Very impressed with St Kilda’s effort. The captain was absolutely inspirational again and the younger players, notably, Dunstan, Templeton, Saunders, Newnes, Curren and Hickey played really well. Having said that, I won’t get ahead of myself before the Giants game, I think GWS will most likely win even with St Kilda’s inclusions.

Riewoldt leads St Kilda to Round 1 win

I don’t understand why in the space of one preseason all of a sudden Melbourne is miles ahead of St Kilda in the public’s eye. No matter how good a coach Paul Roos it is still going to take a considerable effort for Melbourne to turn it around.

I think Melbourne will probably finish above St Kilda on the ladder, but I wouldn’t be sure of that. All of these people saying that the wooden spoon “winners” will only be St Kilda or GWS I wouldn’t speak so soon.

St Kilda won’t have added another wooden spoon?

Their average crowd at Skoda Stadium is 8,205. That doesn’t include any Sydney because they haven’t played them there. For a team that has only won 3 games in 2 years I’d say that’s not too bad. Once they become successful that figure may well double and be better than most NRL clubs.

AFL vs NRL: A rivalry up there with the best

Phill, what kind of world do you live in that you think Australian football is a cross between soccer and ballet??? I would hardly call it a cross between anything. Besides, many people who take a little time to understand the game do love it, but due to preconceived ideas so many people aren’t open to it.

We will see what happens in NZ in 10 or so years down the track when the public has become much more exposed to it. Not saying it will ever rival Rugby but it can certainly develop a niche.

Care to give an example of such a journalist?

Storm Boy, you really have no idea of what happens in Melbourne do you? When the Essendon drugs scandal was revealed the media down here came out with headlines to the effect of “Sport’s Darkest Day” etc. Negative press dominated the FRONT and BACK pages of the papers for most of the AFL season.

How can you say that the NRL has better commentators? Okay, Bruce McAvaney is annoying but the NSW NRL commentators are more biased against QLD and the Storm than any other commentators I’ve heard.

I also don’t think you can put West Coast in quite the same class as Hawthorn and Sydney. Top four contender, maybe. But I don’t think they’re really a chance at the flag.

West Coast are a title contender... on paper

Please learn to spell Riewoldt.
