'We have to keep the essence of what rugby is about': All Black legend's worrying words of warning

At least I know COVID stuffed the Jags in the following season right when they were being so competitive in 2019. From what I could gather about the Sunwolves, South Africa pushed for them to be kicked out for the most part when the Bulls, Stormers, Sharks, and Lions were part of SR citing logistics reasons despite having no issues traveling to Australia and NZ.

And I thought the new laws were a problem, but anyways NPC was literally the holy grail of NZ rugby where All Blacks were also released to play in it like back in the day compared to now. On the other hand Australian resurgence is a good thing and long overdue but obviously more needs to be done for the sake of the game such as taking Super Round to the original strongholds in ACT, NSW, and QLD instead of Melbourne. RA may also want to think about the fanfare in addition to better advertising and marketing with affordable prices on merch, food, and tickets.
Getting Japan and Argentina involved again would be ideal like a “Champions Cup” between SR and L1 with even better news that the Jaguares are coming back in 2026 if not earlier. The US market too is an interesting venture if Kanaloa Hawaii was reconsidered due to similar principles as the Drua which unfortunately was shot down by NZRU preferring that they merge with Moana Pasifika currently struggling as a nomadic team.

I wouldn’t really care much about the Rebels-Reds but the other two games are very interesting to me with finals spots up for grabs.
Tahs likely to upend the Force while the Drua women will look to win in chilly Canberra against the hosts after a hard fought win at home last week over the ladies from Perth.
I still think Super W and Aupiki should combine for a proper trans-tasman women’s comp even if the four kiwi sides put on masterclass performances against the AU sides providing harsh lessons while they’re at it. It’s no wonder the Tahs ladies are so good going to NZ for warm-up matches which helped them win Super W for years before the Fijiana Drua came along and dethroned them.

Super Rugby Women’s Week Four teams: Top of the table clash in WA, Brumbies aim to lock up finals, Rebels and Reds play for season

Indeed, I thought they were alright under Coleman despite losing games they should’ve won so here’s an opportunity against the wild horseys if they can in this “Wallabies trials.”

Super Rugby teams round 7: Bell returns but Tahs hooker gone for season, Jack back for Brums, Rebels' Leota blow

Four games no problem with the byes coming in, my picks would be the Force, Drua, Chiefs, and Brumbies.

Anyways, the Drua looking for their first away win of the season would be very interesting especially against a Rebels outfit that’s been given a lifeline to exist for more seasons with the PE thing sorted out by a former Qantas official despite “final stages” of sealing the deal.

At least that PE thing should be motivation for the Rebels not to slip up right when they’re in contention for the playoffs like previous seasons.

In a way it does mean that the Rebels live for seasons to come as long as the PE thing includes arvo games which would be best sellers for a smaller stadium that can cater to bigger crowds compared to AAMI Park.

I’d be really surprised if RA doesn’t consider this initiative but still good news anyways.

PE backed consortium 'in final stages' to save Melbourne Rebels with $30m injection and link with A-League club

If the Rebels do make the quarterfinals this season which might be their last, it would literally put egg on the faces of Waughsy and Co for trying to pull the plug on them even though realistically a benefactor like Twiggs for the Force may just be a lifeline at the moment to keep the Melbourne side in the comp.

Almost a fickle issue here, but regardless the Maroons always had depth on top players compared to their neighbors.

That’s been the one issue between SL and NRL, they’re not always on the same page on HIA protocols when dealing with the offending player.

Says alot about the Tahs fall from grace ever since their 2014 heroics, does put into question on how the grassroots are going and the kind of rugby culture going on in Sydney with the fear of losing for instance.

'What the hell's going on': Ex-Wallabies question 'losing' culture, pathways at Waratahs

Fair assessment on Super Rugby from his point of view, Mike Cron has his work cut out for him on helping Joey fix the Wallabies from the grassroots upwards. Not surprising if he was with his nephew (if I’m not wrong) Simon at the Rebels either. And the Jaguares returning would really help alot for SR in 2026 if not earlier based on recent news.

Wallabies needing all the help they can get, as long as RA don’t do something silly again like previously.

On the hand, at least the Tahs aren’t facing the same predicament as the Rebels since they’re an RA favorite. ????

So what’s holding RA back from making a deal with Japan together with NZRU to form an Asia-Pacific “Champions Cup” comp?

The Japanese are keen to join the Rugby Championship itself in the long run and would do anything to get involved even if it means combining League One and SR together after both conclude their respective seasons. Players also won’t have to travel far for sabbaticals and opportunities as seen with All Blacks prospects and the logistics are favorable too as seen with the Cross Border Rugby preseason warmups. Even better with JRFU signing MOUs already with Australia and NZ.

Force well sponsored so they’re not folding, Rebels hanging by a thread on their time in SR about to be culled despite fighting for a spot in the top eight, and the Drua literally is benefitting Fiji in many ways unlike MP needing help on attendance issues and gate-takings when it comes to the two pasifika teams. Bright side is that the Jaguares are planning for a return in 2026 if not much earlier which would really help alot for Argentina Rugby like previously. Kanaloa Hawaii reconsidered is one way of involving the US market too if they’re keen on it without necessarily reaching the mainland itself.

Anyways it’s just my opinion on how RA can look for financial backing by considering Japan, Argentina, and the US for Super Rugby involvement.

'Curse the money all you want' but RA must work out what it wants from Super Rugby - otherwise the game is doomed

True, he’ll be quite busy with the Drua pack being a handful, especially that frontrow.
