Yeah, I was looking at the table and wondering how they have got into the top four. They seems to be in a much lower league then Sharks/Storm/Panthers/Chooks/Bronx, but they have been quietly garnering the points.

NRL Magic Round Talking Points: Cronulla does it again, surface holds up and hip drop lotto leaves some teams shorthanded

ACT politicians have decided that they would rather spend a motza on a completely unnecessary tram system – they like the “green powered public transport” vibe – that’s why there is no cash for a new stadium.

(Whether there is any actual justification for another stadium is quite a different question).

NRL Magic Round Talking Points: Cronulla does it again, surface holds up and hip drop lotto leaves some teams shorthanded

Anyone who bought a house near Badgery’s Creek in the last ten years has got no grounds for complaint.

That has been the preferred site for donkey’s years – only waiting for a bunch of “can’t make a decision, for fear of losing votes” politicians to screw up their courage and say “Yes”.

Agreed. “Guilty until proven innocent” smacks of the Soviet Union and other nasty dictatorships.

Crichton = Yes.
Lomax = No (Good kicker, but Flanagan plays him on the wing for a reason)

Five and a kick: Why the Blues should pick their team around Nicho Hynes - and why time might be up for Arthur

Agree on the performance aspect of the deal being completely reasonable.”

Well, unless you know exactly what the “performance aspect of the game” actually is, how can you say you are satisfied with it ?

APC negotiated a very poor deal. By all accounts, Channel 10 saw them coming, and played them for suckers. Like APC paying for its own broadcasting. Like dumping the matches onto 10BOLD (which not all TVs can receive). Tellus what the “performance” aspect is, and tell us why it is so reasonable, please.

Ikonomidis winner sends Victory into A-League grand final

Personally, I prefer a one-legged semi-final and definitely prefer a one-legged grand-final.
It’s hard for spectators – especially neutrals – to keep enthusiastic over multiple legs.

I suspect the awful broadcasting deal may have committed the League to at least trying two-legged matches, so what coaches, players and spectators think may be irrelevant.

It fundamentally changes who the technology is for, placing the emphasis on participants to use it rather than on officials to refer to it in their process.”

Mike, I am uneasy at your interpretation. Please cast your mind back to that game Casey Badger refereed a week or so back (the one for which she was criticised as “losing control”).

Several Roarers commented that her decisions often seemed to be “late”, as if the bunker guy was (literally) in her ear, coaching her on what decisions to make.

That is a genuine concern. Irrespective of what it was originally intended to do, the bunker seems to have vigorously engaged in mission-creep, and no-one at NRL Centre is pulling them back into line. Possibly they are encouraging the bunker participants to be even more intrusive.

I suggest that if the NRL wants to keep the bunker it needs to do two things:

– first, state explicitly what the bunker can or cannot involve itself in; and ask the clubs to agree to that scope of work.

– second, to broadcast (on some NRL channel) – in real-time – the audio feed of the interactions between the bunker and the ref.

That should go a good way to ensuring the guys in the bunker keep their noses out of all business that falls outside their official purview.

The NRL shouldn't follow the EPL and get rid of video refs - they should recognise that the Bunker is the Wizard of Oz

Brett, I guess “it just does add value” was meant to be “it just does NOT add value” :=)
On that basis, I’ll scream an emphatic “YES” to your request that it be limited to “calls that involve a line”
– plus the off-field doctor directing the ref to send a player off for an HIA
– plus responding to specific questions put to them by the ref
– plus notifying the ref of any health and safety issues they have seen

The NRL shouldn't follow the EPL and get rid of video refs - they should recognise that the Bunker is the Wizard of Oz

A week for a hip-drop – given the potential for long-term injury – seems an “unbalanced” penalty: the punishment does not fit the crime.

NRL Magic Round judiciary: Papa set for ban after hip drop, Rapana and Tapine charged

Joe – don’t worry about Nicho’s defence. He’s not selected to make 40 tackles per match for Cronulla. For NSW, there will also be guys who are paid to tackle anyone who isn’t wearing blue.

