Being at the game it was clear that it was all about the gain line battle. The SB’s line speed was hard to break and any space that was created by the Wallabies was nullified by poor passing accuracy allowing the defense to regroup quickly. Tactically, I thought we needed our game managers to disrupt that line speed with short chips (a la what Quade Cooper did last year vs Boks). At the end of the day we were always chasing the game and hard to have a clear head when trying to close the points gap. In terms of grafting it out, I’m not sure we would have won that battle either as the SB’s were in no mood to lose a physical contest.

Killed by their extremes: Why the Wallabies have to find the graft and grind

Wallabies really lacking genuine playmaking at the moment. Nick White will need to shoulder a
lot of this to cover for the 10 and 15’s we have. Hopefully our gain line runners can create enough space to run our plays.

Wallabies CONFIRMED: Rennie makes SIX starting team changes for Boks battle, opts for 6-2 bench split

JOC has had a Barry of an international season so far. Interestingly the clips indicate Wright’s enthusiasm for directing and organising. I acknowledge he didn’t have a great game at FB but at least he provides glimpses of his ball playing skills.

ANALYSIS: 'Asking too much' - brutal truth behind James O'Connor's axing, and why Wallabies defence coach had to go

Agree, JOC looks contact shy at the moment. I recall Cooper espousing the benefits of a carnivore diet for improvement in his physicality.

Left field but I think that Wright @10 is a fantastic suggestion to consider for the future. He played 10 at Joeys, was a 5/8 in League for Manly and understands how to ball play at the line. Smart footballer!

ANALYSIS: Quade will turn to Sonny Bill on the long road back, McReight proves Rennie right, Hodge's defining moment

Great analysis again Nick. The naive soundbites that Australian coaches and players keep giving the media seems to backfire a lot.

The empire strikes back! How the north made history in round two

Unfortunately sufficient size and power is a base requirement in test rugby and Jock will likely get rag dolled. A player like Seru Uru for example, has all the skills but is looked upon by the coaches as not being physical enough.

REACTION: Perese and Petaia join Wallabies' devastating injury list as Eddie's England level series

Nick, typically, the scrums (Wallabies vs England) looked like a lottery. Do you have any clarity on what is going on there ie is Bell hinging/Tupou boring in

Get your questions in for Coach's Corner after a hectic few days of rugby

I share the same opinion RahRah. You need a cool head at the back, all round skills + low mistake rate. Kellaway has this and also makes good running yards in contact with his strong hips. He has a nose for the tryline but knows when to pass also.

ANALYSIS: Kellaway, Kerevi, Koroibete and Cadeyrn - four big ticks in Wallabies' triumph

Agree, you have to adjust tactics vs the opposition relative strengths/weaknesses (something we failed to do in 2016 the last time they were here).

WALLABIES TEAM: JOC, Tate left OUT of 23 in Rennie's Reds purge, Neville and Porecki to debut as Brumbies dominate

Agree. Gordon’s core skills (passing/ruck clearance) is better than Tate’s which is vital at International level where the defence closes in faster. Against tiring defences, Tate might be a better pick but vs England, the game will be frenetic for the full 80 I imagine.

This is one of the most difficult of sporting organisations to be chairman of in Australia and he came in probably at its lowest point. He definitely does deserve credit for many interim achievements considering the circumstances. The hate towards him or the denial of these achievements seem to be due to his recent comments about SRP. If you look at the Wallabies and the Aussie teams you can see an upward progression. There are many responsible for these but the chairman and CEO have to provide the right environment for it to happen.

Life of Hamish: We should recognise what McLennan has done for Australian rugby

I’ve been thinking recently how important Nick White is as a player to the Brumbies but even more so for the Wallabies. His superior game management will be crucial in the WC and he offers something no other halfback in Australia can do – go in and maul for the ball when there’s no piggies on hand to help. His intensity on the pitch makes him an instant pest to opposition players. I really rate him and noticed that when he started to control play from 9 on the spring tour, the WB’s attack improved. Really happy he is staying put.

ANALYSIS: Why Lord Laurie is still king of the contact zone

He is quite a unique player, possessing both athletic and game playing traits. His main work on seems to be consistency.

ANALYSIS: Why Lord Laurie is still king of the contact zone

Ben Darwin’s theory of cohesion for success springs to mind here.

ANALYSIS: Why Lord Laurie is still king of the contact zone

Nice of you to say Mad K but 1 decent game in 3 on the tour is still concerning. The Wallabies in many ways regressed and as you point out, a lot of that is due to indiscipline, impatience and not trusting the game plan. Overall my glass remains 2/5 full.

Why it's not all doom and gloom for the Wallabies

Thank you Nick. After the England match, the Wallaby tunnel was looking as bleak as a Northern Hemisphere winter but this analysis has somewhat revived my dormant faith in the gold jersey. One notable difference in this game was the step up in Nick White’s playmaking instead of leaving it up to the 10. My insinuation is that without either White or Cooper in the team to direct proceedings, the Wallaby phase play will likely unravel as quickly as what we saw against Scotland or England.

Why it's not all doom and gloom for the Wallabies

Incredibly headless performance by the Wallabies. For some reason, the players look distracted playing away from home and not focusing on their core skills, game plan and what they are trying to achieve for each play. Calm heads missing. Unfortunately JOC has been shown to be out of his league as a 10, Tom Wright is too emotional (tends to go for unnecessary niggle), Bell (distracted today with that silly over the top tip tackle), Faainga lacking focus (on crucial line outs), Beale is consistently inconsistent (pushing passes). On the flip side I liked the locks and back row performance today. England should have won by more today. Wallabies deserve to be rated back to 7 or 8 in the world based on that game.

'Our fans deserve better': Everything Dave Rennie said after 'dumb' Wallabies 'strangled' by England

Of course it isn’t – I’m talking about what it feels like as a fan responding to what is happening.

That’s where the Wallabies without Kerevi and QC have a maturity deficit.

Not sure which is worse, feeling like you are losing the game for both reasons (ref and playing badly) or just because of the ref.

You aren't imagining it... proof the Wallabies were hard done by

Agree, either put up or shut up.

You aren't imagining it... proof the Wallabies were hard done by

Spot on. I remember an interview with Kerevi this year where he stated stated both he and QC were trying to bring a level of calm to the team. Historically, the worst Wallaby traits have been this desire to score off every play.
The Wallabies need to instil that kind of culture where they trust their patterns and game plan.
