We are going to get massacred in India if that is the team we are sending.

Peter Siddle in line for shock Test recall in latest Australian squad news

It’s actually pretty astounding that Ferguson and Hazlewood were expected to even bat, given that running between wickets would have exacerbated their injuries. The rules should be just that if a player is concussed or deemed unfit to play by an independent medic they are automatically replaced by the 12th man.

Cricket injury replacements are a reasonable concept, until you start thinking about it

Surely the replacement would have to be the 12th man, meaning that the 12th man would be a chosen all rounder, such that they could fit in if either a bowler or batsman gets injured. With an impartial medic and a pre-designated replacement there seems like very little way the system could be milked, while at the same time ensuring 11 vs 11.

It does seem to have become more pronounced nowadays the deterioration of the pitch, such that when two even teams (England and Australia) are playing, whoever bats second is playing for a draw not a win. The Ben Stokes win in the Ashes was a bit of an aberration because England had actually gone into the 4th innings on the third day, which made a fairly high chase much more achievable than if they had gone in on the 4th day.

Lyon gives Australia a massive edge over New Zealand

Lyon’s a bit of a funny spinner in that he seems to have suited his style more to the Australian conditions rather than the spin friendly dust-bowls of Asia. I don’t know of his exact record, but he has always seemed to have much better figures in Australia than when touring.

I think it is difficult to compare players across different era’s because the levels of fitness and professionalism were totally different, as well as The technology, the conditions they played under, and the opposition they played against. I suspect Bradman’s would not have been as dominant in the modern era. But what is remarkable about Bradman was that he was averaging double what any other batsman of the era was averaging. After Bradman just averaging 5-10 runs more than the second best batsman is an amazing achievement.

Could Steve Smith actually be the best after Bradman?

His average since 2014, when he stopped being a poor leg spinner, is about 75 or 76. Using the best 52 game streak seems a bit arbitrary, why not 50, 60 or 100. But it seems the fairest way to judge a batsman. Players picked early based on potential and those who played on too long (Ponting) don’t get penalized. And based on that there is a good case he is the second best batsman ever.

I agree. I can’t see Kurindrani in the 23, unless it was to put AAC at wing. Our wing stocks are pretty low at the moment, but I’d still rather AAC at 13 and either McCabe or Horne on the wing, with the other on the bench to cover 11-14. Beale also on the bench covering 11, 12 and 15, hopefully coming on with 20 to go at 12 recombining with Foley.

Pick The Roar's Wallabies XV and Reserves to play France

That said, the journalist is a bit of a c-word to have brought this before a judiciary.

SPIRO: Cheika has been SANZARed by a cameraman

Spiros, I respect that you, despite being a fellow journalist, are refraining from taking colleagues side and are instead calling him out. Cheika was probably a victim of aggressive journalism and had a fair right to get angry and be entitled to his privacy. But whether Cheika, you or I agree with it, how is “f… off” not foul or abusive language? If the f word isn’t considered foul and abusive, wouldn’t that make almost anything said not foul and unabusive?

Well I was half way there. Had the joker on the it

Highlanders outclass Super Rugby leaders

Booky, they probably had to rush him to the airport so he could play for Toulon in time 🙂

The problem with this model is that it means that any player hoping for a shot at the national teams is going to want to ensure they are playing for one of the two or three teams that are likely to the make the super championship. Otherwise they will be unable to
play against international opposition and are going to be significantly disadvantaged for national selections. Thus you are going to end up with those few teams dominating their comps.

Super Rugby future plans get wackier

The biggest problem with SA playing in Europe is not the time zone, it’s the season. The would have to play in the South African summer. I can’t see European teams wanting to keep alternating between freezing european winters and scorching African summers each week.
