Great article. Would love to see them become a powerhouse. So true regarding the eclectic mix of potential followers over there. I love watching the Fortescue Comp. Plenty of local support and a strong comp. RA really needs to look after the West. Vlandysville won’t be far off.

It’d be good to see a young bloke like Jonte Connolly get some experience. Big body, fast and skilful, plus he’s a Brothers man.

Strewth, bloke. Take it easy.

I don’t know of a more comprehensive and followed comp, except maybe the French top 14 as pointed out by atwb. Although I think NRL has others covered in tv and radio shows. Crowds would be similar. Gallagher premiership is decent too

Watched the LNR14 once upon a time here in Australia, but sadly haven’t seen it for ages. Ignore the NRL and Vlandys at your peril. They want to bury rugby in Australia. But, as long as you can stream your games from France, that’ll suffice I suppose.

Like it or not, the NRL is the most competitive domestic rugby competition in the world, either code. His defection should be a canary in the already contaminated coal mine for rugby in Australia and the Pacific islands. He will do well, and the Fijian kids will love him.

I don’t think Immortals are necessary in a sport that already recognises them pretty well. Creates God likeness and its UnAustralian. Some of these blokes have been less than memorable in their off field behaviour.

Six of the best: The standout options for the ultimate honour in the NRL Immortal debate

Cannot wait for the expansion and tier two competition

You can stick your uncompetitive EPL, Bundesliga and Serie A - this year's A-League is far more entertaining

All good points, but I reckon the author was saying that we know it’s not as glitzy or historic as the European comps, but the unpredictability is entertaining. I like that our comp has a final series. Adds to the notion of upsets.

Yeah, nothing to do with it. Once the area of leagues West panthers, the league presence has diminished other than cashed up Broncos players with most kids going to Marist Ashgrove or hopping the bus to Grammar or Terrace and equally same for girls schools. It’s rugby heartland with a very strongly followed club. Whilst it might be very Catholic, Martin probably means it’s very private/catholic school oriented and thus rugby strong. There’s not too many afl or league shirts seen out that way, and the Herbert family were fairly instrumental in drawing Marist kids away from their traditional clubs of Wests and Brothers to GPS who’d moved to Ashgrove from Newmarket. They’re well respected. His brother is known to be more personable, but the Herbert’s respect all rugby people, not just ex wallabies. I think Daniel gets the whole rugby scene and pines for entire rugby enhancements in Australia.
