He didn’t. He said it a year and a half ago after they’d chased down 378 at Edgbaston. Misleading headline …

Gill finally catches a break as century sets England record target - and Stokes wishes it was more

If this case is successful, I bet there will be a similar case filed in Australia. If your old man played club rugby or higher for a few years or more, it sounds like he could be a fringe candidate.

The guys grabbing all the headlines are players from the early days of professionalism, but it doesn’t seem restricted to them.

Vickery and Henson join list of legends in major concussion lawsuit against World Rugby

There are players aged all the way up to 80 in the list. So there are guys from the amateur era in there.

If there is a claimant aged 80, that guy was playing (and not getting paid for it) in the 60s and 70s. You can guarantee that anyone with a slight concussion would just run it off back then. Knowledge about CTE was zero.

There isn’t a second “k”. I’m guessing the three missing letters are “n”, “o”, and “b”.

'Just a game, k---heads': Why world's top rugby ref has decided to give the game away

yep. “we dominated”. that’s kind of jaw dropping.

'Eddie got found out': Jones in spotlight as 'ferocious' Fiji leave Wallabies RWC hopes hanging by thread in 69 year first

Kind of, but I think that there’s a “bazball” approach to bowling and field setting that gets forgotten in all the hype of high run scoring rates. That “umbrella” field that was set in the first test was a new one for me.

It still won’t work (in the form that we just saw in the Ashes) in India. I might be wrong, but I doubt it. English batsmen, outside of one obvious exception, don’t play spin well enough.

Flem's Verdict: Stokes’ spirit of cricket goes out the window over catch while ICC needs to sort out ludicrous ball-swap farce

England won’t win in India with this style of cricket because, historically, England don’t win in India with any style of cricket. That goes for everyone else too. In 30 odd test series of 3 or more tests, going back to the mid 80s, India have lost twice – once to Australia and once to England. If “bazball” loses in India, it proves very little either way.

Flem's Verdict: Stokes’ spirit of cricket goes out the window over catch while ICC needs to sort out ludicrous ball-swap farce

Yeah, that’s kind of why I don’t believe the story. England had just won the match and avoided defeat in the series, the idea that they’d be sitting in their dressing room being “bitter” doesn’t wash. More likely that Stuart Broad actually did give a three hour goodbye speech about himself, and players from both sides met up later away from the ground. There’s a journalist somewhere, just trying to stir up a bit more ill feeling.

Needs to be the other way round to work the same way as the Simpson’s joke – so something like “not only a Yorkshireman but also English”. I wouldn’t put it past him him though. Very large, slow moving target you’ve picked there. 😂

The Australian cricket team could learn a lot from Piers Morgan about ethics, integrity and humility

“Is it really coming to a point where a bowler can’t celebrate a wicket? Must be a slow news day if you’re trying to make something out of that!” – Merv Hughes.

UK View: 'Hardly angelic' - Poms react to 'ironic indignation' after Uzzy abuse, Green hailed as 'finest' of all time

Yeah, it seems like Stokes has decided that a draw is of less value than an entertaining loss.

Root ton, reverse-ramps, first-ball mayhem and shock declaration - Aussies endure peak Bazball on thrilling opening day

I’m still scratching my head about it. He still had Root out there knocking 6s. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the declaration didn’t work so they’ve left runs out there. Makes for great spectacle though and that’s all Stokes seems to care about.

Yeah, a big guy.

Peter’s first paragraph –

The size difference between players in rugby union is what defines it from other winter codes, a game for all types. The most striking being the height separation between the halfback and lock forward. The imposing sight of a lock standing next to their halfback makes rugby the great game it is.

was right in front of me when I saw Roger and my dad shake hands. Roger’s somewhere around 6ft4. Dad is 5ft10, and was the first choice fly half at Gosforth for the best part of a decade. It’s great that the game can accommodate such widely differing athletes at the highest level.

Willie John McBride - a great man and true rugby legend

I think he moved around where his teaching job took him. Started at Fylde, where he grew up, moved to the north east for a teaching job, before going down south for another teaching job at Harrow school. How it was before professionalism.

I think Alan Black had something to do with it too, having made the move between Gosforth and Wasps himself.

I love that hotel story. My dad played for Gosforth (now Newcastle Falcons) in the 60s and 70s, the same club side as Roger Uttley. Roger told me and my brother that story when we were kids, 40 odd years ago. We loved all those old tour stories that my dad and his mates would tell, but that one always made me smile the most.

Mad Max 2 is better than the first one too.

Lacking punch, low on drama: Second season of The Test can't live up to the original

The water seems to have done some good to the players that survived it. They just broke the record for the quickest test team to reach 500. 😱

UPDATE: England-Pakistan Test to go ahead despite virus ripping through Poms camp

Nah, play to your strengths. They’re a better ODI side than a Test side. If they go slowly I reckon there’s more chance that they’ll collapse and lose.

England on the verge of another stunning win as BazBall Bairstow delivers again

It’s not 50 test innings, it’s 50 international innings across all formats.

Innings defeat at Headingley: Time for some changes in the Indian team

There’s definitely something wrong with Kohli right now. There have been times when he hasn’t walked after getting bowled. Today he started to walk after he hadn’t hit it.

Innings defeat at Headingley: Time for some changes in the Indian team

Fair enough. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and test cricket is very unpredictable. If I’d read the article before the collapse (and now the huge 1st innings lead), I wouldn’t have disagreed with any of it. Thanks for writing. 👍

India will need to call on the ghosts of the past to win at Headingley

I get that this was probably written before the start of the day, but it was published after the end of play.
I think that maybe a little rewrite was a good idea, given what has just happened.

India will need to call on the ghosts of the past to win at Headingley

That hour long whinge did the trick then. For me they were lucky that Kolbe and Faf didn’t get reds in the first half.

That said, it’s all set up nicely for the third instalment.

And we shouldn’t have a problem with that. He’s only trying to make refereeing better for everyone. 😂