Maybe the NRL-Central bosses could drag their eyes away from Magic Round and think about the use of its Bunker – and the views of clubs and fans.

Eloquently put, sir !

We call for supporters who attend games to respect all players and their efforts on the field.” – Blake Solly.

No sir.

A player is entitled to be judged by his performance, not by his skin colour.

However, I don’t have to respect a player who is not concentrating, obviously not trying, plays dirty, or simply lacks the skills to be a decent player. Respect has to be earned.

I’m not making allusions to any specific individual.

If you want an illustration of the “players as property” merntality at work, see if you can find a copy of The Australian for 16-5-2024, and read the article “Money for nothing: Revisiting the Jack Bowes trade which changed trading forever

Actually, it did not seem to change the nature of trading – it just emphasised the need to do it properly rather than p***ing to salary cap up the wall.

Why a draft makes sense as NRL eyes off rapid expansion with nowhere near enough players to fill rosters

… and Sam Stonestreet also got a run on the wing a few weeks back.

Kayal Iro at the Sharks is off-contract at the end of this season.
If I were at the Roosters, I’d be ringing his phone off the wall !

They might also want to have a surreptitious cup of coffee with Kade Dykes who is signed for 2025, but is stuck behind Nicho, Trindall and now Daniel Atkinson. He’s too good to be playing in the reggies, and would be an obvious Luke Keary replacement.

The Fifita flip: What happens now for reeling Roosters and their unexpected $3.4 million bounty?

Max
From the Sharks you can add Daniel Atkinson, Tuku Hau Tapua and Kayal Iro

I’m dubious about using the AFL as any sort of template.
AFL is played only in Aus.
League is played professionally in competitions in Aus/NZ and UK/France
League players can switch to Union and vice-versa. I can’t recall any AFL player going to Union.
You will need to first map out the objectives of your draft.
Propose your model and explain how it will achieve those objectives
Then explain how it will cope with transfers to and from SL and Union
MAYBE You can make a first draft of it, and offer it to The Roar as an article (they are always after new talent), and have the Roarers critique it.
I for one would certainly like to see it.
PS Don’t forget that lots of clubs have small catchment areas and Penrith’s is huge. You can’t expect Penrith to develop lots of rookies and put them into a draft and have every other club pick the best ones !. You’ll have to recognise that problem exists and figure out _some_ form of compensation for the Panthers.

Tony – this could be a goldmine !
– Current players you love to hate
– Retired players – ditto (Start with Gal for everyone north of the border)
– Officials and referees
– Dumb rules

At one article per week, I reckon you could spin this out to the end of the season

Mug lairs, thugs, grubs, nigglers and smug buggers - who are the players you really love to hate?

Maxtruk, that’s very true sir, but the cost of housing in Sydney is going to bring tears to his eyes and a hole to his wallet.

NRL Power Rankings: Round 10 - We have a new leader with Panthers hamstrung, Eels getting desperate, Storm lack oomph

If Brad Arthur has more sense than Old Man Cleary, he will give his most valuable player an extra few weeks R&R, rather than risk him breaking down again.

I am confident that as far as the Parramatta club and fans (and players) are concerned, they would all prefer to see Mitch Moses miss the entire SOO series and come back first week after Origin 3, fully fit and raring to go against all those guys who have been bust up in Origin.

Cleary's Origin fate sealed after Panthers confirm hamstring damage as Hynes adds to Blues' injury woes

The Newtown Jets may have failed as a first grade team, but they are now the Cronulla’s successful feeder club, and the Sharks will _spew_ if NRL-Central tries to rob them !

Perth don't want shotgun marriage with Bears or Jets as NRL ramps up rapid expansion plans

Yes – Iro getting penalised in the lead-up to the Elise Katoa try. I’ve watched that repeatedly on the replays and I can’t figure out what the was supposed to have done (or who he was supposed to have obstructed). From the look on his face, Iro had no idea either.

Baffling sin bin sends Storm spiralling as Sharks overcome Hynes' absence to silence critics ... somewhat
