Let’s get one thing straight, England didn’t win the World Cup, they were awarded it.

Was the English World Cup win the best thing for Australian cricket?

The Gabba cricket wicket is very dear to me.

So significant the AFL itself reduced it to a glorified warm-up game.

You bet, cricket also.

It is not a significant event. It might have been if played in Melbourne.

The AFL are a political organisation first and foremost. There are many identifiable tactics being used here:

1. Not playing at the Gabba is actually ideal for them, as it allows them to avoid the embarrassing spectacle of an empty stadium for their final.

2. They can lay the blame squarely at an enemy that they can direct anger towards – Stadiums Queensland – and use this issue to push for further concessions in the future. There is a long held desire for drop in pitches at the Gabba. THAT is their long term goal.

3. They can create the illusion of huge interest in the region, while being relieved of the burden of having to prove this.

I heartily congratulate the curators at the Gabba for having the fortitude to stand up to them. Queenslanders, and indeed Australians more broadly do not wish to have a fine cricket ground ruined by the greedy desires of a regional football code.

Has anyone ever proven the link between betting company sponsorship and match fixing? Or is it same vague notion propagated by people who hate the game, like Peter Fitzsimons.

Sam Perrett says gambling is a problem for the NRL

The AFL also tried to make a deal to get drug cheats off. Who cares what they do?

NRL have no problem with Norman on phone

No less than a public apology to Kenny-Dowall and the NRL from the NSW Premier is appropriate.

But no one cares what you think, least of all Hayne. That was my point, which in your own self indulgence, you missed.

Hayne is quite clearly a religious man, as are many people of islander heritage.

What significance does your ‘scepticism’ have regarding anything?

He seems to be copping some criticism for that, as if it is a play for wider acceptance in the American community.

But Hayne is on record for how his experience with the Fiji national team during the 08 World Cup enforced his faith. This is not a new thing for him.

All discussion on The Roar, even by far better RL writers than Prichard, has ignored the crucial point about why news ltd. is so upset.

That is that news ltd were hopeful of securing a Fox/Ten partnership. Non-news ltd sources have confirmed that they were heavily involved in negotiations with upwards of 30 meetings taking place. It appears they lowballed the NRL and rightly they were rejected and the NRL took a far better deal from Nine.

This whole tantrum has not been about subscription TV, but about the free to air coverage. I suspect that news ltd. wanted to use Rugby League as the foundation of turning Ten into their right wing free to air platform.

Now news ltd are clearly lying and making up stories about what occurred. They lie, and then lie about the lying, and then lie some more.

Anyone giving them an ounce of credence over this matter is severely discredited, including the writer of this article.

It's time for a Panadol after the NRL media circus

The NRL aren’t baiting or goading at all.

Merely trying to leverage the best possible value for their television properties. It is news ltd who are baiting and goading with comments like ‘we have always preferred AFL’.

Prichard, as usual is way off the mark with his fence-sitting, passively giving validity to the news ltd whinging.

David Smith is personally going to end the Super League war once and for all with the next portion of the rights deal. Whether that means leaving news ltd and its allies behind then so be it.

AFL crowds certainly “know better” when it comes to racially abusing their players.

Seriously, the arrogance of Ozzie rules fans is eye watering. The Elsom article was a startling example of this and tasteless in the extreme.

Value for money: Karmichael Hunt leaves a nasty legacy at the Suns

You are like a dog with a bone aren’t you Smith?

You can make all the points you like about playing attacking football without your best players. But the simple fact remains that Paul Green had no time to prepare for anything. Morgan and Lui were taken from the side half a week out from the game. You can bang on about attacking football, but Kostjasyn and Thompson have almost no ability to carry that out.

Green was left in the most difficult of circumstances, and was absolutely correct in putting up the ramparts and holding the fort on this one. I am not sure why one game has offended your sensibilities so much. NQ have provided the Rugby League world with some of the best attack over the last decade and what do we have to show for it? Certainly not a premiership. Sometimes circumstances call for a change of tactics and the likes of you cannot argue otherwise because it does not satisfy your Saturday night TV habits.

