Given that Portia Woodman was sidelined for the rest of the game why should there be any concession for the accidental component of the tackle?
It was clearly poor technique but at that level of the sport we should expect better.
The case for a new type of rugby penalty
I always thought the NH autumn tours were to give the full squad of players and a few rookies the chance to be exposed to test rugby and match their skills against , in many cases, unknown opponents.
After watching most of the Italy game it was apparent that the team’s collective brain switched off when they ran on to the park. I am sure Dave Rennie and his fellow coaches did not tell their squad to go out and kick aimlessly, give a way stupid penalties, miss tackles and generally play dumb rugby.
There is clearly something wrong in the way the progression of talented young players move from grass roots rugby thru to the professional ranks is managed. Why are RA relying on the likes of Quade Cooper , Bernard Foley Curtley Beale and others to put a competitive team on the park at the expense of blooding new players. RWC 2023 forget it and start to rebuild a side for 2027.
