“an English disease?
I witnessed a scalpel incident a couple of years ago at a club game in Sydney so I am afraid that this premeditated cheating is not just confined to England.
Hopefully the three year ban will send the right message to ALL.

Is cheating rife in rugby union?

Certainly, the player is guilty, but surly the instigator of a plan must be equally guilty.
What happens to a payer who refuses to follow the game plan?

It's bloody Hell for Harlequins as Williams is banned

As I understand it half of that fine is suspended so it’s not as big as it first appears.
But my opinion is that the judiciary has in fact put it’s self into a very stupid position.
Are we really meant to believe that Williams real wondered into a joke shop and purchased a blood capsule and then on a wime decides to play Dracula five minutes from full time.
I actually feel sorry for him, poor sod.
If it’s good enough for players to be carpeted for off field behavior, then it is also high time that coaches take responsibility for cynically manipulating the laws of the game. I call it cheating.

This is far from the first time that the Blood bin charade has been used.
I witnessed an incident first hand at a club game some years ago.
I was told the script a day before the game and sure enough, down went the player, on came the phyiso and off went the player for a breather.
The coach who orchestrated that has now moved on to greater things

I have met Eddie, quite recently and he came across as well organized and very personable.
I also know a player he recently coached. I asked him, “so what do you think of Eddie” “Hard, ever demanding but very supportive”, was the reply.
Yes, he has strong opinions and can never be accused of being a “yes man” and perhaps his sense of humour doesn’t translate into print that well.
Somehow reminds me of the little boy in the crowd he said “what cloths”
Long may he speak out, right or wrong.

Eddie Jones - quiet please

Sheek, I don’t believe that we would loose 30 to 40 players to the NH. Apart from the fact that there are not that number of places available the money in the most part is on par with what can be had here.
And allowing for the free movement of players (labour) would bring rugby into line with any other type of career.
The ARU decided to open up one of its top jobs to the international market, in line with every other corporation in Australia, but it feels the need to coral its cattle.
I think it’s more just a case of keeping everyone held by the short and curlys.

Australian rugby can better manage the player drain

Shannon, the cornerstone of your article seems to be that these players somehow owe us something.
“Should not our Test players be giving back to the nation they so proudly represent by contributing to the development of the provincial and domestic competitions and the next generation of players?”
No, they owe us nothing. It’s the administrators and coaches whose life span is much longer than a player, that may, if you believe in the Collective, owe something back to the game.

Michael, you right, Carter would put bums on seats same as Johnny would, but more paper, more cracks.
They spent 1.2 Mil on a couple of RL players. How much development at the junior level would that have harvested over time? One can only guess because it’s not going to happen.
I’ve watched Beale play a few games at school boy level. Brilliant player. It was almost criminal throwing him in at the deep end, poor bugger. That was done in part to put bums on seats. I just hope his psyche has not been irrevocable damaged.
Cheers.

Should the NSWRU attempt to get Carter?

Mark, I thought exactly the same thing, “this is a wind up”
This is just another indictment on those who are paid to search out talent, those who are paid to select into academies and those who are paid to coach.
Its time they all stopped looking for another quick fix to cover their lack of forward planning and ineffective foresight.

Should the NSWRU attempt to get Carter?

The ARU put all of it’s eggs in just two baskets a long long time ago, ignoring the very foundation that rugby has been built on; Club rugby. This club base has been overlooked, with administrators who would rather spend their time searching for the golden rivet for their own personal aggrandizement than on basic fundamentals which carry less personal glory.
The marketing of rugby in Oz has been IMO very poor, with too many lazy options. The efforts to change the game to what the add people think the general public want to watch has failed.

Enjoy top level Aussie rugby while it lasts

Craig, I believe the season is too short. Too short as someone else pointed out to radically change game plans and too short to test real player depth.
Defiantly home and away game should be included, and far too soon to completely blame the coach.

The Waratahs are a disgrace

Put the entire squad, including the coaching staff on a “no win no pay” structure.

Ten things the Waratahs will do to address their issues

The fact is that this squad is supposed to be the very best available in NSW..
Is it?
I reckon I could put a team together from club land that would give them a run for their money.
The identification of talent in this state is abysmal and that is were it all starts.

The Waratahs are a disgrace

I don’t necessarily blame Hicky for this outcome. He’s playing with cattle that others have selected..
If the Selectors for the NSW academy ever get round to picking players purely on merit and not on family connections we may just start to see real talent coming through. Until that happens expect more of the same.
