Agree, especially these days when injury can strike at anytime.
Will be interesting to see which bolters put their hands up this year and how form/lack of form plays a part in team choices 🙂

Rugby News: ‘Bring fans closer to the stars’ - Six Nations to trial jersey change, Razor reveals timeline for All Black skipper announcement

Hi Highlander,
One thing that has puzzled me this year is, if Schmidt and Ryan are having such a say in the game plan, training, selection (?) why then does Akira keep getting picked?
Do they see something we don’t see?
Thanks for your articles this year, they have made not only for good reading but also provided good food for thought and debate .
Have a good Christmas.

After a tumultuous year, where did the All Blacks finally land in 2022?

Hey Highlander, have you read this from Mark Reason?
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/300745980/how-the-all-blacks-are-destroying-their-key-playmaker-richie-mounga
while I normally don’t agree with what he says he seems to make some interesting points.

ANALYSIS: The All Blacks' season summed up in one bizarre game

Haha, Neutral View, I bet you had fun writing the first line ????

All Blacks vs. Ireland: RTS named for debut, Havili to No.12, Scott Barrett back to flanker, Irish make one change

I did like the the way that they attacked the breakdown last week, they did not make it easy for the reds and made them work to get any sort of flow going. It felt like they were relishing in the contest rather than just playing to a plan.

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 14: tipping sucks again

You have to feel for them. I did read somewhere that Aaron Mauger was saying he would prefer the game to be scrapped and each team to be given 2 points.
Now that could have a major impact on the top eight but he indicated that player welfare should trump all.

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 11: It's a locked way to the top

G’day Brett,
Glad to hear that Moana Pasifika are digging their toes in and not just accepting a midweek reschedule. Hopefully they are given a bit of leeway based on after playing six games in three weeks already this season.

Super Rugby tipping panel Week 11: It's a locked way to the top

Interesting quote from Sam “We almost surprised ourselves how well we went with our pick-and-goes, considering it’s not traditionally how we play.
“So, maybe it’s about shortening up some of our attacking stuff to bring in defenders and find space elsewhere.”
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/300472503/sam-cane-says-all-blacks-have-identified-small-tweaks-to-make-big-differences
I wonder if Highlander helped him write this 😂
But instead of saying “it’s not traditionally how we play” he should have said “it is a simple effective play against rush defenses”

All Blacks captain Cane signs new rugby deal

Hi can you let me know which article it was that you covered this as I would be interested in reading more , not that i don’t read all your articles 🙂

'Still at All Blacks level': Israel Folau grabbed the headlines but 'lethal' teammate has Tonga dreaming

Yip he doesn’t seem to shirk from that work does it. Which I suppose opens a whole different discussion. i.e. The difference (positives and negatives) between a barnstorming 12 vs a more subtle 12.
Is the Nonu type 12 easier to defend against in terms of what their actions will be most of the time – try and run over the defender (maybe not easier to tackle 😛 )
Is a more subtle 12 harder to defend as their actions are not so predictable.
Interesting times ahead to see how Havili goes against a variety of opposition over the next few weeks/months. There is no doubting his ability nor his willingness to go hard no matter who he is facing that is for sure.

The ‘clunk’ of another All Black piece falling into place under coach Foster

Hi , Havili is an interesting one isn’t he, with him and ALB playing so well it seems to go against the whole model of “you must have a big line breaker at 12” ethos that seems to be the mantra for a lot of teams (and a lot of the discussions here on the Roar)

The ‘clunk’ of another All Black piece falling into place under coach Foster

Personally i don’t think you are in a minority at all. I also cant understand why you would want to have the enjoyment of watching an amazing game spoilt by only concentrating on the referee. as Max Lahiff so eloquently said “what is better than watching a macabre sport of gladiatorial confrontation” 😛

How Gatland outsmarted the Boks at their own game on their own turf

Excellent article Highlander, sometimes the best way to view how well things can be done are by comparing it to when it is done badly. E.g. The Blues halfbacks, watching Ruru come on to replace Christie is like watching chalk and cheese. Sadly his type of play doesn’t lend itself to the directives and to his other half (Christie). getting a balance like the highlanders have will be a big ask for a lot of teams I would think, but may allow some younger halfbacks with the skills more opportunities to move to SR teams than what they have had for a while.

The ruck directives have made halfback the most key role in the new rugby XV

Yip… this is my thoughts too, i do get the point JD is making above but they do just seem flat. Normally a flat patch for them is turned around quite quickly but it has a feel for it being for the whole TT.

Get your questions in for Issue 17 of Coach's Corner

Hi Nick
What do you attribute to the slide in performance of the Crusaders. For while they were looking almost unbeatable and now seem to have lost some of their ruthlessness.
I wondered if it was the impact of not having a specialist 7 and the loss of Moody and Goodhue starting to show, but then the loss of them has been for a while now, and the slide in performance has more been for the TT tournament – (not saying they aren’t playing well, it just seems to be a bit below their normal standards)

Get your questions in for Issue 17 of Coach's Corner

When watching players join a rolling maul, there seem to be a lot that do not enter correctly. This maybe if what he is meaning. Yet (perception only) it appears that the defending team tend to get pulled up more for being offside and this then just gives the attacking team another chance. Maybe one way to check the legality of the attacking teams try by having the TMO check any try scored via a rolling maul

Law variations on both sides of the ditch with a common goal in mind

I would like to see:
Policing of the halfbacks when putting the ball in the scrum, that it is in straight, this would help with making them more of a contest.
If a try is scored via a rolling mall, then it is checked by the TMO before being awarded, a consequence would be that time is taken to check, but the number of trys awarded when people are clearly not joining the maul correctly is crazy. Again the positive outcome (hopefully) would be to make it more of a contest.

Which laws of rugby union need changing?

for all players from all teams !
it isnt a good look for the game is it?

Pocock out: Wallabies hit by major injury blow ahead of Springboks Test

Hi Nick
One thing that was interesting on a rugby TC show was that David Pocock was playing beside Kurtley – the inference was that he was there to negate Ngani, and once the ABs had identified this they then ran at pocock to make him take the tackle an dthis left Ngani a free run at Kurtley, they showed a few instances of the difference before (Ngani being tackled) and after (Ngani running through Kurtley)

Will the Wallabies feel the need for speed after Eden Park?
