I couldnt agree with you more. Weirdly I have a big 11 year old son (whos taller than me). Who is at the top end of the range. 1.65m and 64kgs. But he doesnt have explosive power, even though hes very strong. I would hesitate putting him up against u12’s. Having said that, I really dont enjoy him going head to head with “little guys” either. But hes never “run through” a team, even though he probably could if he had that temperament.

But I do think having weight and age linked categories of some kind would help South African rugby. As far as I know, in order for your kid to play in a higher age group, you have to get written permission from the parents, the club as well as the Union. You cant just choose to play in a higher age group. In fact, we have to submit the player sheets at each match with ID numbers and if requested birth certificates to avoid mismatching. Some boys in u11 are BIG.

Size for age: Is it fair to have an 11-year-old playing in an older league?

I do think 8 bench players is overkill. Whilst I love our BombSquad, I think we could have achieved our victory with the same tight 5 throughout the match. So how about allowing a bench of 8, but you can only substitute 4 during the match. Its still tactical but also practical

Remember the reason for 8 subs, is the requirement that we have a full front row in reserve. And surely the reason for subs, is in case of injury. With 8 on the bench Rassie took full advantage. I think everyone will start doing that from now on.

I like to see what happens to big 120kg forwards after 70 minutes.

Don't go changing rugby union's laws

Squidge Rugby has an amazing analysis of the Wales SA match. It changed my perspective of the match completely.

Have you watched this analysis. Really brings some depth to the match. https://vimeo.com/371138564

Collective failure of the Six Nations

If I remember the stats correctly, there are over one hundred professional South African rugby players in the European leagues. Added to this there will be players from NZ, pacific islands, Argentina and Oz. these guys are taking up spaces from French/Welsh/Irish and English players, who may never get an opportunity playing behind these guys. Meanwhile, between our 4 “Super Franchises” and now Pro 14, South Africa should have at minimum 6 Springbok level players, for each position. Excluding the international guys. Young exciting talent, needs opportunities to play and show their talent. If you look at NZ, SA and Oz their domestic competition is strong and undiluted. Argentina the least successful of the 4 has the weakest domestic comp. Most of their international players play in Europe.
