Great article – but what would the salary cap be if that team were at a club? That’s important because that’s why they are no longer at the Panthers. For context maybe you could compare the squad which sent the teams that were broken up/busted the salary cap to keep them together – say the 2010 Storm, or the 2002 Bulldogs, or the 1991 Raiders. Or even the 1994 Broncos and Raiders outfits that the Super League war was partially about.

How could they let them go? The team of Panthers discards who'd still challenge the NRL top four

Can’t agree with this article. I may be a mid50s Gen X guy, but I do remember DK heading our attack, particularly the early 80s post WSC. He was unstoppable and every batsman rated him. No less than Viv Richards said he was the best opponent in tests (I wouldn’t presume to say who he thought was the best he played against in First Class and in the nets). But Lillie topped the wicket taking in WSC super tests and set the record for most wickets in a year in 81. I have said that Cummins is our best fast bowler since Lillie. McGrath I really rate but he was never express and he had some handy support from Gillespie, Lee and of course Warnie. Of Lillie’s support acts of Thompson, Walker, Pascoe, Jenner, Mallet, Alderman, Lawson, Bright, I’d say only Thompson for a couple years and Alderman in 81 were anywhere as threatening.

Pat Cummins isn't Dennis Lillee's fast-bowling equal - he's actually much better

Great to hear from you DT. I would have thought you would also mention Ben Hunt’s try in game 3 of the 2022 SOO. Ok you don’t go for Wild and the maroons were already ahead, but it was some effort

As a fan actually at the game I don’t think we collectively played poorly but were sloppy at end of quarters and several players just didn’t play as well as needed ( (Rayner & Hipwood in particular). But geez you can’t be hard on them considering how they were in the whole game and in the second quarter had pushed nearly 3 goals ahead. It was one of the greatest grand finals ever, in the best season ever-and I’ve watched just about every gf since 1975

The Brisbane Lions 2023 season review: Advantage

You mentioned Steve Jackson, but really the key of that 89 GF was Chicka Ferguson beating 3 failed attempts to tackle him as he crossed with a minute to go. At the time it was reported that Sterlo said he had 3 paths to the line and took the hardest, which gave Mal the chance to kick the goal and take it into extra time.

Good question but my answer has always been wickets per test played. When I did it nearly 20 years ago the top 3 were SF Barnes (whom Richie Benaue had in his all time best test 11) at exactly 7 wickets per test, Murali at just over 6 wickets per test, Hadlee at 5.01 and DK Lillie at exactly 5.0. All other greats were largely in the 4-4.9 range, including Warne at 4.88. Just checked and the best modern player is Ashwin at 5.20.

Australia’s quartet of quality will soon be most prolific in Test history - but never the greatest

Harsh call on the Lions. They got everything they expected plus kept Gardiner and the unexpected arrival of Gunston. Agree midfield defence and collective defence on transition needs to improve. It was that that killed them In many games. But the in for the midfield Will really allow players like Berry and Lyons to be more lockdown roles and frighteningly give Neale more space. The big unknown then is where will Rayner and Bailey go? They haven’t convinced as full-time midfielders, but are somewhat wasted as half forwards only.
