Best article I have read on the tournament. Pretty well agree with everything that you have said especially on respect for the referees.
One point I would add about the different styles is that the all blacks and the springboks play many different styles at any given time which gives them the capacity to adapt when under pressure. I am not sure that England have many more gears than their plan A. If South Africa had got away to a 10 point lead would the slow accumulation of penalty goals be enough to drag back the deficit?

The World Cup Wrap: France 2023 got a final befitting the host nation - imperfect, baffling and historic

I promise Ill stop now but, the tunnel of torment

FLEM’S VERDICT: New-look Smith can rise above Ponting, Chappell, Waugh into clear second behind Bradman

what about the line of lament or the not quite apt line of lunacy

FLEM’S VERDICT: New-look Smith can rise above Ponting, Chappell, Waugh into clear second behind Bradman

To me Greg Chappell was such a majestic batsmen in his prime. I remember watching him bat at the SCG in 75-76 against WI and he was advancing down the wicket to a young Michael Holding and driving him down the ground. I cant believe the statistical difference between he and Smith is so large. But as we know the numbers don’t lie not over 88 tests.

Good one Tomothy beats the first ones that came into my head, ‘the hallway to hell’ or ‘ the victim’s verge’.

very hard to argue with the batting line up Tim or the rest of the team for that matter. One thing is certain; it is a team that would give any team they played a run for their money.
I forgot Larwood (something of a bad oversight) some of the footage of his bowling suggests that he would be a frightening prospect to face. Its worth noting that Tyson was regarded by Bill Lawry and Richie Benaud as as possibly the fastest bowler that has played the game.

England's greatest ever Test XI

Hi Tim
I’ve been enjoying your various all time selections and this one is no exception.
I’m not sure Jimmy Anderson would make my list as I think that for shear fire power I would prefer Iether Frank Tyson John Snow or Bob Willis

England's greatest ever Test XI

Great read Ronan really looking forward to this series

Veterans Taylor and Williamson remain NZ's heartbeat

Hi Rob agree with the PCS combo but Lyon must play

Australia should not fight Jofra Archer with fire

Thanks Ronan
Once again you have summed up very accurately what many of us were thinking.
A couple of thoughts to add to the mix.
First, how on earth do the selectors recover from here. They have dug themselves into a hole from where it will be almost impossible to pick our best batting lineup for the upcoming ashes. I know you have touched on this point in one of your other articles but it it is such a mess that it now seems possible Mathew Wade could be hopping on that plane to England as a batsman. We know what the result will be as soon as we have to play on a seaming deck.
Second what is the message being sent to all test aspirants playing in the shield. It doesn’t matter what you do, how many runs you make or wickets you take. If, however you come across as a great guy and hangout in the right group you are a good chance of being picked.
It is hard to imagine a more negative and deflating message being sent to all those blokes out there that are working their backsides off just to get a chance.

Labuschagne's Test selection is a farce
