Absolutely right, Jimmy. Rugby.com has been serving the “rusted-on” fans like us very well, but I don’t think they saw themselves as being there to promote our game to the “masses”..

Australian rugby deserves more media coverage

Yes, TWAS, I understand that, and I read and watched everything that they produced, but my point is that they were “preaching to the choir” and that they were not getting stuff into the mainstream media to engage the general public, the NRL followers, the ABC, local radio (Brisbane 612 Grandstand is virtually exclusively devoted to NRL..). Until we can get those people interested, the attendances at games will continue to decline..

I agree with and support your views on the poor coverage of Rugby by the National broadcaster, but I believe that this is a two-way process. Writing or broadcasting about something you’re not interested in is very hard work, and journalists, like the rest of us will often take the easy route when their Editor wants copy for the next programme. Does Rugby Australia feed these journalists with ready-made articles or video material? Anybody in business or entertainment knows that when you want to attract customers you have to play the media game – feed them stories, hold press conferences, give them a few drinks if necessary, to get your message published or on air.
Does RA have a Press Officer being paid from the $20m budget for Corporate affairs?
If yes, then he or she has not been earning their salary for the past 5 years, and I hope they are among the culled HQ staff; if no, then that was downright corporate negligence.
I hope Hamish McDonald, with his media background, will recognise and address this huge deficiency in HQ as a matter of urgency.. Then we (and the general sporting public) may see a bit more about Rugby on our national broadcaster’s channel.

World Rugby needs to look urgently at introducing transfer fees to be paid by clubs which “steal” promising young players to compensate for the cost of their development by their home club. Just paying a big fee to the agent has turned the agents into parasites on the franchises which have good developmental pathways, such as the Reds..

The Wallabies should ban Hockings and Lucas for life

Anybody ever ask why the All Blacks can be behind at half – time, and then come out and win the second half and the game? In my opinion this is entirely due to the rugby smarts of the coach – in this case, Steve Hansen.
Remember the shots of Cheika jumping up and down, waving his fists, in the coach’s box, while Hansen, next door, sat impassively, analysing the attack strategy of the opposition and working out a counter attack strategy for the second half. In the dressing rooms, we saw Cheika ranting at the Wallabies while Hansen spoke calmly, giving his team instructions on how to change tactics and win the game, as they almost always did… Cheika actually admitted that he didn’t bother looking at previous games played by opposition teams – how stupid and ignorant is that, as understanding the enemy prior to battle, and changing tactics if required during battle are surely the most valuable assets of a good General…

Cheika's league tactics explain the Wallabies' fall from grace

Did anyone else notice how little comment appeared on ABC RN or Brisbane 612 regarding such a great QLD win ? On monday morning, in the Sports report, there was lots of coverage of AFL, NRL, etc., but not one word about Rugby. Who is dropping the ball? Does QRU send reports to ABC or other news media? Or is there no interest in Rugby in ABC ? It’s no wonder we don’t get big crowds when the games are only on pay TV and there are no reports on Local radio…
