As low as Swan was taken in the draft, Pendlebury has to be your number one draft hit. Absolute superstar of the comp. While Swan has a Brownlow to his name, he’s not in the same echelon as Pendlebury. Most teams have a Swan like player (an accumulator) but very few have a player like Pendlebury. He sits in the top 2 or 3 players in the comp.

The sweet and sour of the AFL drafts: Collingwood Magpies

“When they are on they are unstoppable. When they aren’t they are pretty average.” Did you just describe North Melbourne or Port Adelaide?

We have overrated Port Adelaide

I agree the game plan isn’t great, but even the greatest game plan counts for little if the players don’t put in the effort or have the will and desire to win. It has to start with Murphy and Gibbs, they are the leaders of the club. Gibbs is a shadow of the player we seen last year and Murphy’s not far behind. If they’re not showing the sheer desire to win and putting their body on the line, why would the rest of the team?
That said I think we will finally see a much needed response tonight, they have to! The addition of Simpson will help. I just don’t think it will be enough for Carlton to get over the line though.

Friday Night Forecast: Pick your margin

Macca, I think it will have more to do with Carlton than Geelong. Like I said I have a feeling Carlton will finally show some spirt and effort tonight, I just don’t think it will be for 4 quarters. Geelong running over the top late will have more to do with Carlton starting to fall away, rather than Geelong finishing the stronger (although I do think they will coincide with each other tonight).

Friday Night Forecast: Pick your margin

I think this is going to be a lot closer than many think, well for the first half at least. I think we will finally see a spirited Carlton performance, however, Geelong will be too strong in the end. Geelong to pull away in the last and win by 25.

Friday Night Forecast: Pick your margin

You can’t be serious? Let’s be honest Pluggers record will never be touched. I would love to see the day another forward kicked 100 goals in a season, let alone 1300+ for a career. Its one of those records that will stand the test of time, much like Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point game in the NBA. It’s a record to be marvelled, not chased down.

Which key forward would you rather: J. Riewoldt, Cameron or Hawkins?

Obviously historical data dating back to when North first started playing at Etihad won’t have a bearing on tonight’s game. I just thought it was interesting stat that they score over 100 points nearly 60% of the time they play there.

What does have more prevalence though is North’s more recent form at Etihad. Simply, they love the ground and always seem to put large scores on the board. Based on the above last 10 game averages, there’s no reason to think North won’t score 100+ points again tonight? And if they do, North will win. Essendon have only averaged 71 points per game this year. I just can’t see them scoring a big enough score to win this game. Their defence and midfield pressure will really need to stand up if they are to be any chance, as they simply won’t beat North in a shootout at Etihad.

Friday Night Forecast: Is a top-four spot on the line tonight?

North will win this one comfortably. I just can’t see how Essendon will outscore them at Etihad. North simply love this ground, incredibly they have scored over 100 points in 93 of their 158 games played there. Of their last 10 games at Etihad they have averaged 106 points scoring over the 100 on 7 occasions. If they score over 100 points again tonight, which I think they will, Essendon will have no chance.

Collingwood are terribly overrated. Their position on the ladder flatters them due to the draw (which by the way, I think has been great this year). They have only beat Brisbane (who have been hopeless this year), St Kilda (nothing to hang your hat on), Essendon (what on earth were they doing in the rain?) and Carlton (lol, nothing more needs to be said here). Their only challenges have come against Adelaide and Geelong and on both occasions they were comprehensively beaten. Richmond will beat them this week.

The Roar’s AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 7

I agree with your point on Essendon. Another issue they face is their lack firepower up forward. I do not think they are capable of kicking large enough scores to be a top four team. Last year they ranked 12th and this year they are sitting at 16th for total points. This would need to dramatically change for them to be challenging.
As with North, they have so much potential but for some reason only like to use it every couple of weeks. If they could play at their best every 3 out of 4 games they would be a lock for a top four spot. But we all know they seem incapable of doing this.

Which unheralded AFL teams can challenge the top four?

I’m not so convinced, we are only five rounds into the season. It way too early to be riding teams off. Look at Port last year, they were sitting at 10-1 and missed the top four.
Who out of these teams has the aptitude to challenge, well that’s anyone’s guess. They are all capable but also very inconsistent. However, I think if any can pull it off it will be North Melbourne.