One thing the Manly game actually proved, is that even with our best players in the side, the attack is far from at its best. The Cowboys are somewhat clunky in the opposition twenty and Thurston is not at his normal brilliant self at present. We as fans though are certain that things will click into gear as the season wears on.

It is possible that Cameron King will at some point join the first grade side and he will add another dimension to the attack. So I think our club will be just fine as far as producing attractive football.

Look, I am footy fan also and enjoy seeing expansive and entertaining play. We are in agreement on this. But using this game and game plan from Paul Green on this one highly unusual occasion is not the example to be proving your point. Take up your arguments with the rules committee about reducing interchange and removing ridiculous rules like the seven tackle rule, or even clubs like the Roosters or Storm who produce some of the most cynical and negative football the game has seen.

SMITHY: You don't need superstar halves to play attacking footy

Let’s talk Granville then. He is currently in his first year as a starting hooker and has been used during the first and last third of each game to great effect.

For this game though he was to be replaced for the middle portion by a player who hasn’t played first grade for over a year. Again a change that Green was forced to make four days out from the game. There was a possibility Granville was to play eighty minutes, something that would have taken a toll on his ability. As it was he played more minutes than normal anyway.

Perhaps you need to be reminded that it was him who put the rubber in for the winning play. So I was satisfied with his contribution and he came up with the goods when it counts.

You are up struggle street with this argument. Cowboys fans are laughing and tough titties to the Saturday night couch potatoes who sit there saying (in the immortal words of Cobain) “he we are now, entertain us”.

SMITHY: Tigers and Cowboys and the modern reluctance to attack

Give it up. At no point did I say NQ should be playing this style of football for the remainder of the season. The game plan was warranted to get the job done this time so we bank the two points. Come the end of the season they will prove valuable.

One would almost think you are deliberately missing this point.

North Queensland currently have one of the best attacking records in the 2015 premiership, so I don’t think they need to take any lessons in attack from you. Green has developed Morgan into one of the best young halves in the game and has been handsomely rewarded with Origin selection.

SMITHY: Tigers and Cowboys and the modern reluctance to attack

For starters, Green was forced to select players who aren’t halves I.e Thompson and Kostjasyn, so all your advice on “how to play footy for halves” is quite useless for Paul Green. Is your plan implementable in the space of three days? Because that is how much time Green had to work with.

As to the specific point about Thompson, any Cowboys supporter can tell you that he has stagnated for years and has not developed like we expected to. He was even shifted to hooker because of this where his defensive prowess can be utilised. And it is in defense that he specialises, so is it any wonder Green devises a game plan around his strength?

SMITHY: Tigers and Cowboys and the modern reluctance to attack

Absolute nonsense.

North Queensland had no less than their first three choice halves out, Lui and Morgan quite unexpectedly. Smith has offered no solutions as to what Paul Green could have done with the less than spectacular playmaking pair of Kostjasyn and Thompson.

The North Queensland club is not mandated to entertain neutral supporters. Green and other coaches live and die by their results and he was doing the best he could in difficult circumstances. The players, to their absolute credit adhered to the game plan and got a much needed victory away from home.

There are other factors at play. North Queensland needs to finish in the top two to give themselves the best chance of winning a premiership. Playing two home finals prior to a GF is their top priority. It is games like this that can bring that goal undone. Green should be lauded for doing what is necessary and it is a shame the media narrative is not affording NQ the ‘brave win against the odds’ narrative. Fortunately us supporters will honour the effort if no one else will.

I find it odd that Smith only seeks to criticise in this instance. As a former head coach you would think that he would have the insight to appreciate what Green faced going into this game.

SMITHY: Tigers and Cowboys and the modern reluctance to attack

Anytime any Rugby League writer adds a the rider ‘the AFL does it better’, the whole article has lost credibility.

As to the AFL as being some beau ideal of sport, they are riddled with their own problems of drug use, racism and supporter behaviour. Other sports would be wise not to follow their lead.

That is not the media narrative however. And it is narratives that are important in the eyes of the media, not reality.
