Five things we learnt: Why Cheika could be the man to resurrect Tahs, Thor is the new Quade, value of sevens

I’ll never give up on Taniela and fans are foolish too. Unfit, yes. But there’s a reason teams like Leinster would want to sign him, he’s can be the best in the world at the most important position in rugby. You put a forward pack on the field in a test match with Nela and Skelton and you’re a chance of beating anyone.

100% I’ve lost a lot of respect for Turinui’s opinions post EJ saga and I find Hoiles equally as Bondi brained. I think they (Tahs) should fully embrace a remodelling with Friend + Horne & Nucifora orchestrating.

100% Neville is so underrated. Love to see a Canham Neville second row with Uru, Mcreight Valentini back row

'It was brutal': Clutch Lolesio kicks Brumbies to 'Test match intensity' win over Reds as Wright shines again

Will Uru ever get a Wallabies gig? I’d love to see him play 6 or 8 consistently.

Likewise the Waratahs players aren’t as good as they’ve been billed to be. Outside Bell, no one is a first choice Wallaby. I actually think the on-field performances have been fine, could have 2x wins if Edmed was clutch.

'Something's not working': Tahs' Good Friday turns into a nightmare as Rebels recruit Daugunu seals upset win

It’s a fair point to make but I also think harsh on the coaches when the Australian talent is more likely the real issue.
Scott Robertson and Clayton McMillan both only coached at NPC level prior to super rugby.
Leon Macdonald only two years as an assistant prior to coaching the Blues.
I don’t know the intricacies of the coaching development in NZ or AUS but I’m guessing they’re much better supported in NZ than AUS.
I do find it interesting that we often want coaches and players to go to Europe “get better” then come back to Aus. NZ doesn’t seem to have the same issues being good despite not having widespread European exposure. Guess they already have a lot of IP.
Anyway, maybe we should be trying to send more coaches/players to NPC if our don’t gain enough from Shute shield/Bris prem

Set up to fail: The gaping hole in Aussie Super Rugby coaching CVs - with one clear exception

Wilson not perfect. But surely no one outside Valentini is a better option at 8.

Toole stunner sees Brumbies snap 10-year drought in Dunedin as flyer's Test stocks rise

Haha harsh but fair, I’ve always found the “Lonergan for wallabies 9” a bit strange

Anyone specifically you’re referring to?

Good stats PK. My lingering issue with Frost (who I think is a real talent) was highlighted by that Billy Harmon try. Tends to be lacking in the contact area both attacking and defending. I do like Neville not sure why he always seems to pass the eye test for me looks strong in carry and tackle but yeah not as athletically gifted as Frost.

100% I think just keep going with what they’ve got. Suli somehow makes line breaks while jogging and somewhere in Petaia is that guy who played against Ireland in 2022 gotta play him (but maybe not 15). Both frustrating and magnificent at times

'Over the moon': Reds deny Chiefs for 23 PHASES to win 'titanic' trans-Tasman clash as Kiss' revolution continues

Can’t believe how many of these comments are focused on Finau and O’Keefe. Was an awesome game with some really impressive performances from largely unheralded reds players. Just great to watch as a reds fan

I agree with this, he’s too talented and physically gifted not to have on the field but doesn’t seem to be disciplined enough to play 15. The potential of him as a 15 is mouthwatering but you hold your breath anytime a kick goes down to him as literally anything could happen. Had he been kept as a winger he could have made the eventual transition into 13 (a-la Reiko Ioane) but he seems destined to be yet another, 14.5 utility back (Wright, Kellaway). Have to think he eventually takes Vunivalu’s position as he looks pretty ordinary so far. Mcdermott, Lynagh, Grealy, Paisami, Flook, Petaia, Campbell is a pretty tidy backline if a little small.

