turnover Ireland.

what was the thinking behind that? i thought you only got the turnover if you kill the momentum or is there something i’m missing?

seemed a littunfair given the WB momentum and then compounded less than 60 seconds later when pocock was squatting over a tackled player with hands on the ball for what felt like 5 seconds but no penalty.

overall awesome job by a depleted Ireland though. didnt think we were too bad but really frustrated by the lack of composure with low percentage hollywood offloads. box kicking away possession with no chasers and 3 minutes on the clock? seriously??

The Wallabies were beaten by a gutsy Ireland, not by the referee

latest forecast 10 degrees and sunny per BBC website. I’m living in the UK and its normally pretty accurate.

Genia back, Mumm on the bench as Wallabies name team to play Scotland

Looking forward to this.

Scots looking for revenge for last year and always play well against us.

I was at the QF and thought we should have put them away by 30 but for a couple of moments of madness. Would love a statement performance from the W’s.

Aussie coach plotting the downfall of the Wallabies

No, but Genia is being gracious and a diplomat. Class.

Cheika tossing up possible Wallabies team changes for Wales

Sigh, if only…. that just makes too much sense.

Highly likely we’ll have our eggs handed to us anyway, but at least we wouldnt have been nobbled before running on the pitch.

Michael Cheika keeps fans, All Blacks guessing about Wallabies team

One of my most intimidating memories of the Boks was seeing various combinations of Thor, Bismarck, Louw, Alberts squatting in front of a ruck. Thinking ‘jeez, i wouldn’t want to go anywhere near that’.

Holloway and Hooper squatting over the ball and you are licking your lips for a counter-ruck. There’s a reasonable possibility that this is our 7 and 8 in 2017 so we really need someone of Timani’s mass to stop us getting rolled over in the rucks.

European rugby makes moves set to end Giteau's Law

Carlos good arguments and interesting to get an Argentine perspective on the high tackles. I totally agree that there have been games over the last 12 months (stretching back to Kepu in the RWC final) where the WB’s have gone out to make a physical statement and it’s just rubbish to watch.

I really didn’t get that feeling from Saturday though, watching it live at Twickers if felt not so much dirty as desperation and being unable to cope with the speed and lateral movement from your guys. Late, slow, desperate yes but too me it didn’t have the vibe of a deliberate plan of attempted intimidation.

Absolutely no issue with the YCs and my guys need to tighten up on discipline (if you are too slow and late don’t stick out an arm)

The Wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies fans, don’t worry, be happy

I don’t agree with MC’s favourite 23 or the positions he has them playing but he’s the ultimate decision maker. I do think he needs to give the guys a number of tests to develop combinations so should stick with this 23 for the Autumn internationals.

The weekly chopping and changing of the locks must be driving the guys crazy. There have been enough games to give the main combinations 3 or 4 tests together but changing weekly means that while everyone has had a chance nobody has been able to settle into a rhythm.

Time for Michael Cheika to stick with his top 23

Yeah, had the feeling he was carrying the flag for Sanchez….

Crowd was comfortably 48k. Lower two (of three) tiers were chokkers and it took a full 20 minutes to get the brace of half time guinesses. Tickets were £20-£85 so even with the hammering sterling has taken over the last couple of months it should have been a decent earner for the Argentinian federation.

For a “neutral” game atmosphere was pretty good. Crowd probably 20% argentinian, 30% aussie and 50% english backing Argentina so on balance an argentinian home game, but without the lasers!

Live impressions:

– Aus scrum decent throughout
– High tackles caused by nimbleness of the Argenitnians. Had a sense of desperation and being unable to cope with the speed of the footwork rather than being malicious. No complaints about the cards.
– Defensive lineout pretty disappointing given the size discrepancy of the locks. Speed of getting up in the air really ordinary.
– Seemed to be a few holes that Cooper could have run into himself. Argentinian defence was fanning out waiting for him to pass.
– Kerevi’s power was pretty awesome to watch live.

The Wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies fans, don’t worry, be happy

Had good seats at Twickers and the Phipps incident happened right front of me. The medic gave the impression that he shepherding around the ball and at the time i was thinking WTF?? So i do understand Phipps frustration.

However, Phipps brainsnap is not excused and he absolutely deserved to be penalised.

In the context of this year though the Wallabies have been nailed for retaliating on a number of occassions this year and had the penalty reversed. In my opinion the penalty against Phipps should have been reversed for the Argentinian lining him up from 30 metres in retaliation to Phipps taking him out. Would that have been just and fair? No, even handed with the way we’ve been reffed this year? yes.

Anyway, felt a bit like the scotland quarter final in reverse (apart from the result). Argentina all over us everywhere except the scoreboard.

The Wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies fans, don’t worry, be happy

yep, if:

– AB’s have an off day through complacency, new combinations or injury
– Ball bounces our way (tbh i think a couple of wonky ball bounces were a small factor in june). Genia try was an example of ball sitting up nicely whereas we had similar moments in june and the ball bounced sideways to the poms.
– We get the vast majority of key decisions our wayfrom the ref
– All the wallabies play above themselves

then range of outcomes is probably something like AB’s +10 to WB’s +3. AB’s would still feel like they should win even if all of the above is stacked against them, but we would be in with a shout. any of those conditions not present and it’s AB’s by 20+

between june and august i wouldnt have even entertained the thought but there’s a little bit of menace in the WB’s game now.

The way forward for the Wallabies: Win at Eden Park

Bless you sir.

This is a thoroughly awesome site (I almost had tears of pride in our sport and its followers reading Harry Jones’ history a couple of weeks back) but the Aussie/Kiwi Reds/Tahs “banter” is anything but.
