Thanks Allanthus. The pool of death becomes the dream pool if we can knock over Wales. Without demeaning our opponents, or getting ahead of things, Aus SHOULD make the semis. I really don’t know who I’d prefer to meet there out of Argies, France and Ireland, but I’d certainly prefer any of those to Boks or AB’s. I must say, I am really looking forward to watching those 2 belt the bejesus out of each other, I suspect softening rather than fine tuning the victor for the main show.

The World Cup Wrap: Mouth-watering finals begin to take shape

bennalong, the first error saw the ball hit the ground a metre in front of Giteau and the very next pass was to no-one in particular. Soon after he had the ball knocked from his hands when he had ample opportunity to clear it. I heard Kafe’s comment and thought it was ridiculous.

Wallabies beat England at Twickenham to seal quarter-final berth

If Samoa knock over Scotland, and Japan beat USA, I think Japan sneak through. Either way, winning the pool should mean dodging SA and AB’s until the final, which is clearly advantageous.

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over England

In still, dry conditions I agree totally. 95% of the time you are just handing over possession.

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over England

No, Foley correctly held to stay on the outside man – it was Beale’s tackle. In fact Foley did extraordinarily well to almost stop the try.

Yes, that’s how I saw it.

I don’t know how his mistakes get swept under the carpet. We’ve painted ourselves into a corner, so Genia starts, Phipps on the bench. Leave him there unless Genia gets injured.

You missed it? I’m not game to ask what was so important. I hope everything’s ok.

Daveski, I think you are being very forgiving of Phipps. 3 errors in his 1st 6 minutes is unacceptable. We have become desensitised because it is the norm rather than the exception. I love a lot of what he brings to the table but his basic halfback errors have me pulling my hair out.

Noddy was unquestionably a very good footballer but was more reliable than brilliant. Of course he started at inside centre throughout the grand-slam tour. Interestingly Gould was handed the goal kicking duties in the Wales test. His tactical kicking was good, his link play was good and his combination with Farr-Jones (I think 41 tests together) resulted in wonderful ball to an exciting backline. He was more in the Foley/Toomua style (but better) whereas Ella was more in the Quade style (but much, much, better). My memories are of him being virtually mistake free, an excellent link player, a superb goal kicker and snapping up that bad ball from Campo to knock off Ireland in 91.

Wallabies to edge out England, if they overcome their goal-kicking woes

Cheika has put “every single one of his favorites (sic) in the team”. Well he is the selector – isn’t the job of a selector to pick his best (ie favourites) in the side?

Wallabies vs England: Rugby World Cup preview, team lists and predictions

McCalman is a good workhorse and certainly would never let you down. McMahon however has a ruggedness to his game, in both defence and attack, that most of our pigs lack, and for that he gets my nod.

Cheika settles on best XV for England clash

No Quade on the bench gives it more a “consolidate a lead” look than a “pinch a win” look. Obviously a prop goes, presumably Smith, Beale will be there to offer some late spark if required, which means Mitchell goes. I expect a 5-3 bench and to my way of thinking McMahon is a must. Having lost Skelton I think Cheik will probably opt for Carter’s bulk meaning Mumm misses a spot.

Cheika settles on best XV for England clash

Whoa up boys – lets not get ahead of ourselves. Fortunately Cheik is running the show and not David. Only one game to concern ourselves with at the moment. Hopefully the player’s mindset is such that they neither know nor care who they meet in the post pool games should they qualify 1 or 2 in the pool. As is often the case taking things one step at a time will prove the formula for success.

Lack of bonus points could kill Wallabies' World Cup campaign

As long as we are not continually pinged in the scrums we should be ok, but, I’m sorry to say, I have no confidence in the referee.

Scrum key to Australia beating England: Jones

Thanks Brett, I appreciate your weekly previews.

National Rugby Championship: Round 7 preview

Thanks Greg – agree with a lot. Inside ball, quick re-cycle and those outside defenders are in offside trouble. Wales tried but were too slow on the re-cycle. Resorted effectively to the wide ball. Of course the chip or grubber remains an option. England attack was pedestrian and with better defensive communication that short side try would have been stopped. My main concern is keeping the Frenchman happy at scrum time.

The Wallabies' do or die battles against England

Etienne – no arguments there and the most exciting performance was Japan v SA, but IMO the best performance has been SA v Samoa.

Behind Enemy Lines: The knockout rounds begin in Newcastle

Boks effort against Samoa was the most impressive performance so far in the tournament. If they maintain that form then Scotland won’t present any problems.

Behind Enemy Lines: The knockout rounds begin in Newcastle

Correct me if I’m mistaken but I think it’s Poite reffing this game and Joubert Aus v Wales. I don’t like to be too critical of refs (it’s a thankless job that I wouldn’t want to do) but Poite can be hard to folliow, often wrong and very influential to the result. If he takes a dislike to our scrummaging, as he did with the Boks scrum v Argies, then we could be doomed. It’s one thing being overpowered but being pinged without knowing what for, makes it impossible to correct. He can take a set and thus he can bury a team. I sure hope he likes what our front row are doing come the weekend.
On the other hand I think being so familiar with Joubert is a plus for us in the Wales game.

SPIRO: Wallabies and England dive into pool of death mind games

Did Mitchell blow his chance? Perhaps. I too thought he had, but after that awful start he had a very good game and showed that he is still an attacking weapon – something that we are in short supply of. It would be very harsh on Horne but I’m inclined to give Mitchell the nod. Quade missed a golden opportunity – oh how I wish he’d knock over every kick. Interesting that we are saying Foley must play because of his goal kicking whereas if he was playing for England or Wales they would be saying he can’t be picked because of his goal kicking. Our number one side’s backline penetration is a major concern, particular with our poor goal kicking, which still keeps Quade in the equation.

Five talking points from the Wallabies' win over Uruguay

Monty Python’s Black knight – I love it. Wasn’t aware that de Villiers was out but I think that strengthens Boks chances, provided de Allende and Kriel remain injury free. They are SA’s most potent centre pairing. Make no mistake, SA are in this comp up to their necks (as opposed to Wales in this comp down to their necks as you suggested). When those big pigs get rumbling, as they did against Samoa, they are one heck of a powerhouse and they have backs that can score tries and a reliable goal kicker/drop kicker. As a matter of interest was Bismark merely rested or is he injured?
Congrats on the ton and look forward to many more.

The World Cup Wrap: Group of death comes alive but it’s too soon to be drawing conclusions

Right decision to kick for the lineout – wrong decision to throw to 2. Game showed how important goal kicking is. Wallabies likely to need to score 2 tries more than their opponent against both England and Wales to take the bickies.
Fiji surely will go back to their traditional game and could knock over the hugely depleted Welsh side on their quick backup.

England vs Wales highlights: Rugby World Cup scores, blog

Leon Spinks win, or rather that he went 15 rounds, caused our 3 man Flying Sharpie crew to miss the start of the 1st race in our new boat by an hour!
Also I’d find a spot for Steven Bradbury.

The biggest sporting upsets in my time

I have often been critical of Phipps but in the spirit of fairness I am compelled to say that I thought he went well when he came on. His service was crisp and his defence excellent. Deserving of better than 4.9.