Super Rugby teams: Reds trio ruled out after brutal clash, Barrett ban revealed, Wallabies back for Tahs

I’ll never write off the ‘Saders but looking at Penney’s track record in super rugby and the mass exodus of top tier players, I wouldn’t blame fans for being a little sceptical. Personally, I think David Havili is a little overrated as a 12 and I’m surprised he hasn’t taken over as the 10 in the absence of Reihana. Unbelievably skilful player, great boot and awesome rugby brain I just think he needs a dynamic running threat inside him (aka – Mo’ounga/Barrett/MacKenzie) to be effective as he doesn’t have the physical tools to overcome a defence, as a result he offers very little as a ball carrying threat either as a power carrier or a pacey, dynamic carrier. In the same way Lolesio benefitted early on from having Simone (Brumbies) and Kerevi (Wallabies) outside him as a bail out option I think Kemara would benefit from Aumua at 12 while he develops.

The Crusaders dynasty looks dead - so how will it impact the All Blacks?

I agree that’s his best position just saying if that’s the #20 role the wallabies want then I think he’s actually looked decent enough to fill it with the others Harry mentioned.

Jed, Ned and Tane Edmed: The direction Joe Schmidt should head to put Eddie era to bed

Personally I would have gone with Hazem El Masri

Exclusive: Schmidt set to bring 'Lord' back to the Wallabies as first key appointment

Nice piece Harry.
Jed’s ability to disrupt the lineout is second to none in Aus rugby which makes Eddie’s decision not to pair him (at 6) with a non-jumping Will Skelton even more perplexing.

I’ve never been a fan of Hannigan at test level but he’s certainly shown enough to warrant another shot at it and seems like a legend of a bloke.
Salakaia-Loto (who I have been a long term sceptic of) actually looked pretty good also as as a potential impact body in the lock-6 role also.

Excited by Noah, Tane and even Lynagh.

Unrelated but I’ve been presently surprised by Schmidt’s wit and personality during media. Id much rather have a pint with him than EJ (who I reckon dodges shouts).

Tupou is definitely worth more than Cleary. Tightheads win tests not expensive fly half’s. Ask Finn Russell

Decision time: Clubs queuing up to pounce on Rebels' best as Rugby Australia given warning over in demand Wallabies

Injuries have hampered his performance but he’s a top 5 tighthead in the world. Easily worth this. A French team will happily pay this in euros for him.

Thats one of the issues highlighted by someone above that the best Aussie players don’t seem to respond very well to FIFO mentality of NZ coaches. Easy to blame Deans but could anyone else have done a better job of managing Beale, O’Connor, Quade et al. Quade by his own admission was a mess in those days, Beale evidently is a moron, O’Connor has turned it around recently but by al accounts wasn’t easy to deal with. The next coach (Ewen Mackenzie) left for issues with the playing group, Harsh to put it all on Deans.

'We'll sack him and be in the same position': Ex-Wallaby condemns Larkham snub as Schmidt deal CONFIRMED

Unfortunately, most of those loud voices that have zero idea work for this page/australian rugby media. I wonder if they’ll be a little more measured in their opinions following the catastrophe of Jones and the chorus of celebration that surrounded his appointment.

and Wallabies Vs Jones 😁

Nobody Goes For Pints with Joe: 'Cult-like figure' with an 'exhausting' style who might just restore pride to a rabble

Nice Harry – always insightful.
Might be irrational optimism talking here but sems like this could be a perfect combo.
If the Australians are open to being coached you can see all that sleeping talent coming together nicely. I’m just hoping to see more than 4 phases of rugby before (i) a pointless kick (ii) a penalty for not releasing (iii) a handling error forced from aimless lateral passing
Bring on rugby!

Nobody Goes For Pints with Joe: 'Cult-like figure' with an 'exhausting' style who might just restore pride to a rabble

Ironically.
Eddie “The Greatest Showman” Jones plays boring rugby and “Sleepy” Joe Schmidt plays some of the most expansive, entertaining rugby there is.
I dunno about the reference to US politics, they share the same name but Joe Schmidt is hardly Joe Biden 😂

COMMENT: In trading Greatest Showman for 'boring' and 'pragmatic' Sleepy Joe, RA gambling with game's future
